The ACVIM Board and staff members have made the decision to move the 2006 ACVIM Forum and exams to a new location. (With a convention the size of the ACVIM Forum and the number of speakers involved, it is critical that we start Forum planning now. We just don’t have the flexibility to wait a few months to see what might happen in New Orleans.) ACVIM has representatives from a convention services company researching various cities for availability of space at convention centers and hotels during the month of June 2006. We’ll know more on what’s available by mid-October and will keep you posted. We’re hoping to not have to change the dates of the 2006 Forum and exams, but we may not have a choice. The location change will not change any of the exam or credentials registration deadlines.

Cost of Education
The estimated cost of education for a Georgia resident is $13,804 per academic year. This estimate includes two semesters of tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, and personal expenses. An additional out-of-state fee assessed all non-Georgia residents increases this estimate to $26,024. Students of forest resources, law, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine will find the cost somewhat more because of higher fees required. The University reserves the right to change its fees, charges, rules, and regulations at the beginning of any term and without previous notice. This right will be exercised cautiously. To the Top

Pre-Veterinary Medicine
Students interested in becoming veterinarians may enroll in the College of Agriculture at the University of Kentucky and complete their requirements for admission to veterinary school. Although the Commonwealth of Kentucky does not have a school of veterinary medicine, it is a participating member of the Southern Regional Education Board plan, under which legal Kentucky residents may attend the Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine. Each year 34 students are chosen from Kentucky to enter the Auburn program. There is also a plan whereby two legal Kentucky residents may be accepted by the Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine each year. Under both of the above programs the students selected are exempt from the out-of-state tuition that would normally apply to a Kentucky resident. Admission is on a competitive basis with the final selection being made by a committee from each of the veterinary schools. Pre-veterinary studies is not a degree program, but a pre-professional curriculum. It is strongly recommended that all pre-veterinary students choose a degree goal early in their college career. Although it is possible to complete pre-vet requirements in three years, the majority of students accepted to Auburn have a B.S. or B.A. degree.

I Want To Go To Vet School But...
Deciding to apply to vet school is a big decision and a big commitment of time and financial resources. Many people wonder if they can "handle it" the stress of viewing/doing surgery, handling loss and death, etc., even before applying to vet school. What is your opinion or advice for this viewer? ACFUSCO asks: "I need advice; growing up I always assumed I would be a vet. I got side tracked though and ended up with a business degree. I have no desire for a typical business job and have some regret over not pursuing vet school. I have a much more positive feeling about being a vet, but there is one big problem - I am a bit scared over the thought of performing surgery, dealing with losses, etc. I really want to work with animals. Is it normal to have such a paranoia of surgery, etc.?"

The Practice Of Evidence-Based Veterinary Medicine

Review by Kathy Lyon
Click on stars for an explanation You may purchase this book in the VIN store
This book is written for veterinarians in the trenches those hard-working veterinarians who are busy balancing the needs of a busy practice, personal life, and chosen profession. Veterinarians try their best to keep up with the latest developments in veterinary medicine. They purchase the latest books, attend continuing education courses, and read numerous journals. This book will help those veterinarians put all of this information into a logical format in order to to reach a treatment plan for their cases. Evidence-based veterinary medicine (EBVM) is described here as the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients. This book basically tells veterinarians how to find logic and clarity in the morass of available information. Accurate interpretation of information is necessary, in order to be of benefit; this book teaches the reader how to accomplish that. I recommend this book. I suggest that veterinarians set aside time on a regular basis to read and comprehend the lessons.

Financial Aid
General Information
Financing the cost of professional education can be challenging.  It is the policy of the School that the primary responsibility for meeting this cost belongs to students and their families.  Financial aid available through the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University (TCSVM) and the federal student financial aid programs is awarded based on demonstrated financial need, and should be viewed as supplemental to family resources.  During the 2005-2006 academic year, more than 75% of students received some form of financial assistance. Financial aid awarded at TCSVM is based on a careful analysis of the student’s need.  The School requires that applicants who wish to be considered for School-based aid provide parents’ information.  In this way, family financial strength can be assessed and students whose personal and family resources are insufficient to cover expenses can be identified and receive highest priority for aid.  Exception to the parental information requirements may be made for students who have been financially independent of their parents for at least five years prior to matriculation at TCSVM.  Students who meet these criteria are advised to contact the financial aid office for more information.
