Department of Defense denies federal funding to schools that ban military recruiting
From Wikinews, the free news source you can write!
June 2, 2005
The U.S. Defense Department has denied federal funding to two law schools because they do not allow military recruiters on campus. Now the U.S. House of Representatives is putting forward a new law that would require the Secretary of Defense to compile a list of colleges and universities that don't allow the military to recruit on campus. Vermont Law School has already been denied federal funding. William Mitchell College of Law and Vermont Law School (not affiliated with the University of Vermont ) have already been barred from federal funding for violating the Solomon amendment, a 10-year old law that "the armed forces cannot be denied access to students". Legislators recently passed a measure that would require the Secretary of Defense to provide a list of schools whose cooperation it is unsatisfied with. Representative Cliff Sterns (R-FL) is pushing through the House an amendment that would toughen the Solomon amendment, a law which states "Any college that prohibits the U.S. military from establishing or operating an

FIELD TRAINING EXERCISES (FTX): With the foundation of knowledge and skills provided through the class and lab curriculum, it is time to put them to practical use during a Field Training Exercise. These are off-campus training opportunities, usually conducted at Camp Dodge in Johnston, a suburb of Des Moines. There is one FTX per semester and they are held over a weekend. During a FTX the cadets are able to put their skills, abilities and teamwork to the test as they progress through the land navigation courses, rappel tower, weapons qualification range, Leadership Reaction Course, Grenade Assault Course, Confidence/Obstacle Course, and squad tactical lanes. The cadets are able to get practical leadership experience and feedback by rotating through a variety of leadership positions as they lead their teams through these events. Transportation, housing, meals, uniforms and equipment are all provided for the cadets during the FTX.
ROTC LEADERSHIP COURSES These are courses specifically designed for Army ROTC cadets. LTC is for those needing to obtain equivalent credit for the first two years of ROTC and LDAC is a required course for cadets who advance into the third and fourth years of ROTC.

Military Schools for Troubled Teenagers
The public school system of today is not fully equipped to handle troubled teenagers. Often times, parents turn to military schools as an option to discipline and educate their troubled teenagers. Military schools , which seemed headed for extinction in the late 1960s and early '70s, have seen enrollments increase steadily in recent years. Many military schools are jammed to capacity and sport long waiting lists, as anxious parents scramble for slots. This website will give more information about military schools as an option for troubled teens as well as other alternatives for troubled teens. Vermont Army National Guard
The Vermont Army National Guard maintains 26 armories, and is present in 22 communities. The men and women of the Vermont National Guard are dedicated, combat ready citizen soldiers, committed to serving their community, state, and nation, while facing future challenges and opportunities united in spirit as one Guard. The Vermont Army National Guard went through many reorganizations in the 1960s. The Vermont Guard went from being part of the 43rd Division to the 50th Armored Division and in 1988 the Brigade rejoined the 26th Yankee Division. At the present time, Vermont's Brigade is part of the 42nd Infantry Division. Vermont has a unique history of citizen soldiers that goes back to the beginning of the country. Tracing their legacy to the Green Mountain Boys of the Revolutionary War, today's Vermont National Guard is as relevant today as it carries on the militia tradition in our nation's defense.

The Few the Proud: Activists offers students alternatives to the military Tall and soft-spoken, with a gentle expression that reveals no trace of teen attitude, John said he has wanted to be a soldier since he was about 10. But it was a military recruiter standing in the hallway of his high school last year that set the wheels in motion. With wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. armed forces are experiencing acute staffing shortages. And with the president pledging not to reinstitute the draft, recruitment pressure is on. In Vermont, a growing number of groups have set up displays in high school hallways to try to get a broader message to teens. Under federal law, military recruiters must be allowed to enter U.S. public high schools. And any high school that receives federal education funding is required to supply Washington, D.C., with the names, addresses, and phone numbers of its juniors and seniors, unless a parent or guardian asks the school in writing not to do so. In July, the Pentagon said recruitment targets for active duty units have been met, with the exception of the Army National Guard. The Guard came in 12 percent below its target this year, as more Guard members are deployed overseas.

The school invites recruiters to participate in career days and job fairs, but like most school districts, it keeps student information strictly confidential. "We don't give out a list of names of our kids to anybody," says Shea-Keneally, "not to colleges, churches, employers nobody." But when Shea-Keneally insisted on an explanation, she was in for an even bigger surprise: The recruiters cited the No Child Left Behind Act, President Bush's sweeping new education law passed earlier this year. There, buried deep within the law's 670 pages, is a provision requiring public secondary schools to provide military recruiters not only with access to facilities, but also with contact information for every student or face a cutoff of all federal aid.

In February, the Peace & Justice Center decided to organize counter military recruitment trainings for Vermonters who want to table in schools, career fairs, or educate their community in other creative ways on the myths of military enlistment. What are Indonesia's Special Forces doing in Vermont?
    by Terry J. Allen
In These Times magazine, October 1999
Quietly tucked away in the Vermont hills, the only private military college in the country has been educating and training current and future members of the Indonesian army. During homecoming week at Norwich University, parents strolled the bucolic campus, crimson leaves glistening in the bright fall sunshine. A world away, that same hue ran in the streets of East Timor.
The Norwich program, which includes both undergraduate and graduate military training, was arranged in 1997 by high-ranking Indonesian military officers suspected of committing crimes against humanity in East Timor. One general was head of Indonesia's repressive intelligence apparatus; the other gave the shoot-to-kill order in a 1989 massacre and has publicly supported the creation of civilian militias in Indonesia.
In 1997, 12 Indonesian undergraduates and 10 graduate students entered Norwich. They were selected "by the Indonesian Embassy in Washington" and paid for "with funds wired by order of the military attaché," says Thomas Greene, director of public relations at Norwich. The Indonesians presented a list of students; Norwich accepted all of them. At least 11 of them listed the same billing address: the headquarters of Kopassus, Indonesia's notorious special forces.
Ostensibly civilians, the undergrads who enrolled in the 4-year, ROTC-linked "corps of cadets" program are obligated to serve six years in the Indonesian military after graduation. Most of the Indonesian graduate students-active-duty officers in the Indonesian army, with ranks from first lieutenant to major-graduated last spring with master's degrees in military science and diplomacy and returned home. At least four went to East Timor.
