Introduction to Vermont - The United States of America " I f there is one word that describes Vermont and its inhabitants, it is "independent". Vermonters have retained that independence by fighting off claims to their territory by neighboring states. The heroics of Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys kept their neighbors at bay, and by 1777 Vermont had drawn up its own constitution as a free and independent state. Robert R. Churchill, 1946-2004
To the Middlebury College Community I write with the sad news of the passing of our colleague Robert R. Churchill, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Geography.
Bob joined the faculty in 1978, when he was hired as Instructor in Geography. Even before he was tenured in 1986, he was the major force behind the shaping of a department that had been in danger of elimination in the early 1980s. In his long tenure as Chair of the Geography Department, he built a strong faculty and a curriculum known for its rigorous standards and substantial contributions to several of the College’s interdisciplinary programs. He established the College’s program in geographic information systems (GIS), which now not only supports the geography curriculum, but also the environmental studies program and other academic programs on campus. In fact, GIS at Middlebury, and geography as well, is viewed by many in the profession as the gold standard for liberal arts colleges, thanks, in large part, to Bob’s leadership and vision.
Bob was one of the most gifted teachers on the Middlebury faculty, able to teach with great effectiveness courses in both physical and human geography, in lecture, lab, or seminar format, and to geography majors or non-majors. Although one of the most rigorous and demanding of professors, he was also among the most admired and appreciated by his students.

College mourns loss of "father of Geography"
By Andrea Gissing Published: Thursday, November 18, 2004 The death of geographer Robert Churchill has saddened the community.
Robert R. Churchill, the William R. Kenan, Jr. professor of Geography, passed away Sunday, Nov. 14, succumbing to a two-year fight against cancer. He was 57 years old. Churchill is survived by his wife of 25 years, Kimberly Jones, his daughter Rachel Jones (16) and his son Callahan Churchill (12). A celebration for Churchill's life will be held Monday, Dec. 6 at 4 p.m. at Mead Chapel.
Churchill is considered the "father of modern geography at Middlebury College," having revived the department - despite the College's intention to get rid of the program - after joining the faculty in 1978. Trained as a physical geographer, he learned geographical information systems (GIS) and cartography on his own, and subsequently built up Middlebury's GIS and cartography programs to what they are today, a model for all liberal arts schools. "He was instrumental in making the geography department the way it is," said Professor of Geography Tamar Mayer.
