Brief description A small country which has loomed large on the world's stage, Vietnam is an ancient civilization of distinctive identity-both preserved and transformed as many cultures have clashed over its soil. Distinct among Southeast Asian countries, twenty-first-century Vietnam has preserved its ancient and colonial architecture and pristine coastline. Today, so much of the exotic and beautiful remains, yet so much is changing, new, and exciting as this friendly Asian society reinvents itself and its economy. Ho Chi Minh City's treasures include Independence Palace, history and war museums, Cathedral Notre Dame, Glac Lam pagoda and the Tay Son lacquerware factory. At Tay Ninh, near the Cambodian border, lies a holy temple of Cao Daism, blending elements of Christianity, Buddhism, Confucianism, Hinduism, Taoism and Islam. Other sites include the Viet Cong's underground tunnels and the Mekong River and tropical islands.

Description: A small country which has loomed large on the world's stage, Vietnam is an ancient civilization of distinctive identity-both preserved and transformed as many cultures have clashed over its soil. The Vietnam study program is a singular educational opportunity at a singular historical moment. No previous Vietnamese language study is required. Distinct among Southeast Asian countries, twenty-first-century Vietnam has preserved its ancient and colonial architecture and pristine coastline as neighboring nations have rushed headlong into polluting growth. Today, so much of the exotic and beautiful remains, yet so much is changing, new, and exciting as this friendly Asian society reinvents itself and its economy. Highlights: Students will both live history and study it: witnesses of a transformation in progress, scholars of a complex culture. FSU's affiliation with Vietnam National University in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) ensures exceptional courses in Vietnamese civilization and language. Another highlight is the Ho Chi Minh Conservatory of Music's collaboration in a study of Asian musical traditions. Excursions near and distant will bring classroom topics alive. Class schedules allow for field trips to the city's cultural treasures (Independence Palace, the history and military museums, Notre Dame Cathedral, Chinatown, and much more). Weekend guided trips to the Mekong Delta, the Cu Chi tunnel complex, the Cao Dai Temple at Tay Ninh, and other major sites open a panorama of natural and human wonders: river and farm life, mountains, sculpture, the musoleums of monarchs.

    Abstract
    From the Paper:

"The Long March was where the communists were able to finally establish a strong footing in China. They fought many heroic battles and showed great determination. They suffered considerable hardship and took many winding routes through the countryside (Allan, 2001), which allowed Mao to continue what he had done best before: continue to organize the peasants. Mao wanted a classless society, and this position was something that could only help the Chinese peasants, who had lived in virtual slavery under the warlords. This broadened his base of power and eventually allowed him to take the country over." Term Paper #46538 Add to Cart (You can always remove it later) Stereotyping the Asian-American Community
Looks at some of the factors at work that encourage stereotypes of the Asian-American community.

We need to understand what we will really be fighting for in Iraq
    by Jonathan Glancey
    And it's one, two, three
    What are we fighting for?
    Don't ask me, I don't give a damn -
    Next stop is Vietnam
Remember Vietnam? More than two million Vietnamese and 58,000 Americans died. Country Joe McDonald was a war veteran. He first sang the I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag in 1965: And it's five, six, seven
    Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
    Whoopee! We're all gonna die
It was innocent Vietnamese villagers, though, who died at My Lai on March 16 1968. Led by Lieutenant William Calley, "Charlie Company", a unit of the US Eleventh Light Infantry, massacred 500 unarmed villagers. My Lai was a turning point in the uncalled-for US invasion. How, Americans began to ask, could the US have God and "Charlie Company" on its side? In what ways was "Charlie Patrol", President Johnson and the US morally superior to the Vietcong, Ho Chi Minh and an ancient Far Eastern civilization? Even if it were worth fighting to keep communism and its weapons of mass destruction at bay by blasting civilians with napalm, what positive message was Uncle Sam preaching? "Men who take up arms against one another in public," said Abraham Lincoln - quoted in Lt Calley's trial - to Union troops during the US civil war, "do not cease on this account to be moral human beings, responsible to one another and to God."
