"Holistic medicine" is rapidly becoming one of the hottest trends in veterinary care. Just as a growing number of Americans are seeking "alternative therapies" to care for their own health, they are seeking non-conventional treatments for their pets. Holistic veterinarians employ a variety of alternative therapies - including homeopathy, acupuncture, herbs and nutrition and chiropractic therapies. Many also combine these with more conventional medicine.
Even mainstream vets are adopting some of these approaches as "complementary therapies" to conventional medicine and veterinary schools are adding courses in alternative medicine to their curriculum. As early as 1999, the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine added an acupuncturist to its clinical program and in 2001, Tufts University added courses on the use of holistic treatments to its School of Veterinary Medicine curriculum. Alternative approaches
In general, holistic medicine focuses on therapies that help the body heal itself. Rather than suppressing symptoms, holistic veterinarians attempt to address underlying imbalances and stimulate the animal's own healing. Some of the more widely used alternative therapies include:
    • Acupuncture Homeopathy — Homeopaths believe that symptoms of illness are a reflection of an imbalance in the patient's "vital force." The basic principle of homeopathy is called the Law of Similars, which means that "like cures like." Homeopaths believe that a substance that

    Healing or Health Fraud?
    A Critique of Evidence-deficient Medicine
With Answers to Frequently Asked Questions Recently I encountered a man who spent his entire life savings on an alternative "therapy" that failed to improve his health. In fact scientific research has thus far shown the treatment to be worthless. Therapists who ignore evidence and misrepresent potential health benefits are practicing deception. Health improvement promises should not exceed the strength of available evidence, and consumers should be advised of the most effective treatments available. Disregard for evidence is particularly noticeable among advocates of "alternative" practices. These include naturopathy, iridology, reflexology, reiki, rolfing, traditional Chinese medicine, therapeutic touch, homeopathy, cranio-sacral therapy, crystal therapy, chelation therapy, blood cell analysis, energy therapy, intuitive therapy, and others. Claims regarding many of these practices are evidence-deficient and some have been largely discredited. Following are examples of statements from investigations that should serve as warnings to consumers:
    • Naturopathic Medicine: "Naturopathic medicine is an eclectic assortment of pseudoscientific, fanciful, and unethical practices" (Atwood 2003).

There has been a popular surge of support for natural medicines, whether in human or animal fields, over the last two decades. This is running side-by-side with the new environmental and health awareness, that is already becoming a feature of the 21st Century. Homoeopathy (a.k.a. Homeopathy or Homœopathy), Herbs and Acupuncture are the most well-known of the natural therapies used. They will be briefly described here. There are, however, several other worthwhile branches of alternative medicine, also referred to as holistic, natural or complementary medicine. Identity problems aside, what is embraced by these therapies is a common thread, that of applying a stimulus to the body's own healing powers. Herbs alone also exert a direct pharmacological effect and did, in fact, spawn conventional medicine. The therapies that I use are Homoeopathy, Acupuncture, Moxibustion, Herbs, Tissue Salts, Aromatherapy, Bach Flowers, Laser, Ultra-sound, Chiropractic, Nutrition. I add nutrition because, without it, I believe there is no good medicine. As a basis of all my work, I recommend a natural, clean, fresh, varied, preferably organic diet, suited to the evolved needs of each species.

Introduction To Holistic Veterinary Medicine What do you do if a member of your family is given a diagnosis of incurable illness? Most people would not stop at one doctor's opinion, or stop looking for treatments when it becomes a little more troublesome. This scenario of relative desperation is how most people, and even doctors, find alternative medicine. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) gives doctors and patients an entirely new arsenal with which to treat many diseases, including arthritis, allergies, behavior problems, and many more.
What is alternative veterinary medicine? No good definition exists, although some have defined it thus: diagnostic and treatment modalities (systems of medicine) not commonly taught in medical schools. Certainly it is that, but to understand alternative veterinary medicine better, we need to describe it. You may have heard other terms for alternative medicine. Complementary medicine just means that these methods are used in addition to, and not instead of, conventional medicine.

From the inception of CVC in 1972, one of our goals has been to evaluate each patient's health profile and offer the best treatment approach for that pet. We carefully assess and address which medical options to integrate for each individual pet's overall care and well-being. As always prevention is the best way to maintain good health. An integrated "holistic" approach provides the safest, most effective, and quite often, the least expensive method, when used in conjunction with our traditional Western medicine. Welcome to

As evidence of growing acceptance and analysis of non-traditional medicine, the November 11, 1998, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association was dedicated to the subject of Alternative Medicine in the United States. Likewise in Veterinary Medicine, we are seeing an openness to modalities not often performed in veterinary clinics in the past, and we continue to stay on the cutting edge of Wellness for your pet.

As interest in alternative medicine continues to grow, Dr. Joe and Sonya Landholm have made a gift of more than $50,000 to support acupuncture education within the K-State College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Joseph and Sonya Landholm have made a gift of more than $50,000 to the KSU Foundation to establish the Dr. Joseph E. and Sonya M. Landholm Endowed Fund. The funds will be used to benefit instruction in alternative medicine within the K-State College of Veterinary Medicine. "We are extremely grateful to the Landholms for making this gift and putting K-State in the forefront of most veterinary colleges,” Associate Professor Dr. Judy Cox said. “As interest in alternative medicine continues to grow, we will be better able to support and assist those students who have an interest in learning about a specialty outside of the basic veterinary curriculum." In recent years, as the popularity of human and animal alternative medicine has soared, the K-State College of Veterinary Medicine has seen a slight increase in the number of inquiries regarding acupuncture. Most of the inquiries are from clients who are interested in finding out the pros and cons of the controversial, ancient Chinese modality. Even if a veterinarian chooses not to practice or promote acupuncture, it is important for them to be knowledgeable about the procedure when their clients begin asking questions.
