For more than 30 years the Vietnamese fought the imperialism of France, Japan, France again (with U.S. financing) and finallyafter preventing an election that Ho Chi Minh would have won overwhelminglythe 10 year U.S. war on Vietnam was pre-emptively started. Before it was over more than 3 million Vietnamese, Laotians and Cambodians were dead as well as nearly 60,000 Americans. Never again!!! O ur Green Mountain chapter was formed on March 16, 1991 in response to the devastating U.S. war against Iraq. We took part in anti-war activities across Vermont that year. In the following years we carried out counter military recruitment activities in the the high schools and debated pro-war and pro-imperialist speakers and government officials in public settings and on TV and radio. We have marched as an anti-war alternative to the various veterans for war organizations in Memorial Day and 4th of July and Gay/Lesbian Pride parades across the state. We have traveled to Washington, D.C. for anti-war and anti-corporate globalization protests in recent years (see photos below).

These results stand as a stark empirical testament to what UVM student debaters have done this year. Charitable Venture Foundation, joined by several local sources, has supported the work of the 12 AESP schools. A comprehensive assessment of AESP was completed in June 2005 and is reported in a monograph written by David Holmes and Rick Dalton, entitled Peak Experiences: Raising Aspirations and Educational Achievement of Rural Youth in Adirondack Communities , published in August 2005. It was from my school district, and buried in the ad's fine print was an announcement that the local high school would be sending the names and phone numbers for all juniors and seniors to U.S. military recruiters. This is more than a back-door assault on student privacy. It may have life-or-death consequences for unwitting kids who are contacted by recruiters. This student information give-away was mandated in a little-known provision of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, President Bush's sweeping education law. The law went into effect in 2002, but many schools only became aware of the obscure military recruiting provision in the last year. Schools risk losing all federal aid if they fail to provide military recruiters full access to their students; the aid is contingent on complying with federal law. This recruiting access provision is different from draft registration. Military conscription ended in 1973, but starting in 1980, 18-year-old males have been required to register for possible military call-up.

There also has been significant discussion of the overextension of the U.S military and the possibility of a draft. Although it seems unlikely that the Bush administration is going to reinstate the draft and commit political suicide right now, it is important for individuals to be aware of what is happening in Iraq and the work that is being done in the US to demilitarize our society and schools, and accelerate resistance to this war and occupation. On January 28th and 29th a variety of organizations on campus and in the community brought Kevin Ramirez from the Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors (CCCO) (www.objector.org) to Burlington to lead two workshops on Conscientious Objection and Counter Recruitment.
