Code Enforcement Recommendations
On Monday of this week, Consultant Jeff Kronschnabl presented to me and to the City Council the results of his Code Enforcement study. I believe that the City can benefit significantly from his experienced perspective and this fresh view from beyond our community.
University-City Police Agreement
In August, the City and UVM signed an agreement providing for joint patrols to address off-campus student behavior. These patrols are now actively focusing on problem streets on high-activity nights.
Mayors Lobby for Homeland Security
In late September I joined more than 50 mayors from around the country in Washington, D.C. to lobby Congress regarding proposed homeland security legislation. We urged Congressional leaders to provide funding directly to cities and to provide greater flexibility in the use of funding to prevent terrorism and increase preparedness. The mayors were also united in their support of housing-trust-fund legislation introduced by Congressman Sanders.

Teams from More Than Fifty Colleges and Universities Selected to Attend Institutes on General Education Reform and Campus Leadership for Student Engagement, Inclusion, and Achievement
"A tremendous amount of creative effort goes into each campus's planning for general education reform," said Andrea Leskes, director of the Institute on General Education. "The institute provides campus teams with experienced consultants to advise and inspire them, along with time for reflection and collaboration in a beautiful setting." Greater Expectations report. Teams at the institute will confer with expert faculty; explore issues of engagement, inclusion, and high achievement; learn from the projects of other teams; and develop their own plans for concrete departmental, divisional, or campus-wide action. "We are very excited about the range of projects that campus teams will develop at this year's institute and the diverse expertise represented in the faculty that will consult with them," said Alma Clayton-Pedersen, director of the Greater Expectations Institute. "We are eager to continue work begun at the 2004 institute to help campus teams 'make excellence inclusive' by linking their diversity and inclusion efforts with their academic quality and assessment initiatives."
