University of Vermont
DESCRIPTION:

The University of Vermont has one of the largest Geography departments in New England, also one of the few graduate schools of geography in the region. The Department of Geography was established in 1966 and currently has eight faculty and forty-five undergraduate majors. The first Master's degrees were conferred in 1970 and typically there are eight to ten graduate students enrolled.
Undergraduate students who take Geography at UVM can choose from a wide range of courses, many of which will take them around the world. For example, students could sign up for regional geography courses on Canada, Vermont, Africa, or the USA. Other introductory offerings include courses on the geography of race and ethnicity, "geotechniques," and our ever-popular introductory classes in world regional geography and world natural environments. Intermediate-level classes include political geography, cultural ecology, geography and gender, international development and political ecology, urban geography, and intermediate courses in GIS and remote sensing. At the advanced level, we offer classes that include spatial analysis, research methods, climate and hazards, and global economic restructuring.
Specialized facilities for the study of geography at UVM include remote sensing/GIS and cartography labs in the department. The University has an excellent library with over one million books and periodicals. The library also contains a collection of about 150,000 maps and atlases as well as being a regional depository for government documents. The commitment to an Area Studies focus in our department is strengthened by close ties to the International Studies and Canadian Studies Programs at UVM. Similarly, we regularly cross-list courses and work in concert with a number of other departments at UVM, including the Environmental Program, Women's Studies, Political Science, Geology, Anthropology, and Natural Resources.

by Ruth Hoogenboom, Harwood Union Middle School
Introduction At Harwood Union Middle School there is a significant geography unit accompanying a basic Early World History course for seventh graders. After surveying my students in 2000, I decided to teach the geography component first for a couple of reasons. First, most of my students came to me thinking geography meant memorizing states, countries, and capitols. Secondly, and much more important, I felt that by providing students with knowledge of land forms and climates of the world at the beginning of the course, it would give us a great arena to compare and contrast different groups of people around the world as they developed their cultures. An example of this might be to discuss why many early cultures seemed to develop in river valleys and to decide if these particular river valleys had any similarities to each other. To achieve this effectively, I felt I needed a geography piece solidly in place before embarking on the rest of the course.

Vermont is boardered on the east by New Hampshire, which has no Federally Recognized Indian Tribes.
Vermont is boardered on the south by Massachussetts, which has one Federally Recognized Indian Tribe, located on the western end of Martha's Vinyard, the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah).
Vermont is boardered in the west by New York, which has nine Federally Recognized Indian Tribes. The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe (Akwesasne) is near Vermont, but the rest of the reservations are in central and western New York, about as remote to Vermont as Martha's Vinyard. "Although Vermont does not have any Indian land, we lose tax revenues from sales made from Indian lands near our borders. It would be extremely unfortunate if the problem were allowed to grow. I will be pleased to lend my support to this bill." Gov. Howard Dean (D-VT) to Rep. Ernest J. Istook Jr. (R-OK), June 1997, supporting a bill aimed at limiting the ability of Indian tribes' businesses to escape some state and local taxes. To which Indian lands was Howard refering? How much sales tax revenues has Vermont lost to the Mohawks and the Wampanoags? I know the Wampanoags sell tee-shirts, polos and coffee cups all with the Tribe's seal. Maybe the Mohawks sell roadmaps.

CHAPTER 6
THE BYPASSED EAST
A map of America's eastern seaboard reveals a lack of large cities along the coast north of Boston. Few major overland routes extend inland from this coast, and interior cities are generally smaller than those along the ocean. This area, comprising northern New England and the Adirondacks of New York, can be referred to as the Bypassed East ( Map 5 The Bypassed East is near, even astride, major routeways, but not on them. Ocean transportation can easily bypass the region, putting it in a transportation shadow that has produced slow regional economic growth and even stagnation. Southern New England is a part of metropolitan America. Northern New England, for the most part, is not. It is much more like Canada's Atlantic Provinces. THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT Much of the Bypassed East is beautiful. The Presidential Range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire contains some of the most rugged topography in the eastern United States. The extensive shoreline thrusts out into the Atlantic and meets the ocean's waves with a heavily indented coast that mixes dramatic headlands with many small coves bordered by rocky beaches. Large empty areas, almost totally lacking in settlement, are only hours away from some of the largest cities on the continent. Most of the Bypassed East is a part of the northeastern extension of the Appalachian Uplands. However, the structure of the area bears little surface resemblance to the clearly delineated ridge and valley system of the southern Appalachians.

The economy is dominated by state government and insurance industries. It is also a trading center in a lumber, granite, and winter resort area. Granite is processed, and there is light manufacturing. Vermont College of Norwich Univ., New England Culinary Institute, and the state historical society are there. The city has maintained a 19th-century charm; of interest are the state capitol and federal courthouse. It is the birthplace of Admiral George Dewey . Surrounded by mountains, Montpelier has an excellent view of Mt. Mansfield, the highest point in the state.

    J. Denison. "A Map of the States of New Hampshire and Vermont." An excellent late eighteenth century map of New Hampshire and Vermont. This map was from Jedidiah Morse's geography, one of the first American publications of its kind. Morse, the father of Samuel F.B. Morse, established himself in the 1780's as one of the leading producers of American maps. No boundary appears between New Hampshire and Maine. Five counties can be seen in New Hampshire and eleven in Vermont.
Mathew Carey. "Vermont, from actual Survey."
From American Pocket Atlas An early nineteenth century map of Vermont from Carey's American Pocket Atlas . This is the second state of one of the very early American maps of Vermont; the first state was issued by Mathew Carey in 1796. Unlike many other cartographers of the day, Carey updated his maps in subsequent versions, and this 1801 example from the Pocket Atlas is a good example of this. In 1796 either Carey did not have information on the roads, or he thought it not important. However, by 1801, this had changed and Carey added clear delineations of the roads in the state. He also depicted other new information, including additional hills, lakes, and counties.
