Statement of Trina Magi on the Patriot Act's Effects on Vermont Libraries
The following statement was given by Trina Magi, Library Assistant Professor at the University of Vermont and past president of the Vermont Library Association, at a press conference with Representative Sanders. Good morning. I’m Trina Magi. I’m past president of Vermont Library Association and a reference librarian at the University of Vermont. Librarians in Vermont are deeply concerned about the ways the USA PATRIOT Act affects library users. In just the last three weeks, 100 librarians and libraries across the state have signed on to a letter expressing those concerns. We believe that when you use your library, information about the books you check out and the Web sites you look at should be private.

NEW! Sharing the good and bad of hospital librarianship at the Spring '05 meeting The Spring 2005 meeting brought together the members of the Health Sciences Libraries of New Hampshire and Vermont in a forum to share the successes they've experienced in their libraries, as well as some of the challenges. With so many creative and dedicated professionals, it wasn't surprising to discover that among our numbers we counted a published author and an enterprising playwright, just to point out two of the many achievements announced. Much of the strength of the HSLNH/VT group comes from a willing exchange of ideas and helpful support from our colleagues, and this meeting highlighted that strength. Also highlighted at the Spring meeting was the dedication and achievement of Norma Phillips, who retired after more than 30 years at Lakes Region General Hospital. Norma was a founding member of HSLNH/VT, and we all appreciate her many efforts on behalf of the group. Luckily, she's going to participate in HSLNH/VT from retirement, so we're not losing her completely! Click here for Spring '05 meeting minutes

    Books and pamphlets:
The largest collections in the library are books and pamphlets that date from the 1770s to the present and cover all aspects of Vermont history. The library also has limited holdings in the history of other New England states, northeastern New York State, and neighboring Canada. Books are cataloged in the main card catalog; there are special catalogs for Vermont biographies and imprints. An annotated copy of Marcus McCorrison's Vermont Imprints, 1778-1820 can help researchers locate early printed materials. A computer terminal provides access to the catalogs of Vermont's academic and public libraries through the Vermont Automated Library System (VALS) The VHS library collections complement holdings at other institutions.
    Genealogy:
The VHS library is the largest genealogical library in the state. The library collects family histories, published vital records, cemetery inscriptions, town histories, indices to censuses, published military records, and biographical compendia for Vermont, New England, and the neighboring regions of New York and Canada. The library also has research method books, books on heraldry and family names, and journals of several genealogical societies. The Vermont Society of Colonial Dames genealogy collection is housed at the VHS. Among the library's special aids for genealogy researchers are HeritageQuest online databases; the

Opposition to USA Patriot Act Is Growing November 14, 2002 By Chris Finan, ABFFE President
There were no booksellers or librarians singing "Happy Birthday" when the USA Patriot Act celebrated its first anniversary on October 26. Concern about the potential chilling effect on free speech of some of the provisions of the law has grown sharply over the last 12 months.
A year ago, we were all reeling from the shock of the World Trade Center attack. The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) was hit particularly hard because our office on Fulton Street is a few blocks from where the World Trade Center stood. While none of us was hurt, we were unable to return to Fulton Street for over a month. In the meantime, we worked from my home in Brooklyn where we attempted to do what we could to save Banned Books Week, which was in danger of being forgotten entirely.
Of course, we were aware that the Bush administration had introduced legislation giving the government expanded authority to fight terrorism. We heard that its title was an acronym "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism." But we didn't know what it contained until it was too late to protest.
Not too many people in Congress knew much about it either. It was a long and complex bill. Nevertheless, the Senate approved it without hearings and without a "markup" session, where changes are normally considered. There were some changes at a markup in the House, but the administration refused to accept them and accused House members of jeopardizing national security. The House leadership endorsed virtually the same bill that had passed the Senate. In the end, only one Senator, Russell Feingold of Wisconsin, and 66 members of the House voted against the Patriot Act. The bill became law in just six weeks, nearly record time.
