News Releases NEA Study Reveals Teacher Salaries Stagnant for Last Decade The report, Research shows that the quality of a child's teacher is a key factor in closing the achievement gaps that exist today and ensuring that all students are prepared for success in work and life. Yet according to NEA's study, the average salary of a public school teacher for the 2003-2004 school year increased only slightly over the previous year. C-11 C-14 Speaking on behalf of NEA's 2.7 million educators, President Reg Weaver emphasized that inadequate state and local funding of public schools and the strict, costly regulations of the so-called "No Child Left Behind" law are making it more difficult for schools to retain quality employees. "A career in teaching offers many intrinsic rewards. But teachers should never have to choose between doing what they love and supporting their families," Weaver said. "We can't continue to ask them to fulfill such an important mission without providing the support they deserve and need to remain in the profession." Nationwide, at least 2 million teachers will be needed over the next decade because of teacher attrition and retirement and increased student enrollment. Research shows that more than one third of all new teachers leave the profession within three years and almost one half leave within five years due to poor working conditions and low salaries. The percentages are even higher for minority teachers, male teachers, and teachers under 30.

Skip Main Content Area The Center is located in the Nolin House, 589 Main Street In its thirty years of existence, the Center for Research on Vermont has established itself as the clearinghouse for Vermont-related research. As an interdisciplinary network of scholars, the Center serves a number of constituencies, including state government, public schools, institutions of higher education, museums, and cultural and social agencies, and the general public. (The Center was officially launched in March 1975 with the opening of a public conference, "Focus: Vermont." Papers from this conference were edited by the late University of Vermont Professor of Theatre George B. Bryan and published under the title, "Focus: Vermont 1975 , the Center's first publication.) The Center's Research-in-Progress Seminar Series and refereed publications program offer a continuing forum for scholarly discourse on Vermont. In addition, the Center provides reference services on Vermont research to its members, educators in a variety of settings, students, government representatives, the media, and the public. The Center for Research on Vermont coordinates the Vermont Studies program, an interdisciplinary minor in the College of Arts and Sciences, in cooperation with other departments that offer Vermont-related courses. State Department of Education Requirements Although all states must comply with the federal provision of No Child Left Behind, many states have programs for mid-career changers individuals who already have a bachelor's degree—that are alternatives to the traditional route to teacher certification. Just as teacher certification requirements differ from state to state, so do alternative certification program offerings. In the State Departments of Education directory, RNT provides resources developed by the National Center for Alternative Certification: a coded list of alternative certification programs offered in each state, and an alternative licensure key that describes details about the types of programs offered by each state. US State Government Aid The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for most state loan, grant and scholarship programs, in addition to the federal loans and grants. When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they forward the information on the form to the state student assistance agency. Each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline. If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines, other than Michigan. If you miss the deadline, you will be ineligible to receive state aid for the entire academic year. Procedures for applying for state prepaid tuition programs and the national guard differ from state to state. The amount of information provided on the state web sites varies from state to states. Some states provide comprehensive information about residency requirements , loan, grant, scholarship and prepaid tuition programs and other state aid programs. Others provide minimal information. Guarantee Agencies Federal student loans are extremely low risk loans, as compared with other types of unsecured loans, in part because the Federal government guarantees them against default. This section of FinAid provides information about student loan guarantee agencies, also referred to as student loan guarantors and student loan guaranty agencies. Guarantee agencies insure student loans against default. The 1% guarantee fee that is collected from each disbursement is paid to the designated guarantee agency to cover the costs of insuring the loan. (Some guarantee agencies have built up enough of a reserve that they are able to waive or reduce the guarantee fee.) Welcome to the Association of Vermont Recyclers About the Association of Vermont Recyclers The Association of Vermont Recyclers (AVR), founded in 1982, is best known for its educational theater programs and its in-class presentations on recycling and other environmental topics. But did you know that AVR is much more? During its twenty-plus year existence, AVR has been a leader in shaping and defining Vermont's recycling efforts and goals. The focus of AVR Education and School Technical Assistance Programs AVR currently offers 10 theater shows and 5 active workshops , addressing environmental concepts and ethics of sustainability. Our services are essential in this rural state, where small town tax bases prohibit specialized programming. AVR programs also help towns satisfy the educational component of their solid waste plans. Some of our projects are described below: AVR works with teens to support a statewide network of environmental clubs to form the Youth Environmental Coalition (YEC) AVR created and continues to offer the Vermont Youth Environmental Summit (YES) . AVR works with about 20 high school students statewide to plan this one-day conference for Vermont high school students. The Summit provides the students a structured educational conference that highlights many environmental topics and issues. AVR also leads the Healthy Homes Clean Waters initiative in Vermont. The goal of the program is to educate Vermonters about the dangers of some common household cleaners and chemicals and to offer them inexpensive and useful alternatives. Through educational exhibits and workshops, AVR helps individuals make the connection between the use of toxic household products and the contamination of our waters.
