Venezuela: Introduction
Background: Venezuela was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Ecuador). For most of the first half of the 20th century, Venezuela was ruled by generally benevolent military strongmen, who promoted the oil industry and allowed for some social reforms. Democratically elected governments have held sway since 1959. Current concerns include: drug-related conflicts along the Colombian border, increasing internal drug consumption, overdependence on the petroleum industry with its price fluctuations, and irresponsible mining operations which are endangering the rain forest and indigenous peoples.

Contents of Curriculum Unit 80.01.02:
To Guide Entry
I. Objectives
Latin-American literature has been overlooked in the schools by English-speaking readers much too often, even though it has much to offer. In fact, there is an amazing lack of interest in anything that is Latin-American. It is ironic, but most Americans do not know that Puerto Ricans are American citizens. When they visit Puerto Rico, they believe that they are visiting a foreign country. The influx of Puerto Ricans and other Latin-Americans into the United States mainland has made us more aware of their language. For this reason, one finds that there are many more students enrolled in Spanish courses. Many students want to learn Spanish because they want to understand and communicate with their friends. The high school Spanish curriculum has been geared towards Spain and its literature. It is now time to include in our curriculum Latin-America and its literature. Not only should we include them because of the obvious reason that there are more Latin-Americans than there are Spaniards, but also because there is more innovation and style coming out of Latin-America presently. Latin-American literature encompasses all the literary works from Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Antilles. This unit will attempt to serve as a guide for teachers introducing students to Latin-American literary works. It should be taught to third or fourth year students who are highly motivated or to native Spanish speakers. The teacher needs at least six to eight weeks to teach this unit.

47. Venezuela - Introduction
Pictures and text introduce the geography, history, culture, food, and businesses that make up the unique nation that's home to the world's highest waterfall.
http://www.geographia.com/venezuela/
VENEZUELA
Introduction T
he Republic of Venezuela is the sixth largest country in South America, but in variation its landscape rivals that of the much larger countries like Brazil and Argentina. In fact, comparing its geography really doesn't do it justice: the country is simply unique. Anyone who has ever seen a tepuis rising above Venezuela's Gran Sabana can testify that there's nothing really like it, anywhere.
Venezuela lies at the northern extreme of South America, bordered by Colombia to the West, Brazil to the South, Guyana to the East, and the Caribbean Sea to the North. In all, the country is just over 900,000 square kilometers and divided into 23 states. Its borders seem to hold all of South America in miniature: there are fine stretches of the Andes, huge areas of Amazonian rain forests, fertile plains known as llanos, miles of Caribbean shoreline, and even a small desert. The nation also has a few geographical superlatives, including the world's highest waterfall and South America's biggest lake.
Venezuela is as much a Caribbean country as it is a South American one. Parts of its shoreline could easily be mistaken for that of some paradisiacal Caribbean island, and at night the discos in Caracas come alive with rhythms from all over the Caribbean. If you looked under the earth, you might easily mistake Venezuela for an oil-rich Arabian country. The oil reserves are so vast, in fact, that from time to time engineers and surveyors drill in the wrong place by mistake, miles away from where they think they should be, only to end up finding oil anyway.

    Geography
Venezuela Table of Contents Located at the northernmost end of South America, Venezuela has a total area of 912,050 square kilometers and a land area of 882,050 square kilometers, about twice the size of California. Shaped roughly like an inverted triangle, the country has a 2,800-kilometer coastline and is bounded on the north by the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, on the east by Guyana, on the south by Brazil, and on the west by Colombia. Most observers describe Venezuela in terms of four fairly well-defined regions: the Maracaibo lowlands in the northwest, the northern mountains extending in a broad east-west arc from the Colombian border along the Caribbean Sea, the wide Orinoco plains ( llanos) in central Venezuela, and the highly dissected Guiana highlands in the southeast. The Maracaibo lowlands form a large spoon-shaped oval bounded by mountains on three sides and open to the Caribbean on the north. The area is remarkably flat with only a gentle slope toward the center and away from the mountains that border the region. Lago de Maracaibo occupies much of the lower-lying territory. Areas around the southern part of Lago de Maracaibo are swampy, and, despite the rich agricultural land and significant petroleum deposits, the area was still thinly populated in 1990. The mountains bordering the Caribbean Sea are actually the northeasternmost extension of the Andes chain. Broken by several gaps, these high mountains have peaks over 4,500 meters; the fertile valleys between the ranges contain most of Venezuela's population, industry, and agriculture. The discontinuous westernmost range runs along the Colombian border and is the least densely populated part of this region. The ranges southeast of Lago de Maracaibo contain some of the highest peaks in the country (Pico Bolívar reaches 5,007 meters), a few of which are snowcapped year-round.

    Venezuela - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Imagine a beautiful place. This place is the most beautiful place you've ever seen. What do you see? Do you see pretty land? Lots of trees? What about animals? Are there animals in your beautiful place? Imagine there is a really long river, a huge lake, the tallest waterfall in the world, and the longest snake in the world in this beautiful place. The place you're imagining is Venezuela.
Venezuela is a beautiful country in South America. It is on South America's northern shore, between Brazil, Guyana, and Colombia. It has many different kinds of land. Venezuela has low, grassy plains and very high mountains. It is usually warm in Venezuela. This is because of Venezuela's location near the equator. The equator is an imaginary line all the way around the earth halfway between the north and south poles. Places near the equator are some of the hottest places on earth.
Do you like very high places? Many people are afraid of high places. Venezuela has the tallest waterfall in the world. It's known as Angel Falls. It is located deep in one of Venezuela's jungles. Angel Falls is named after the American who found the falls in 1937. His name was Jimmie Angel. He was a pilot who was looking for gold in the area. Instead, he found a waterfall that looked "a mile high" to him.
