The term acupuncture is a European term, coined by the Dutch physician Willem Teri Rhyne, who introduced acupuncture to Europe following a two year stay in Nagasaki, Japan in 1683. Acupuncture is very useful in alleviating pain and increasing the animal's own resistance to disease. It can be used very effectively to complement orthodox treatments, especially in chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis, spinal/back problems and chronic skin disease. General recommendations suggest patients should be initially seen for weekly treatment. After the first two to three treatments, if a patient is responding, repeated sessions required depend on the particular condition. After a period of time the treatment may wear off; this is more common in chronic painful conditions, e.g. osteoarthritis and consequently top–up or booster doses may be required, e.g. every one to six months. Other conditions may be completely cured by acupuncture.
