Private vs. Public Schools: What's the Difference?
(Page 1 of 3) Your goal is to find a school that will meet your child's needs. But how do you choose between a public school and a private school? By Victoria Thorp and Jesse James, GreatSchools.net Staff
Cost
Public schools cannot charge tuition. They are funded through federal, state and local taxes. When you pay your taxes, you are paying for your child's education and the education of other children in your community. Private schools cost money. Private schools do not receive tax revenues, but instead are funded through tuition, fundraising, donations and private grants. According to the National Association of Independent Schools, the median tuition for private day schools in the United States is close to $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $13,000 for grades 6 to 8 and $15,000 for grades 9 to 12. The median tuition for boarding schools is $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $27,000 for grades 6 to 9, and $28,000 for grades 9 to 12. Parochial schools generally charge somewhat less.

Krishna temples urge victims of abuse to make formal claim
Sunday, May 04, 2003 - 05:14 pm
By Larry B. Stammer, Los Angeles Times, 4/30/2003
LOS ANGELES - The six Hare Krishna temples in California, along with several other Krishna organizations here and in West Virginia, took steps yesterday to identify minors who may have been sexually abused or mistreated at boarding schools during the 1970s and '80s.
A lawsuit over the alleged abuse prompted the Krishna movement, known officially as the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, to file for bankruptcy last year to protect its assets and, the group said, to prevent closing of temples and other facilities across the United States.
As part of the bankruptcy process, the Krishna temples plan to publish legal notices today in major newspapers and magazines and on websites, urging victims to make claims if they want to be compensated under a proposed bankruptcy reorganization plan.
The move is the latest development in a three-year legal battle over the abuse allegations.
In charges that echo the sexual-abuse scandal in Roman Catholic dioceses across the United States, plaintiffs allege they were raped or otherwise physically and emotionally abused while living in Krishna boarding schools away from their parents.

Boarding schools confront new hurdles: Mom and dad
Wednesday, July 06, 2005 By Suein Hwang, The Wall Street Journal
Boarding school was a family tradition for Clay Gibson. As a teen, he followed his brother, uncle and great uncle to Baylor School, a 112-year-old private school in Chattanooga, Tenn., whose 670 acres overlook the Tennessee River. Thirty years later and now an Atlanta law-firm partner, Mr. Gibson is a Baylor trustee and easily lists the elite school's many attractions. But when time came to send his three children to high school, Mr. Gibson broke with tradition: He sent his two sons and daughter to a private day school. He loves Baylor, he says, but he and his wife never seriously considered it. "We're very involved in our kids' education and life, and we wanted to stay involved on a day-to-day basis," Mr. Gibson says. "We wanted them to stay in our home and enjoy that opportunity." Mr. Gibson's decision is part of broader shift plaguing schools like Baylor: While enrollment at private day schools is booming, boarding schools are seeing little or no growth. Boarding-school enrollment stands at 39,000 for the 2004-2005 school year, and has barely budged in five years, says the National Association of Independent Schools. That's down from about 42,000 in the late 1960s, estimate some boarding-school veterans. (The association doesn't have historic figures.) Enrollment grew 2.7 percent over the past 10 years, versus 15 percent for private day schools.

Professor Profile: Jamie Williamson
By Emily Moran Published: Tuesday, November 18, 2003 UVM professor, Jamie Williamson's book-filled office is arranged quite awkwardly and it is possible that his desk can be placed somewhere other than smack in the middle of the room. It sits at an obscure angle and looks as if it was just thrown down by movers of large objects.
There is actually another smaller desk-type piece of furniture that is pushed up against the right side of the larger desk, creating a sort of L-shaped surface if you were to view it from above. Beside it is a rolly office chair, which Professor Williamson speaks from with his soft, friendly voice.
When asked to state his full name, he playfully responds in a tone that mocks the officiality of the question, "James Thomas Williamson", as he laughs at this obvious false properness. This sense of humor is somewhat expected because of his somewhat goofy appearance.
It wouldn't be called a mullet, but his thin scraggly hair does show a slight resemblance to that stuff you pull out of pillows when they're really old and you can tell that they have been someone's sidekick for years. His is relatively long, for a man of 44 years, frizzing to an end slightly below the full length of his narrow face. On the top, there is less of it, hence the mention of a mullet. He wears glasses with thin frames, which cover a large surface area of his upper face.

he importance of developing strong bodies as well as sound minds is one of the school's abiding principles. Afternoon athletics is a long-standing tradition in boarding schools, and a requirement at Saint Thomas More School. Each student must participate in a program of physical fitness and training during the athletic period.
We make a strong attempt to insure each student receives the opportunity to compete on our interscholastic teams. Some opt for intramural activities or individual sports, such as weight-training and swimming.
At all levels, emphasis is placed on the development of good sportsmanship, competitiveness, self-discipline and confidence. Each student's athletic experience is designed to provide him with a chance to engage in satisfying athletic challenges, as well as to provide a counterbalance to academic pressures.
St. Thomas More School competes with other prestigious New England prep schools as a member of the Southeastern New England Athletic Conference (SENE) division of the New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC).

College Counseling in Independent Schools. Highlights: An ERIC/CAPS Digest.
The number of students in independent schools today makes up scarcely ten percent of the nation's high school population. Nonetheless, these students comprise a significant minority because they tend to be highly motivated, intelligent, and in many cases able to pay the high costs of attending the nation's colleges and universities. Very often independent school students aspire to attend selective colleges, and their presence in freshman classes averages about thirty percent, a number which considerably exceeds their percentage in the national pool of college-bound high school students. Independent school students are exposed to a rigorous high school curriculum which prepares them well for the challenges of the college classroom. They are, moreover, encouraged to take part in a variety of extracurricular activities at their schools and to develop an appreciation for a shared core of community values. They are also urged to develop leadership skills which will eventually enable them to play dynamic and useful roles in our society as adults. Most independent schools are deeply committed to providing an education which is noted for its quality as well as the diversity of its student body. The charter of Phillips Exeter Academy, for instance, enjoins the school to seek "youth from every quarter," so that it may adequately instruct them in the "great and real business of living." In recent years the quest for diversity has led to the inclusion of a number of minority and disadvantaged students in independent schools. Alumni support and endowment funds have enabled many schools to assemble diverse student bodies which are similar in percentages to that of many colleges.
