Convenor: Lissant Bolton What are the uses of anthropological or social science descriptions as understood by the subjects of ethnographic research? In what ways can these kinds of descriptions fit into people’s own projects, be made useful or useable? Should social scientists have this engaged focus? What other forms can description take, and how do they intersect with anthropological description. Can ethnographic writing be theorised as engagement.

Peace and Respect

Vanuatu (in Melanesia) is probably the most culturally diverse country anywhere. A unique network of fieldworkers is helping keep traditional customs alive and well.
Bosen Napu leads us in single file through the rainforest, and down the steep, winding path of a canyon, leaving the coast far behind us. It is best to walk barefoot, he says, for a better grip on the black, volcanic earth. When we finally get to the bottom, we immediately start the nearvertical climb up the other side, until we reach a wide clearing shaded by giant banyan trees. Men and boys are sitting around, wearing only their tradiional nambas or penis sheaths. This is a nakamal, a sacred meeting and dancing space where ancient paths cross, up in the cool mountains of Tanna, in the south of Vanuatu.
kastom kastom was the rallying call that united the 13 main islands and 70 islets in this Melanesian archipelago, with their 100 or so languages and almost as many cultural variations.
Keeping Kastom
But, as Bosen explains, kastom is much more than the flamboyant ceremonies, which can involve hundreds of people and years of preparation. "In the end, it comes down to peace and respect," he says. And traditional practices are, in one way or another, a means to preserve harmony, whether between generations, families, or simply to maintain human life in balance with the rest of nature.

AV Archives Management in the Pacific Mark Nizette
    Senior Manager, Access
National Film and Sound Archive of Australia Preamble A number of years ago, the formation of SEAPAVAA flagged the need for AV management training in both Asia and the Pacific. Over the past few years, various Asian countries have benefited from the activities of the association while it has concentrated on building its membership and strengthening its position in the AV community. In response to requests for assistance from a number of cultural institutions in the Pacific to develop their audio visual preservation and access, the NFSA has secured funds to conduct a "needs analysis" throughout the region to determine the optimum way in which we can assist. Rather than respond to each individual request, it makes sense to plan a strategy that takes into account the collective needs of the region, whilst at the same time has the fineness of resolution to address the needs of each collection. Although there are more than a dozen countries and scores of collections within the Pacific, four countries were chosen for the needs analysis based upon the size of the collections, previous contact, and the degree to which their collections represented the needs and resources of the region. Due to the logistics of transport, the analysis was conducted in two parts, Papua New Guinea was visited in October, followed in November by visits to Vanuatu, Fiji and Samoa. What follows is a brief summary of some of the major collections from these countries, reflecting common problems of storage, treatment, training and management throughout the region.

    Vanuatu
Vanuatu is the friendly face of the Pacific - a place where visitors will receive a warm welcome and can enjoy a relaxed holiday in beautiful tropical surroundings. The 83 islands that make up Vanuatu, previously known as the New Hebrides, present a diversity of scenic attractions from mountainous volcanic landscapes to gentle white sand beaches and the magnificent deepwater harbour at Port Vila. Each of the inhabited islands has it's own culture and language with traditional customs playing an important part in everyday life.
The islands reflect the influence of the French and English colonists - for much of the 20th century the British Queen and French President were joint heads of state of the New Hebrides. The author James A Michener was inspired to write "Tales of the South Pacific" after visiting the islands. The group's capital Port Vila is located on the island of Efate, along with the international airport. Many of Vanuatu's islands are serviced by the domestic airline so visitors have a wide range of destinations to choose from, each offering something different in terms of scenery and culture.
    Population:
Capital City: Port Vila on the island of Efate
Area: 2000km north of Auckland, New Zealand; 2500km north-east of Sydney, Australia; and 800km west of Nadi, Fiji. The 83 islands of Vanuatu cover a total land area of about 13,000sq km

    Malekula
Malekula’s rugged interior is clad in lush rainforest, and most of the inhabitants live in villages on the coast. It is Vanuatu’s second largest island and the most culturally diverse. There are over 30 distinct languages spoken, although only about 20,000 people live on the island. Malakula art and ritual objects are among the finest in Vanuatu and offer a unique insight into Ni-Vanuatu culture. The island is famous, in particular, for the complex ceremonies and rituals preserved by two of its remarkable tribes – the Big Nambas and Small Nambas. There is island-style bungalow accommodation available, and flights operate daily from Port Vila and Santo. Attractions:
    • Village Visits
Villagers enjoy sharing their cultural heritage with visitors. You can watch a custom dance, and visit a nakamal (clubhouse) and village garden. Tours provide a unique opportunity to learn about traditional Melanesian ways, including how the various ritual ceremonies are organised.
    • Bushwalks
Trails lead inland through the forest to remote waterfalls, and you may also see a natsaro – an ancient dance ground with standing stones and ceremonial cairns.

Why is it that an analysis written from the perspective of a western industrialized nation, with developed cultural industries, appeals as well to a cultural activist from Vanuatu? What are we working to achieve, Regenvanu as Executive Director of the Vanuatu Cultural Center and Neil as a consultant for various cultural producers and unions? What would we like to see instead of the cultural homogenization that is sweeping over the whole world? What we both want of course is flourishing local cultures, more balanced exchanges between cultures, preservation of threatened languages as reservoirs of knowledge and traditions. We want to increase the available choices for the consumers of arts and cultural products in all countries, we want them to be able to consume the creations of our artists and our cultural workers as well as those of dominant cultures. And Regenvanu and Neil also share an understanding that market forces alone will not bring this flourishing of cultures.
    - the importance to all societies of expression through arts and culture;

    The Contemporary Pacific - Volume 16, Number 1, Spring 2004, pp. 193-195
    University of Hawai'i Press

    Excerpt
    Unfolding the Moon,
the title of this book, is taken from a textile design and suggests the poetic resonance of women's agency as it is expressed through kastom practices embedded in the fabrication and exchange of textiles. In this book, women's textiles provide a route to understanding the gendered production of knowledge and women's kastom practices. This beautifully written book has much to say about the relationships between material objects and cultural practices; the articulation of gender and kastom practices; and the inclusionary [End Page 193] and exclusionary practices of kastom and nation building in postcolonial Vanuatu.

Starting at Santo going north and finishing at Santo or starting Vila and finishing Santo. Or Starting at Vila , Tanna, north as far as Santo. Guests can fly into Santo, Tanna, from Vila . The islands are a real cultural experience and are very remote. The people are very polite and friendly and the traditional dances that they perform are quite primitive. Anchorages are sometimes rolly. Overnights can be cut down if a smaller section of the group is explored in more detail. Some of the passages between islands can be a little rough if the trade winds are blowing hard. If guests have done open water cruising then it's a fascinating area to explore.

Since 1990 an international working group with specialists from Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Australia, New Zealand, France, UK, Canada, the United States and Switzerland has prepared the most comprehensive attempt to a cultural dialogue with Melanesia so far. C. Kaufmann, curator at the Oceania department of the Museum der Kulturen in Basle and initiatior of the idea, co-ordinated the project. The results of the project are an international touring exhibition as well as an extensive publication in English and in French.
