Restructuring the University of Vermont Libraries: Challenges, Opportunities, and Change
Rebecca R. Martin Challenges and opportunities for academic libraries in this transition area include:
  • an increasing emphasis on networked access to information resources, within the broader context of the emerging virtual library; an expanding role for library faculty and staff in teaching users how to identify, select, evaluate, and retrieve information resources relevant to their needs; an enhanced capacity for the library to create, organize, and disseminate select sets of electronic information (e.g., gateways to Internet resources); ongoing development of core collections to support university curricular programs and research needs within the constraints of publication proliferation and price inflation; a growing responsibility, in alliance with the computing center, to provide a network infrastructure to support academic programs; a continuing reassessment of services that may be strengthened or diminished according to changing user needs, or streamlined or consolidated to improve organizational productivity; a flexible faculty and staff, developing new skills throughout their careers.

In Vermont: libraries, street repairs, 'no' to Iraq war
Pat Morrison, NCR contributor V
ermonters have a well-deserved reputation for being fiercely independent and liberal. One tradition that validates that opinion is the annual winter exercise of civic duty known as Town Meeting, Vermont's almost universal form of government. In the local patois, it's not referred to as " the town meeting," but simply "Town Meeting," the uppercase letters proclaiming the event's importance. Everybody who's a registered resident even minimally concerned about local and state government turns out for Town Meeting, and not even a nasty Nor'easter dumping double-digit snowfall can deter the hardy locals. This, after all, is Vermont. Town Meeting is an all-day affair and ever-practical Vermonters come prepared: Women bring their knitting and crocheting; moms tote babies in car seats and bags of toys to keep older siblings occupied during the hours of discussion and voting. Participants take a break at noon for potlucks, where almost everyone brings something, from stew or soup that's been simmering in a crock pot since the school or town hall opened, to home-baked pies. Much of Vermont's feistiness can be traced to the state's scrappy father figure, Ethan Allen, the Revolutionary War hero who commanded the highly irregular forces called "the Green Mountain Boys." Less well known outside New England is that Allen spent a significant chunk of his life trying to achieve independence for Vermont from the young United States of America! In fact, for a short but storied 14 years there was an actual Independent Republic of Vermont (Jan. 15, 1777-March 4, 1791). Testimony to some citizens' quest for such renewed autonomy is the Web site

Stowe Free Library Stowe, Vermont From the book "Where The Books Are" Written by Patricia W. Belding, Potash Book Publishing
The Stowe Free Library, occupying the first floor of a former school built in 1861, is located a block east of Main Street (VT Route 100). It shares the tastefully-restored Helen Day memorial library and art Center building. The original architecture of the $5,000 Late Greek Revival school has been retained in the wide verandah with fluted Doric columns, the handsome balcony, the large windows, and the elaborate belfry. In 1828, over 150 years before the book collection was moved to its present location, Stowe's literary history began with a subscription library, followed in 1863 by an agricultural one. In May 1866, still another library was started when summer visitors donated 51 books and townspeople voted $100 to increase the collection. Warren I. Atkins, who kept the books in his grocery store, may have been the first librarian. George W. Jenney and his wife took over in 1870, operating the library out of their store until 1904 when the books were moved into the Akeley memorial building, still standing on Main Street. Colonial Revival in style and built of red brick with Barre granite trim, the latter is interesting as an ex-library. Dedicated to Stowe soldiers on August 19, 1903, it was the gift of Healey Cady Akeley, a native of Stowe who prospered in the lumber business out West. The library, sharing the building at first with the post office, two lock-up cells, and town offices, remained there until 1981.
