In 1984, she first started teaching her fourth graders about Japanese culture. In 1987, Corologos was accepted in the Japan Study Tour offered by the Five College Center for East Asian Studies in Amherst, MA funded by the United States-Japan Foundation. As her follow-up project, she created a handbook on teaching Japanese culture to Vermont schoolchildren, which was widely distributed to Vermont schools. Corologos continued each year to focus on teaching Japanese culture in her classroom by inviting college students from Japan and other Japanese people to her class, by involving the school's art and music teachers in the culture study, and by organizing and supporting school wide studies about Japan in her school. In various years her students have danced, sung, or exhibited at the statewide Japan-America Society's Matsuri event (Vermont chapter). As one of the recipients of the University of Vermont's Outstanding Vermont Teacher Award in 1987, Corologos has become an informal resource to other schools, and gladly shares the resources she has accumulated. In 1999, Corologos was accepted into the University of Vermont's Asian Studies Outreach Project (ASOP), and has participated in many of its offerings. Through ASOP, Corologos has mentored a Japanese intern in her classroom, attended and presented at Japanese culture workshops, and assisted as a co-leader for ASOP's Institute in Japan. In June 2004, Corologos will lead that Institute for Vermont teachers.

environmentally sustainable. While the entire planet faces this challenge, European nations have experimented most aggressively and made the most progress toward creating sustainable cities. A study tour has been established to visit Denmark, England, Germany, Sweden and The Netherlands to observe sustainable technologies and practices. Participants will see innovative housing arrangements, auto-free communities, alternative energy systems, prototype "ecovillages," creative waste treatment and utilization, and other efforts to make urban settlements compatible with nature. Students will consider the social, economic and political aspects of these efforts, as well as the technical issues. The program will be of value to students in civil engineering, environmental studies, landscape architecture, public policy, social geography, and urban design and planning. The group will depart for London June 18 and return from Sweden July 2. Travel will be primarily by train, and the students will stay in each of several cities a few days with side trips to other locations. Students will earn three hours of pass/fail field-study credit that can be taken for geography, interdisciplinary studies, political science, or urban affairs and planning credit.

Child Care as Economic Development
The early childhood care and education field is at an exciting moment. Across the US, there is increasing recognition of the economic importance of child care. Early care and education is being recognized as an important economic sector in its own right, and as a critical piece of social infrastructure that supports children's development and facilitates parents' employment. The Linking Economic Development and Child Care Research Project aims to better identify the economic linkages of child care from a regional economy perspective. We support states and localities interested in using an economic development framework to build coalitions with the economic development community, business interests and policy makers to help craft new approaches to child care finance. This site provides a quantitative database of economic demographic and policy data for all 50 states and a qualitative database of all state and local studies (completed and in-progress). The site also includes research reports, copies of state studies, advice on economic analysis, and profiles of new approaches to child care policy.

Why Universal Health Care is a Terrible Idea for Vermont By Brian Brown, Editor,
http://www.iburlington.com
If there were a question on this week's ballot asking, "Shall the voters call upon the Vermont government to buy everyone a new car and do it for free?...Yes or No, I would wager that most people would vote Yes. Who wouldn't want a new car if it didn't cost them anything? What if the new car was a Yugo? Remember those? They were crappy cars from Yugoslavia that were all the rage for about a week until they rusted out... "Wait," you say, "This isn't exactly a 'new' car." "Sure it is," says the government. "We've been storing these in a big factory since they were manufactured. They are absolutely new!" "Well," you say, "That's not what I meant when I checked yes." "That's what you're getting," says the government who then turns its back on you and walks to the office, leaving you alone in the car lot with the keys to a brand new car. Oh, by the way, it wasn't really free either. The government actually made the company you work for pay for it, and the price of the car is going to come out of your salary for the next ten years. Welcome to Universal Health Care as proposed by former Lt. Gubernatorial candidate Cheryl Rivers and

Montpelier, Vermont Community Energy System: First Step Project Development
Summary of the Feb. 2004 report by BERC for the USDA Forest Service "Community energy" is a system that distributes energy from one or more central plants to various users in a community. Generally this approach uses district heating , in which heat is carried from a central plant through underground pipes to users in neighboring buildings. A large community-energy plant can also generate electricity and cooling. District Energy St. Paul, the largest U.S. system, uses a variety of low-grade wood wastes to both heat and cool all the city's downtown buildings, and some residential neighborhoods. In Montpelier, Vermont's small capital city, there has been discussion since the early 1990s of expanding an existing wood-chip-fired district energy system, which now serves state buildings in the capital, to heat private and city buildings downtown as well.

Regions of Mind History, U.S. regionalism, foreign policy, life. Vermont as Hell H Geitner Simmons email link (I've added two updates.) Part of the ritual for the presidential campaign season is for right-wing media to trash the state that the Democratic nominee is from and for left-wing media to do the same in regard to the GOP nominee well, at least when a governor is nominated. (The reputation of Bill Clinton's Arkansas came in for a real drubbing in 1992; the same applied to George W. Bush's Texas in 2000.) Sometimes the process begins long before a nominee is even selected. The cover story for the current National Review shows an idyllic pastoral scene from Vermont with a bold red headline superimposed on the image. The headline: Hell Jonah Goldberg wrote the piece, titled "The 'Flatlanders' and Their King," and he pulled out some very long knives in zestfully carving up Howard Dean's Vermont. A few excerpts: "The Flatlander invasion represents perhaps the most complete case of internal American colonialism since the destruction of the Indian," says Hal Goldman, a historian and lawyer who's studied and worked in Vermont. "Hundreds of thousands of highly educated, well-off people invaded a state with a unique culture and history. They seized control of its resources and institutions, demeaned and destroyed the indigenous values of its people, altered the landscape, and drove many of the natives from their homes as a result of their activities. If this happened in Africa, the same people would call it colonialism. In Vermont, it's called liberal chic. The colonists are arrogant, disrespectful, and hypocritcal. And Howard Dean is their king." ...
