Considering that the world of a pet owner often revolves around her cat or dog, rabbit or guinea pig, this is not such a dramatic statement. Whether it's a homemade plate of organic food morning and night or a slice of pie straight from the table, little hand-knit sweaters or a Halloween costume tailored for four legs, our domesticated loved ones often get treated to more and better of what we give ourselves. Lisa Pesch specializes in acupuncture, homeopathy, and herbal remedieson animals. From cats to dogs, horses to rabbitseven fishno domesticated creature need go without the healing power of a well-placed acupuncture needle. In a sense, it's quintessential California. Whereas in much of the country alternative medicines are still met with a confused, squinting "Huh?", in California even the cats get arnica.

A Harmony Hill Llama Farm llama at Tufts Animal Expo
(October 1, 2002) - After a slow start, alternative therapies are increasingly finding acceptance in the field of veterinary medicine - both in the United States and abroad. The trend, which began about two decades ago, is accelerating. From September 28 to October 1, the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (AHVMA) is holding its annual conference in Eugene, Oregon. Several hundred veterinarians who use or are interested in alternative therapies are in attendance. The organization was founded twenty years ago and its membership "has steadily grown since its inception," according to the AHVMA. A particularly noteworthy sign of the growing interest in holistic, or complementary alternative medicine (CAM), approaches in conventional veterinary medicine - things like nutrition, homeopathy, herbal medicine, acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and veterinary chiropractic - is the decision by Tufts University's School of Veterinary Medicine in North Grafton, Massahusetts to expand the teaching of it. From September 12-15, Tufts, one of the nation's leading veterinary medical schools, sponsored its third annual

Back MAGNETIC FIELDS, HEALING AND VETERINARY MEDICINE First broadcast on www.provet.co.uk This information is provided by Provet for educational purposes only. You should seek the advice of your veterinarian if your pet is ill as only he or she can correctly advise on the diagnosis and recommend the treatment that is most appropriate for your pet. There is growing interest in the application of magnetic forces on healing in a variety of tissues including bone and nerves. Considerable research is underway in a variety of species to determine whether or not the use of magnetic fields has any benefits in wound repair. In rodents it has been used to enhance early facial nerve regeneration (1), to enhance skin healing (12) (13), and to promote healing in ruptured achilles tendons (6). In rabbits it has been shown to increase bone strength (2), and it accelerates bone healing in guinea pigs (4). Lipid signal transduction in human cell lines has been shown to be affected in various ways by pulsed magnetic fields (3). Proteoglycan production is down regulated when chick cartilage extracellular matrix is exposed to pulsed electromagnetic fields (7) (8), and in two double-blind trials (17) (19) decreased pain and improved performance were recorded in human patients with osteoarthritis (mainly involving the knee) and pain improvement was also reported in post-polio human patients in another double-blind study (18) Positive vascular effects have been reported in human patients with hypertension (9) and in vitro reconstructive surgery of major arteries (10), and enhanced bowel healing has been reported in rats (11). Cancer cell growth has been reported to be slowed (14) in vitro. In a double-blind placebo-controlled study (15) pulsing magnetic field significantly improved patients with multiple sclerosis - based on performance scales and alpha EEG magnitude during a language task. In another randomized, double-blind controlled clinical trial ulcers in leprosy patients healed more rapidly following exposure to pulsed magnetic fields (16).

Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine: Principles and Practice More Information
About CIAH Dr. Allen M. Schoen How you can help Books by Dr. Schoen ... Articles by Dr. Schoen The field of complementary and alternative medicine is rapidly expanding in both human and veterinary medical practice. This North American text seeks to cover the current state of the art in the veterinary profession. It is a lucid and highly informative book suitable for both students new to the field and established practitioners. I am sure it will remain a definitive source of information on these issues for the foreseeable future. "Complementary and alternative medicine" should be viewed as an umbrella term encompassing an array of very different conceptual approaches and techniques. Thus, for an comprehensive text in this field, the sheer volume and diversity of subject matter that needs to be addressed can present a problem. In order to tackle this diversity, the editors systematically divide the book into nine Units (each comprising a number of chapters) and seven Appendices (which list further sources of information). This successfully allows each topic to be viewed within its broader framework and allows easy reference to specific subject areas. The first introductory chapter (in Unit 1 Fundamentals) covers some of the underlying philosophy and history from a Western perspective. The diverse group of therapeutic systems involved unfolds, and care is taken to point out some of the complexity of these different approaches. The Units that follow (Units 2 to 6) cover the following: nutrition (from preventative to cancer therapy); physical medicine (including acupuncture, Chinese herbs, chiropractic care and massage); energetic medicine, botanical medicine (including Western herbal, Chinese and Ayurvedic); and homeopathy. A "Miscellaneous Therapies" unit then covers environmental medicine, aromatherapy and Bach flower remedies.

