WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO………?
Many Geography alumni have written, asking “what ever happened to…?”
The following update on full-time faculty and long-time part-time faculty who have taught or are teaching
in the Department of Geography at SUNY New Paltz
has been assembled from publicly available sources, such as websites,
in an effort to help answer “what ever happened to….?”

George Schnell
, the founder of the college’s Department of Geography and ID-PLUS, served a quarter century as the Department’s first chair. At SUNY New Paltz, he initiated the Geography Internship Program , which most majors participated in over three decades, and taught Physical Geography Problems of Population , and Geography for Teachers , among other courses. Although George “retired” in 1999, he continues to teach one graduate course each semester—alternating Problems of Population , and Geography for Teachers —while writing and publishing about Pennsylvania. His major concern at the moment is staying out of the kitchen—except during mealtimes. Email: GeorgeSchnell@msn.com

The Geography of Buying a MINI
MF Staff / August 19, 2003
With MINI dealers only located in the largest cities around the US there are many of us out there that are having to travel far and wide to find a dealer. This story comes from Business First Since dealerships began selling the new Minis in the United States in March 2002, estimated annual U.S. sales have continued to increase, according to figures from Paul Taylor, chief economist with the National Automobile Dealers Association. Since the latter part of last year, the Cincinnati dealership has been selling between 30 and 40 Minis a month, said Bruce Mackey, marketing manager for the Mini Store of Cincinnati. Choudhury estimates that 35 percent to 45 percent of his business comes from Louisville and Lexington. To sell the Mini, dealerships had to agree to provide separate floors or showrooms for the Minis that would be independent of their BMW dealerships, McHale said. "We went to 300-plus BMW dealers and told them what we planned to do and what the investment was for a Mini dealership," he said. "Of that 300, two-thirds said they were interested in selling it. From that, we whittled it down to 75 dealerships."

Some Vermont Geography
Vermont's borders lie about 54 miles from Montreal, Canada ; 200 miles from Boston, Massachusetts; and 293 from New York City. The Green Mountain State covers some 9609 square miles. The highest point is 4393 feet (1339 m), atop towering Mount Mansfield . The lowest points are along glistening Lake Champlain , elevation 95 feet (29 m). Most of the land in between was shaped by glacial activity some 10,000 to 12,000 years ago.
The capital of Vermont is situated in the city of Montpelier, in Central Vermont . The founding mothers and fathers situated the capital near the geographic center of the state to make it easier for Vermonters to travel to the seat of government and avail themselves of the central services provided there. Until recently, the only way a Vermonter can get a drivers license with their photo on it was to drive to Montpelier. There are now state offices of the DMV located in each county (and sometimes in a number of towns/cities in those counties) that offer that service. The largest city remains Burlington - often called the Queen City of Vermont ( Burlington, Vermont population 38,392

VT In 1609, French explorer Samuel de Champlain came upon a large lake in the area we know today as Vermont and named it after himself. The state's name comes from two French words vert (green) and mont (mountain). In 1791, Vermont was the 14th state to join the Union. Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys defended their homeland from the British during the Revolutionary War. Vermont is famous for the scenic Green Mountains which run the entire length of the state. Although manufacturing and a growing service industry sector are now the most important economic activities in the state, Vermont has one of the lowest percentages of city dwellers of any state. Many vacationers go to Vermont just for the beautiful scenery. In the fall, the state is ablaze with the flaming colors of turning leaves. Vermont's quiet towns and villages are also favorite scenes. The mountains, lakes and streams offer a variety of recreational activities from skiing in the winter to hiking and camping in the summer. GOVERNMENT
