The Program Back to fact sheet index Veterinary School Preparation The pre-veterinary medicine program prepares students for admission to all veterinary colleges in the United States, Canada and selected foreign countries. Most North Dakota residents, however, prepare for admission to the veterinary colleges in Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Colorado, Washington, Oregon or California because of reciprocity, contractual or Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education (WICHE) tuition agreements with these states. Pre-veterinary students who are North Dakota residents must register with the State Board of Higher Education, (701) 328-4114, in the year of their application, in order to establish eligibility for contract seats with veterinary colleges. These contract seats allow accepted North Dakota residents to attend participating veterinary colleges for in-state tuition.

Clinical Pathology And Clinical Chemistry: A complete clinical pathology laboratory is present in the Teaching Hospital. Because of this, WADDL has seen no need to duplicate this service. Questions concerning that area should be directed to:
College of Veterinary Medicine Washington State University Pullman, WA 99164-6610 Phone (509) 335-0711 or 335-0745
Live Animals: The live, sick animal typical of the problem along with very recently dead animals are the submission samples of choice. The owner should deliver the animal directly to the Laboratory. If possible, more than one animal should be delivered. Cull or runt animal submissions are to be avoided as they may yield information that is misleading. Clients should be informed that live animals submitted to the Laboratory will not be returned. If an antemortem diagnosis is desired, arrangements should be made at the Teaching Hospital. Intact Carcass The biggest handicap the Laboratory has to overcome is post-mortem autolysis. It is extremely important that the animal be necropsied as soon after death as possible. Post-mortem autolysis and putrefaction lessen the chance of establishing a diagnosis with each passing hour. If the carcass is small it should be refrigerated if possible. Do not enclose in a plastic bag until the carcass is well chilled. The bag will hasten autolysis from entrapped body heat. If long delays are anticipated, the carcass should be frozen. Remember, however, freezing prohibits using tissues for histopathology and makes isolation of some pathogens impossible.

    http://www.westernu.edu/prospective/ada/dvm_general.xml
Prospective Students Welcome Admissions Preparation Tips ... Much More Doctor of Veterinary Medicine FAQs: General Prerequisites Curriculum Doctor of Veterinary Medicine FAQs - General Print PDF What type of medicine can I practice when I graduate from WesternU-CVM? Western University graduates will be capable of immediate, positive participation in the professional field of their choosing; small animal/exotic/equine/large animal/zoo clinical and/or ambulatory practice; production (dairy, poultry, aquaculture) practice; shelter medicine; wildlife medicine; federal/state/local government; basic/clinical research; international consultation and more! Is WesternU-CVM accredited? On March 4, 2001 the WesternU-CVM received a letter of reasonable assurance from the AVMA allowing the establishment of the College of Veterinary Medicine with preliminary accreditation status. WesternU-CVM was converted to the status of Provisional Accreditation the day acceptance letters went out (March 14, 2003). Every element of our plan is in place to reach full accreditation and so we expect everything will go smoothly at our next site visit in the fall of 2004. Applicants and students should also realize that, if the student enters the curriculum in an accredited school (as we are now), even if accreditation is withdrawn during his or her course of study, the student will still be considered a graduate of an accredited school. It is the college's status at admission that dictates the status of the student at graduation. Therefore, the student's ability to sit for the board exam and practice veterinary medicine is protected both by the university and by the accrediting agency.

Examples include; abdominal, thoracic, urinary, oral, and perineal surgery, skin reconstruction, and head and neck surgery. The soft tissue service works in coordination with the both the internal medicine and oncology services to provide in-house consultation and surgical services. Initiating a Referral Referring veterinarians should contact the Auburn University-Small Animal Teaching Hospital Appointment desk for information on referral. It is the policy of the general surgery service to speak with referring veterinarians prior to referral. The AU-SATH appointment desk will facilitate this communication. Referring an Emergency Case Emergency referrals are seen at the discretion of the attending surgeon. For genuine emergencies, immediate referral is almost always available. When the patient needs to be seen ASAP, the attending surgeon will try to make all reasonable accommodations. Again, it is important to contact the AU-SATH appointment desk so that all parties can work together.
