Each year, Congressman Sanders receives dozens of inquiries from young Vermonters who wish to attend a military service academy. One of the application requirements of all of the U.S. service academies (except for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy) is a political nomination, and the most common type of nomination is a Congressional one. Please note that an application deadline applies; the links for each service academy provide information about deadlines and other application requirements. Also please note that Congressman Sanders generally considers applications only from Vermont residents and children of Vermont residents. Here are the steps to follow in seeking a nomination from Congressman Sanders to the service academies: Please Note: Due to ongoing delays in mail delivery please send all Service Academy correspondence by fax to Congressman Sanders' Washington office at (202) 225-6790.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Sharon Shea-Keneally, principal of Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, Vermont, was shocked when she received a letter in May from military recruiters demanding a list of all her students, including names, addresses, and phone numbers. The school invites recruiters to participate in career days and job fairs, but like most school districts, it keeps student information strictly confidential. "We don't give out a list of names of our kids to anybody," says Shea-Keneally, "not to colleges, churches, employersnobody." But when Shea-Keneally insisted on an explanation, she was in for an even bigger surprise: The recruiters cited the No Child Left Behind Act, President Bush's sweeping new education law passed earlier this year. There, buried deep within the law's 670 pages, is a provision requiting public secondary schools to provide military recruiters not only with access to facilities, but also with contact information for every studentor face a cutoff of all federal aid.

Norwich University

The nation's oldest private military academy of Northfield, Vermont.
T he history of Norwich University in Vermont is long. From its original site in Norwich in 1819 to the present day Northfield location, Norwich University is a treasure not only to Vermont, but to the entire nation.
Founded in 1819 as "The American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy", Norwich University is the earliest and one of the most prestigious military academies in the nation; steeped in the idea of a liberal, yet firm curriculum that facilitates learning. Norwich still stands in the shadow of its founder, Captain Alden Partridge, and holds true to the ideals he based his development of the university upon. Captain Partridge believed that life learning could not come from books alone. Education was, and still is something that is experienced, not simply learned. Captain Partridge devised a system of learning that was not purely based in military science, nor was it based purely in liberal arts and science. His system of education used teachings from the military history of our nation and a broad base of liberal studies. Within that system, the teachings were not kept separate from one another, military teachings referenced civilian studies and vice versa.

Whether students select the traditional lifestyle or the military lifestyle, they are challenged with leadership experiences and receive a balanced, rigorous education, allowing them to act as well as think and to execute as well as conceive. Norwich University has always been a prestigious and innovative university, with a number of historical firsts to its record. Norwich was the first private military college in the nation, the birthplace of ROTC, the first private college in the nation to teach engineering, and the model for the world-renowned American System of Education. These are only a few of the firsts. The list goes on and on, both in the past and in the present. Norwich University offers 30 academic programs and numerous co-curricular activities designed to challenge students. With a 14-1 student-to-faculty ratio, students receive personalized attention from Ph.D's, not graduate students. With opportunities for undergraduate research, internships, and study abroad, Norwich's reputation for being hands-on and experiential comes to life. Capping the challenging residential undergraduate programs is a group of online master's degree programs that sport academic outcomes in the top five-percent of the nation. A tightly knit group of individuals throughout their lives, Norwich alumni are a veritable who's who in the formation of this country, achieving distinction both in the past and in the present day.

Introduction to Army ROTC
To assist the PMS, the Army assigns officers as Assistant Professors of Military Science (APMS) and Noncommissioned Officers as Training Instructors to the Department of Military Science. Officers and NCOs are assigned as a class instructor and advisors for each of the four Military Science year groups. The authority for the ROTC program predates most of the colleges and universities in the West. The Reserve Officers' Training Corps of the Army has a long and honorable history, even older than the law which formally established it in 1916. In 1819 Captain Alden Partridge, a former Superintendent of the Military Academy , founded the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy (now Norwich University ) in Northfield , Vermont . This was the first American institution of higher education to prescribe military training as part of its curriculum. Prior to the Civil War, additional colleges and universities offered military training; but it was not until 1862, during the Civil War, that military training in our colleges received the impetus which is still present today. Representative Justin Morrill of Vermont sponsored an act to provide grants of land, and later money, for colleges that would offer military training along with training in agriculture and the mechanical arts.
