"The College of Veterinary Medicine produces not only well-trained veterinary clinicians and researchers but also generates new knowledge through research in many areas of veterinary biomedical sciences."
Click on photograph to view caption Veterinary medicine impacts almost every critical aspect of human life: the food we eat and the clothes we wear; our physical, emotional, and economic well-being; and the quality of our environment. Few people are aware of the enormous diversity of job opportunities that exist in veterinary medical sciences. In addition to the well-known private practice D.V.M., veterinary scientists serve in government, industry, and academia in a plethora of roles.
Primary Research Products
Institutions of higher learning produce two primary products. One of these products is the creation of new knowledge through research, and the second is graduates who put this knowledge to work in society to enhance personal development, the quality of life, and the operation and productivity of our businesses, government, and other institutions. The College of Veterinary Medicine produces not only well-trained veterinary clinicians and researchers but also generates new knowledge through research in many areas of veterinary biomedical sciences. Dean Joseph W. Alexander firmly believes that teaching and research are inseparable. A complete scholar not only teaches a modern, up-to-date course through library research and preparation but also conducts and directs active laboratory or clinical research. Research complements good teaching by stimulating the intellect and maintaining the inquisitive nature of the scholar. Research is an essential component of scholarship in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

for Canada Foundation for Innovation and Canada Research Chairs Adapted from the Strategic Research Plan
Approved by the Senate of the University, 21 June 2000, and Updated June 2001 I. Goals and Objectives:
UPEI’s research strategy pursues the following broad goals: the support of research, individually and in teams, across the full spectrum of academic disciplines; the enhancement of teaching and learning by an environment rich in research and creativity; the development of a dynamic culture of research, creativity, and innovation across the University. As the province’s only university, UPEI must be a key site for and play a leadership role in knowledge-based development. To help achieve these goals, UPEI will seek to deploy Canada Research Chairs and Canada Foundation for Innovation grants to promote the development of teams of researchers comprising scholars from more than one academic unit or discipline. These teams will be encouraged in areas of existing or emerging research strength and excellence. Supported areas of research will have a demonstrable impact - in terms of benefits and reputation - for Prince Edward Island, the Atlantic Region, and Canada. Canada Research Chairs will be catalysts and leaders for these constellations of researchers and Canada Foundation for Innovation grants will help provide the tools need for high-level collaborative research. II. Support for Research and Research Training:

Graduate Institute of Veterinary Pathology Objective Faculty Curriculum Equipment and Library ... nchu ivp home Objective The main curriculum of the Graduate Institute of Veterinary Pathology is designed with the aim to educate students to study in the field of animal diseases. Based upon the pathology and modern fields of immunopathology, molecular pathology as well as molecular biology, graduate students can further understand the pathogenesis of diseases and improve their diagnosis techniques for the purposes of disease control, prevention and public health. In addition, our principle is also training veterinary student to become veterinary pathologists and improving their research activity. The following category summarize the goals of the Institute: To improve veterinarians in diseases diagnosis To study on the important epidemic disease pathogens, with emphasis on the field of immunology and molecular pathology To use animal models to study diseases among humans and animals, with emphasis on comparative pathology, immunopathology and oncology To study on the diseases of aquatic animals To study on wild animal diseases To improve services for clinical veterinarians on the field of small animal clinics and surgical pathology To study on the reproductive pathology of farmed animals in an effort to treat reproductive disorders and promote efficiency in production To emphasize the researchs on toxicology for reducing environmental destruction and waste of natural resources Faculty

Formal Education Higher Education 1.Outline of Higher Education
The institutions for higher education in Japan consist of universities, junior colleges, colleges of technology and specialized training colleges (specialized schools) which offer specialized courses. Since the end of World War , the scale of higher education in Japan has expanded remarkably, particularly in the number of private institutions. Today the scale of higher education in Japan ranks among the highest in the world.
Universities and Graduate Schools The purpose of universities, as the centers of advanced learning, is to provide students with wide-ranging knowledge and to conduct in-depth teaching and research in specialized academic disciplines. The term of study is four years (six years for medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine). Graduates are awarded a bachelor's degree.
A university may also establish a graduate school offering master courses (two-year standard term of study) and doctoral courses (five-year standard term of study: four years for medicine, dentistry and veterinarian medicine) or professional degree courses (two-year standard term of study; however, depending on the field in some cases it can take between one and two years or more than three years). Those who have completed the graduate course are awarded either a master's , a doctorate or a professional degree.

Research Strategy
The Faculty's plans for development of its Garscube campus site require the expansion and upgrading of its existing research laboratory space. A major initiative in this respect is the construction of a core facility for the Institute of Comparative Medicine which will link our existing research blocks and bring all laboratory researchers on the site under one roof. The £6.7M development has been assured by a £5.08M award from the Wellcome Trust Science Research Investment Fund, with £1.62M from the University of Glasgow. Key elements of our of science strategy are considered under the main themes of the ICM :

Research Strategy - Summary

The mission of the Division of Developmental Medicine is to understand the genetic-environmental interactions, which underpin the physiology of normal and disordered growth and development, how they impact on health in infancy, childhood, pregnancy and adulthood, and to apply this knowledge to prevent, detect, and treat disease. The principal aim in the short to medium term is to consolidate research within the Division, by bringing together active researchers into strong groups in locations with optimum facilities and resources to undertake first-class work of international importance. Research activities will continue to be focussed largely on the GRI and Yorkhill sites, with important collaborations with research groups in other University locations. The clinical research capacity at GRI will be enhanced, with a strong focus on regulation of metabolism through creation of a Translational Research Unit , which will exploit the high prevalence of metabolic, nutritional and vascular disease in the West of Scotland to investigate their genesis and mechanisms.
