Ancient Indian Architecture
This is a granite temple panel - one of many that show the splendor of Indian temple architecture. The Science of Architecture and Civil Construction was known in Ancient India as Sthapatya-Shastra . The word Sthapatya is derived from the root word Sthapana i.e. 'to establish'. The technique of architecture was both a science and an art, hence it is also known as Sthapatya-kala, the word Kala means an art. From very early times the construction of temples, palaces, rest houses and other civil construction was undertaken by professional architects known as Sthapati. Even during the Vedic times, there existed professionals who specialized in the technique of constructing chariots and other heavy instruments of war. These professionals have been referred to in the Rig Veda as Rathakara which literally means 'chariot maker'. The excavations of the ruins at Mohenjodaro and Harrappa (today in Pakistan) proved the existence of a developed Urban civilization in India. The Indus valley civilization is dated around 3000 B.C. Thus since the last 5000 years. India has had an urban civilization. The existence of an urban civilization presumes the existence of well developed techniques of architecture and construction. These techniques would no doubt have had been systematically stated in record books for transmitting them to the later generations as well for being used as reference media for actual construction. Unfortunately, as far as the Indus Valley civilization goes no such records have been preserved either as rock edicts, manuscripts, etc., or in folk tales and legends.

Topics for Vietnamese-U.S. Research Cooperation: A Vietnamese Perspective
Tran Quoc Vuong, Chair, Department of Archaeology, National University of Hanoi
The Center for Intercultural Studies affiliated with the National University of Hanoi is at present undertaking a number of research projects on Vietnamese history, folklore, and archaeology and is interested in cooperating with American scholars conducting research in these areas. A Study of East-West Cultural Interaction The Center is undertaking a research project entitled "Vietnam: 100 Years of East-West Cultural Interaction," dealing with a period beginning at the end of the 19th century. The research examines the transformation and development of literature, music, the arts, theater, architecture, and the press in Vietnam from the colonial period to the present. Vietnam's Archaeology Vietnamese archaeologists are researching the three following ancient civilizations of present-day Vietnamese territory: 1) The Dai Viet civilization, which originated in the Red River Delta and expanded southward between the 10th and 19th centuries. Related research topics include the production and trading of ceramics, and maritime archeology (including the port visits of Chinese junks); 2) The Cham civilization, which flourished between the second and seventeenth centuries. A related topic of interest is the relationship between Champa and other southeast Asian polities; 3) The Mekong Delta civilization (also known as the Oc Eo or the Phu Nam civilization) and the Khmer civilization, which flourished between the second and third century and the seventh and eighth century. In this area, Vietnamese scholars have worked closely with Indian, Australian, Polish and Japanese scholars.

Stones in the Sky - Part I
Before the Journey to Angkor Wat
By
Willard Van De Bogart
S It has always been fascinating to me how my life began to shift to SE Asia from California in 1998. My interest in Buddhist Temples took me around the countryside of Thailand always appreciating and always seeking the mystery that created such beautiful architecture. But always in the back of my mind there lurked a curious fascination with the teachings of Gotama Buddha and the secrets that seemed to be incorporated into all the temples. But knowing that Angkor Wat was designed on a star system similar to the pyramids of Egypt got me very curious because now I felt a deeper reason which drew me to SE Asia in the first place. What was Angkor Wat? That became my number one question when I arrived in San Francisco, California. My stay was only for a few months before I would return to Thailand in late June, and in those few months I had expressed my new found insights and interests to several of my friends. To my absolute astonishment a close friend had saved a rare book written in 1926 titled "Four Faces of Siva" by Robert J. Casey. The book had originally belonged to Frank R. Girard of the Bohemian Club of San Francisco who had also penned his name on the inside page. The book was presented to me to read by Dan Donahue of Santa Rosa, CA. The book is a detective story of a vanished race; i.e. the Khmer Civilization. After a two-month stay in San Francisco I returned to Thailand, and the in-flight movie on my return, believe it or not, was a sequel to the first movie I saw where Graham Hancock was again mentioning Angkor Wat. This time the movie was mentioning the placement of Angkor Wat in Cambodia as being 72 degrees separated from the Giza pyramids on the surface of the earth.

The issues for high school are many, including: We have found a district that has been successful in bringing PBL into all of its schools. Davidson County School District in North Carolina has recently taken the initiative to implement PBL in 75 percent of its classrooms. We explored the issues district leaders faced and gave some ideas to other administrators hoping to implement systemwide PBL initiatives. Early Examples of High School PBL Projects
The course also touches on the use of relational databases to create interactive web sites and graphics handling and manipulation. The course is offered at the technology center, taking advantage of a fully-equipped lab. In this course, students have created web sites that investigate such far-ranging topics as the 17th century witch hunts in the United States, ancient world civilizations, and Roman architecture. Witch Trials describes the history of the witch hunts and even compares them to McCarthyism in the 1950s. It includes a crossword puzzle to test your understanding of the events the students describe on the site.
Later Projects
One particularly interesting and successful project was in a ninth-grade honors English class. Students read Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers, a novel that discusses the Vietnam War. The students then produced a digital video about Vietnam, the war, the characters, and the culture.