117. Alternative Medicine For Dogs
Traditional Western medicine is excellent in diagnosing disease and in Two things have been ingrained in the teaching of veterinarians for years 1)

R.M. Clemmons, DVM, PhD Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences
Introduction:
Traditional Western medicine is excellent in diagnosing disease and in treating acute disease. However, the treatment of chronic immune disease and cancer have yet to achieve the same level of success. Part of this is due to the fact that these conditions respond slowly and best when the healing system is taken into account during the treatment process. Eastern medicine, which involves long-term changes in "life-style", has many aspects which make it better in treating chronic conditions, since the goal of Eastern medicine is to support the healing system. A new concept which is beginning to take hold in the West is "Integrative Medicine", where the best of both Western and Eastern medicine are combined to offer the patient the best chances of returning to health. If an animal breaks its leg, it needs to be taken to an emergency facility to have it diagnosed and "set". Once this has been performed, then the patient needs to heal, by whatever means supports that best. This series of pages is designed to explain certain changes in diet, life-style and supplements for which there is ample scientific evidence to suggest that they will help animals stay healthy and to assist them when healing from disease. Many of the recommendations are good for all dogs, while others recommendations are made for specific conditions. Some of the measures should be initiated early in the life of the dog, so that their maximal impact in improving the dog's "life-style" can be seen. Other measures should be added as the dog ages to help maintain health through all phases of life. The effects of "lifestyle" changes will always be seen; however, these measures are better at preventing disease, than stopping it when the disease process is far advanced. It is never to soon for healthy choices. As with any form of medication or treatment protocol, consult with your veterinarian about the appropriateness of these suggestions for your dog.

http://www.vin.com/VINDBPub/SearchPB/Proceedings/PR05000/PR00001.htm
Alternative Feeding Practices Susan Wynn United States Over the past decades, the pet food industry has provided convenient and economical foods for domestic animals. Because the public has become comfortable with the idea that commercial pet foods can provide complete and balanced nutrition for the life of the animal, basic diet is no longer generally considered an important source of disease. Pet owners and veterinarians have literally been trained to look elsewhere for causes and treatment options. By ignoring the basic diet when advising pet owners, doctors and retailers are forgetting basic physiological principles: the importance of fresh and varied foods in the diet and biochemical individuality. What food consumer in their right mind would believe that food in a bag or can would provide all the nutrition they (personally) would ever need? This is the basis for most “alternative feeding philosophies.” Individual Requirements The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) has published dietary recommendations for domestic species in the form of nutrient profiles. These nutrient profile recommendations are the result of expert evaluations of National Research Council (NRC) recommendations. The NRC recommendations were based on diets using purified nutrients, assuming 100 percent bioavailability. AAFCO, an organization composed of government, academic, and industry experts, evaluated these recommendations and initiated legislation requiring improved testing and labeling of pet foods (Dzanis, 1995). All pet foods must now conform either to AAFCO nutrient profiles or undergo AAFCO approved feeding trials before being marketed.

INTRODUCTION Acupuncture is a major part of Oriental Medicine, a system of health care based on the principal of balancing energy flow in the body to correct physiological function. In itself, acupuncture is used to address physical, psychological and emotional problems. Often, it is practiced along with Asian herbal medicine and massage. Acupuncture originated in China (see our Traditional Chinese Medicine Resource Guide) more than 2,500 years and spread first throughout Asia, and later to Europe and the Americas. While it has been offered in the Asian communities throughout the United States for many generations, it is only since 1970, following the opening of China to the West, that this system of health care has been available to the general population in this country. The basic mechanism of acupuncture has recently been described as operating similar to a secondary neurological system or "information system" in the body, with the act of stimulating an acupuncture point seen as communicating information vital to basic physical functions. The central concept is that if the circulation of information is disrupted, optimum function is affected and this results in pain or illness. While this theory is in its infancy, several lines of inquiry seem to support this concept. In addition to this basic conceptual work, there are projects investigating the clinical effects of treatment as well as several types of basic research. In a later section of this guide, the clinical research information is described. The basic research work has shown acupuncture’s effect on ACTH, insulin, thyroid hormones, growth stimulating hormone, beta-endorphin, white blood cell production and plasma cholesterol levels.
