Mission Statement
Library Media Center Information
The Library Media Center is the research center for the school. It contains books, periodicals, audiovisual materials, and a variety of electronic resources. It is open every school day from 8:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. The card catalog is automated and can be accessed from any network computer. This powerful tool allows you to search by title, author, subject, series, call number, or keyword. You can also limit your search to certain types of materials (films, recordings, e.g.) or to only those materials published during a certain year or range of years. If you have never used this kind of research tool before you may need to consult someone on the library staff. The Internet is available on network computers, including those in the library. You must contact the computer coordinator and agree to abide by the school’s rules for Internet use (Acceptable Use Policy) before being allowed to use this resource. Welcome to the Vermont Folklife Center Archive!
The Vermont Folklife Center Archive contains the products of the Center’s ethnographic research work. The archive holds a wealth of folklife materials preserved on an array of media formats including more than 3,800 audio taped interviews, approximately 200 video tapes, 15,000 slides and photographs, manuscripts, and other documentation organized into over 100 distinct collections. Our holdings are constantly growing. The Vermont Folklife Center documents the past and present of Vermont through the voices of everyday Vermonters. Founded in 1984, the Center researches and preserves the historic and contemporary folklife of our communities through audio and video interviews, photography, traditional arts apprenticeships, exhibits, publications, workshops and educational outreach. The Center is recognized both locally and nationally as a significant contributor to the emerging field of "cultural conservation," the effort to preserve America’s intangible heritage – those skills, talents, and traditions passed down informally through the generations, and the day-to-day experiences of people living in the present. We established the archive to preserve and provide access to the products of our research. Please feel free to contact the VFC archivist for more information about your particular areas of interest. For information on materials in the archive, including access to our prototype Archive Explorer, please see our Archive Resources page. ::

Putting Tablets in schools intelligently- The Vermont Slate
I have mentioned The Vermont Slate in the past which is the work of Mark Payton of the Vermont Academy. They have a comprehensive program that is putting Tablet PCs in the hands of their students and more importantly giving them the skill sets needed to maximize the benefits that students can derive from using Tablet PCs. They have recently published an article that provides a lot of online resources for developing good note taking skills and leveraging that on the Tablet PC. The article also discusses the need for good time management skills and how important online research is to students today. This is an excellent blog and highly recommended for anyone interested in maximizing the Tablet PC experience in education. She was previously a staff attorney with Electronic Frontier Foundation , focused on intellectual property and free speech issues. Prior to joining EFF, Wendy taught Internet Law as an Adjunct Professor at St. John's University School of Law Wendy founded and leads the Chilling Effects clearinghouse , a project to study and combat the ungrounded legal threats that chill activity on the Internet. In conjunction with the EFF and law school clinics across the country, we invite recipients and senders of cease and desist notices to submit these notices for analysis, in issue-spotting FAQ-style memos, and inclusion in our database. The website offers resources for Internet users who face legal threats, and, through its collection of data, we hope to analyze the out-of-court effects of those threats to chill legitimate activity, or, conversely, the extent to which unlawful activity on the Net proves resistant to legal action. Chilling Effects has been featured in the New York Times and Boston Globe , as well as several court filings.

Teachers are discovering the benefits of collaboration with the Library/Media Specialists to extend their classroom into the Library/Media Center. Communication is essential for successful collaboration between teachers and Library Media Specialists. This can be accomplished through cooperative planning, setting school goals, flexible scheduling and integrating programs. Information Literacy Skills and Technology Training provide opportunities for teachers and Library/Media Specialists to communicate and establish the groundwork for collaborating. This also is a chance for making material's requests and may help ensure that specific curriculum resources are available. Lesson plans are created together working towards meeting the Vermont Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities Technology has become a major resource for educators. The Library/Media Specialists have become key figures in teaching the school community how to use this technology. Students use an electronic card catalog instead of an index card catalog.
