Vietnamese Culture Camp
By Kirk Savage When the Catalyst Foundation's 1st Annual Vietnam Culture Camp ended on Sunday September 9, 2001 my eight-year-old daughters Rose and Sara protested in their own quiet way. "Why is it only a weekend?" they complained. The whole experience had made them feel so special that they wanted to hold onto it for awhile longer. On Sunday we were all inspired by the presence of Betty Tisdale, who talked to us about her work supporting Anh Lhac orphanage during the Vietnam War and her airlifting of the children to the U.S. in the chaotic days before the government of South Vietnam fell. While her example of courage and commitment was far beyond anything I could boast of in my life, she still made me feel part of a larger mission to help disadvantaged children around the globe. As I write this now, contemplating the possibility of many more innocent children being orphaned in faraway places such as Afghanistan, I can only hope for more Betty Tisdales to spring up and come to their rescue. There are some divine beaches along the coast, while inland there are soaring mountains, some of which are cloaked by dense, misty forests. Vietnam also offers an opportunity to see a country of traditional charm and rare beauty rapidly opening up to the outside world.
When To Go
There are no good or bad seasons to visit Vietnam. When one region is wet, cold or steamy hot, there is always somewhere else that is sunny and pleasant. Basically, the south has two seasons: the wet (May to November, wettest from June to August) and the dry (December to April). The hottest and most humid time is from the end of February to May. The central coast is dry from May to October and wet from December to February. The highland areas are significantly cooler than the lowlands, and temperatures can get down to freezing in winter. The north has two seasons: cool, damp winters (November to April) and hot summers (May to October). There is the possibility of typhoons between July and November, affecting the north and central areas.

Four great philosophies and religions have shaped the spiritual life of the Vietnamese people: Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and Christianity. Over the centuries, Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism have melded with popular Chinese beliefs and ancient Vietnamese animism to form what is known as Tam Giao (or `Triple Religion'). The Vietnamese language (kinh) is a hybrid of Mon-Khmer, Tai and Chinese elements with many of its basic words derived from the monotonic Mon-Khmer languages. The most widely spoken foreign languages in Vietnam are Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), English, French and Russian, more or less in that order. Popular artistic forms include: traditional painting produced on frame-mounted silk; an eclectic array of theatre, puppetry, music and dance; religious sculpture; and lacquerware. Vietnamese Cuisine Vietnam is a long, skinny country stretching from Hanoi and the Red River in the north to Ho Chi Minh City and the fertile Mekong River Delta in the south. These ends are connected by a mountainous spine that runs along the South China Sea. On the west, Vietnam is bordered by Laos and Cambodia, and to the north, lies China. The food of the north, through stir-fries and noodle-based soups, shows the heavy influence of Chinese cooking. The mountainous middle section, with the former Imperial capitol, Hue, at its center, has an abundance of fresh produce.
