Hardware Issues for Prototype Front End Modules
For the 6 prototype boards, we will buy APEX 20k400E for the front FPGAs. The earlier idea to buy some 20k600 for prototypes as well is now thought to be unnecessary, though the board design will still be able to house the 20k600. Adam agreed to order the FPGAs for the prototypes imminently through RAL. The list price is currently $941 per chip.
The logic to be housed in the back FPGA is minimal (2 ESBs for FIFOs?). The choice of chip is mainly determined by the pin count. A preliminary estimate is given below. Adam agreed to make a precise pin count (depends on exact board design, see below). Then the final choice will be made based on data sheet comparisons.

The real world aspects of the design process including design for testability for manufacturing will be discussed.Current articles from journals will also be assigned so students will get the opportunity to interpret state of the art developments in the field. Students will use VHDL and Verilog to model computer designs, download them to FPGA's and modify them for performance and testability analysis.The project will use the Xilinx tool suite and other industrial testbench products. The course has a mandatory laboratory component and an option for a final lab that can be counted as a senior project (EE97). Students design a "Virtual Student" using the Xilinx CAD tool suite.

Hi can anyone recommend books for beginner level programming of XS40 and XS95 boards for someone with zero knowledge of FPGA VHDL programming? These are required to teach both staff and students, so it should preferably be easy to follow.

You have several choices, none of which completely meet your needs:
  • The Practical Xilinx Designer Lab Book 1.5 is a complete tutorial that shows how to design logic using VHDL and/or schematics for the XS40 and XS95 Boards and Xilinx Foundation 1.5. Prentice Hall discontinued publication of this book last year. You might get a used copy from somebody. But the current Xilinx Student Edition software is based on Foundation 2.1i so the book is a bit out of date. If you get a copy, perhaps Prentice Hall will give you permission to copy the material for use in your class. XESS is releasing chapters of its Pragmatic Logic Design with Foundation 2.1i

    Overview of silicon CMOS technology and design of digital logic in CMOS. This overview is intended to provide the student with an understanding of the ability to convert general descriptions of digital logic functions into transistor level circuits in silicon CMOS technologies. The student will be expected to understand the following.
    • The conversion of truth table functions into the pull-up and pull-down parts of a CMOS realization of the function.
    • The general layout of power and ground on an integrated circuit and the implications of this layout on the physical layout of transistors between power and ground lines.

    HOPCO REVIEW We recently used this book to update a somewhat tarnished skill-set based on now ancient CUPL and ABEL Hardware Design Languages and some more recent experience with Xilinx and Altera MaxII+ synthesis tools. We found the book to be EXCELLENT! It's totally readable, covers a wide range of topics (though eventually one will want more in-depth treatment of some topics), and is a quick and relatively painless way of getting the basics of VHDL under your belt. The CDROM included with this book offers a demo version of Accolade's PeakVHDL/FPGA editor/simulator/synthesis tools (one of the authors is founder of Accolade!) and a few other program samplings. All in all, we'd recommend this book to anyone with some digital design and programming background who wants to get into the arena of VHDL programming.
