The Swiss Guard Current profile While much of the work of the present day guards is ceremonial, they are responsible for the security at the Apostolic Palace, the papal apartment and the four main entrances to the Vatican. They are also in charge of the pontiff's physical safety when he travels outside the city state. The Swiss Guard, the world's smallest and perhaps most colorful army, has been the chief protectors of the pontiff. Clad in Renaissance helmets and blue, red and yellow tunics (the colors of the Medici family) that are said to have been designed by Michelangelo. For routine work, the guards wear blue uniforms and berets. The Swiss Guard currently consists of a total of 100 men: 4 officials, 1 chaplain, 23 noncommissioned officers, 70 halbardiers, and 2 drummers. The halbard is the traditional weapon carried by Swiss Guards. The members of the Swiss Guard reside in a barrack in Vatican City. They serve for two years, with the possibility of extending the period to a maximum of 25 years. During this period they receive training in self-defence, attend shooting practice, take course in Italian and study the organizational structure of the Vatican. At the end of the first year they must take a very thorough exam. Guard recruits must be Roman Catholic men of Swiss nationality who are single, under 30 years old and stand at least 5-feet, 8-inches tall. Guards need to have completed their initial military training in the Swiss Armed Forces, and obtained a certificate of good conduct from an ecclesiastical and a civil authority.

Pope Opposes Harry Potter Novels - Signed Letters from Cardinal Ratzinger Now Online RIMSTING, Germany, July 13, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) -  LifeSiteNews.com has obtained and made available online copies of two letters sent by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who was recently elected Pope, to a German critic of the Harry Potter novels.  In March 2003, a month after the English press throughout the world falsely proclaimed that Pope John Paul II approved of Harry Potter, the man who was to become his successor sent a letter to a Gabriele Kuby outlining his agreement with her opposition to J.K. Rowling's offerings.  (See below for links to scanned copies of the letters signed by Cardinal Ratzinger.) As the sixth issue of Rowling's Harry Potter series - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - is about to be released, the news that Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger expressed serious reservations about the novels is now finally being revealed to the English-speaking world still under the impression the Vatican approves the Potter novels.

Vatican City State
The capital of the Catholic church Take me to the pictures! (one photo in photo gallery) The Vatican City State was created in 1929 as a consequence of the Lateran Pact between the Italian Kingdom and the Catholic church, laying to rest a long standing conflict between the two. The Catholic church had had its own state since the early Middle Ages, the Papal state, which included most of the central parts on the Italian peninsula. This came to an end with the conquest and later annexation of the Papal state to the nascent Italian Kingdom in 1860. Only the city of Rome remained under the rule of the Pope, protected by a garrison of French troops. The young Italian Kingdom was not in a state to challenge France, so Rome was temporarily out of reach for the Italian Kingdom. The French-German war of 1870 caused the French to withdraw the garrison from Rome , and immediately afterwards the Italian army attacked and took the city, leaving the Pope as a self-declared "prisoner in the Vatican". The Pope refused to recognise the Italian Kingdom and forbade all catholics to participate in Italian politics, both as voters and as candidates, which had the unwanted effect of blocking the formation of a catholic party and hence reduced catholic influence in Italian politics. The conflict is usually referred to as the Roman Question This state of affairs persisted for 59 years, until the ratification of the Lateran Pact in 1929. With the Lateran Pact the dispute between the two parties were settled. As a part of the settlement, the Vatican City State was created as an independent and sovereign state. The Italian State also recognised Catholicism as its state religion, allowed the teaching of religion in public schools and agreed to support the church financially. The Holy See, on the other hand, formally recognised the sovereignty of

We worked with the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, to develop a state-of-the-art web site and Digital Library solution. This was a joint development project which included contributions from the State Hermitage Museum and many IBM locations, including Armonk, NY; IBM Research, Haifa, Israel; IBM Naples, Italy; IBM Russia, Moscow and St. Petersburg; IBM Software Solutions, Santa Teresa, CA; and IBM Research, Hawthorne and Yorktown, NY. The goal of this project was to capture images from the Hermitage collection for use with in-museum kiosks, for educational purposes, and over the web. The Hermitage web site shows one of the results of this partnership. This work was awarded Imaging Solution of 1999 in the category "Digital Photography and Still Image Databasing" by Advanced Imaging Magazine . The Vatican said it was the first "ecumenical theological consultation on the theme of indulgences" since the birth of Protestantism in the Reformation of the 16th and 17th centuries. The sale of indulgences by corrupt churchmen was one of the issues that Martin Luther protested in his theses of October 31, 1517, and which ultimately led to the Protestant breakaway from the Roman Catholic Church. Catholics have continued to believe that an indulgence—remission of temporal punishment for sins—can be gained through penitence and contrition, while Protestants reject the concept. The granting of indulgences was a key feature of last year's Holy Year observances by Roman Catholics.

Between now and the election of the next pope, National Catholic Reporter will provide additional photographs as they become available.
From one of the many hills within Rome, the dome of the Basilica of Saint Peter's can be seen overlooking the city. As one approaches the Vatican, the symbol emerges quickly, capturing the imagination of those traveling from different parts of the world. Tributes to John Paul II appear everywhere thanking the pontiff for his life and his love of people. As one walks through the city, posters appear outside buildings, inside stores, at bus stops, and under apartment windows. And for those making a pilgrimage to the city, the signs begin to tell a story of great meaning and importance for those who knew this man. But it is a story that goes far beyond John Paul II, reaching to every corner of the earth and, for this moment, unites its 1 billion members regardless of theological or political inclinations. It is a story of hope and a reminder of what could be for the world, its people and all of creation. It is a time of remembrance of not only John Paul II, but of everything his office represents for a religious tradition that has begun its third millennium within the world. It is a moment of silence. Crowds stand in reverence as they gather around the walls of Vatican City. There are no theological debates, there are no groups speaking their personal desires or individual longings. It is a time of unity for all present inside and outside the perimeter of Saint Peter's. Many stand, others sit, but all are members of one group that has come to see for themselves the meaning of these days.

Very Far Away from Vatican City
Taking in Sin City
W ith few exceptions, critics are fawning over the new film, Sin City , which is based on Frank Miller’s famed comics and which grabbed the number-one box-office spot in its opening week. As violent and stylized as anything in the film-noir canon, from which the film borrows heavily, Sin City has been described as so electrifying that it “kisses the blood right off its own violent hands” ( Chicago Tribune
This is not to say that Sin City has trouble filling the time or the screen. It overflows with spurting blood, decapitations, severed heads, dogs eating human bodies, cannibalism, and vomiting. It culminates in a decisive battle whose victor manages to rip the genitals off of his opponent and then smash his skull. (You might want to hold off on the nachos for this one.) The film is situated precariously between the two-dimensional, frame-by-frame world of comic books and a mobile world with flesh-and-blood actors. In this, it resembles last year’s Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow , which combined human actors, a computer-generated environment, and odd coloration. In this case, the color scheme is mostly black and white, with occasional flashes of bright red for female dresses, lipstick and blood, and blanched spots to demarcate blood spots and injuries.
