The first three years See Note 1 are concerned with the basic medical sciences and lead to the B.A. Degree. The final examination for the degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (Vet.M.B.) is taken after clinical courses which extend over a further three years.
The Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos
    Part IA
First-year veterinary students attend courses in Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology, Homeostasis, Molecules in Medical Science, Farm Animal Husbandry, Preparing for the Veterinary Profession, Cell Biology, Histology and Introduction to the Scientific Basis of Medicine. Farm Animal Husbandry and Preparing for the Veterinary Profession are not examined in the Tripos, but are examined in the Second Vet.M.B.
    Part IB
Second-year veterinary students attend courses in Veterinary Anatomy, Pathology, Pharmacology, General Veterinary Physiology and Special Veterinary Physiology. They are examined in all of these subjects in Part IB of the Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos at the end of their second year. Application to other Schools of veterinary medicine is also possible. Continue with general Education requirements such as English

The Pre-Veterinary Medicine
Most pre-veterinary students major in Animal Science, Biology or Chemistry because of the number of courses required in these areas but keep in mind that other majors are possible.
"Pre-veterinary " is not a major on its own. Requirements for a declared major and minor must be met to graduate. Students have the greatest success in applying to a veterinary school in the state in which they reside. For most UW-RF students these schools include the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and the University of Minnesota in St. Paul. These schools have similar course requirements for admission. Application to other Schools of Veterinary Medicine is also possible.
Recommended Curriculum
To meet veterinary school course requirements it is suggested that you follow a curriculum similar to that outlined below:
(The exact courses and the sequence of courses will vary some with your major, see the Academic Plan for your major for a more detailed description)
FRESHMAN YEAR English 111 (Freshman English)
English 112 or 112H (Freshman English)
Math 146 (College Algebra)
Math 147 (College Algebra and Trig)
Chemistry 121 (General Chemistry I and Lab I)
Chemistry 122 (General Chemistry II and Lab II)
Biology 150 (General Biology)
Animal Science 111 (Intro to Animal Science)
Animal Science 121 (Companion Animals) (not required, but recommended)

LUTHER COLLEGE Learning Academic Majors and Minors Preveterinary Medicine
Preveterinary Medicine at Luther
Doctors of veterinary medicine are concerned about the health and welfare of people as well as animals. Their main function, however, is to diagnose, treat, and control diseases and injuries among animals. Luther's curriculum prepares students exceptionally well for study at a college of veterinary medicine or graduate school of animal science. Each veterinary college has a specific set of requirements which must be fulfilled prior to acceptance. As a result, students are urged to work closely with the preveterinary adviser in planning their coursework at Luther. The preveterinary program is centered in the sciences, but a student may major in almost any academic discipline as long as preveterinary requirements are satisfied. Establishing a broad base of knowledge better equips a student to handle the complexities of veterinary medicine. All preveterinary students are encouraged to intern at least one January term assisting a veterinarian. Being involved in clinical work offers valuable experience and provides a realistic orientation to veterinary medicine. The program adviser will assist the student in arranging these internships and advise all preveterinary students regarding the Veterinary Aptitude Test, Graduate Record Examination, and Medical College Admission Test which are all frequently required as part of the veterinary college admission process.

Sign Up Now! We have compiled an article from questions many people and students have asked us about the becoming a veterinarian and being a vet. It is always good to see someone research and try to understand the details of a career before diving in. The veterinary profession is a hard yet rewarding one but it is only the ones that have a love for it that truly become fulfilled. Included are books that relate to the veterinary profession if you seriously interested in pursuing it. As always, we appreciate when you use our links to purchase books so that we can continue to offer our free educational database. What type of grades do you need to get into Vet School?    Let me say that it is statistically harder to get into a veterinary medicine college than it is to get into a human medical college because of the limited number of veterinary colleges(only 27 in the United States) compared to medical colleges. Therefore, your grades have to be very competitive.     Now this doesn't mean you have to be a straight A student. Veterinary colleges look at many factors in deciding who is a possible candidate including extra activities, experience in working with animals and more but a solid background in biology, science and math is usually desired. The good news is that the veterinary field has significantly diversified in the past decade so colleges also include individuals not from the "normal" statis quo.

Being a "pre-vet" student does not determine your major at Cal. While the majority of applicants to Veterinary Medical schools major in biological sciences, many pre-vet students major in the social sciences, business, humanities, and even engineering. There is no specific major required to apply to Veterinary Medical School. Look in Veterinary Medical School Admissions Requirements in the United States and Canada (available in the Career Center Information Lab.) and start choosing the right classes to take. Whatever major you decide upon, however, DVM (Doctor of Veterinary) programs generally require the following undergraduate coursework (specific University of California, Berkeley coursework in italics)

Ethiopia, that has the largest livestock population in Africa, established the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FVM) in 1979 under the jurisdiction of the Addis Ababa University (AAU). The Faculty started with a six year degree program in veterinary medicine. But in 1989 another school, the Institute for Animal Health Assistants, which was a diploma granting school run by the Commission for Higher Education, came under its jurisdiction. Since then FVM runs two educational programs: a six year doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine (DVM), and a two year diploma for animal health assistants.
Departments
The FVM currently has seven academic departments that specialize in various veterinary aspects.
