The island group of which Vanuatu is a part has been settled since BC 500. Up to and beyond the 13th century AD, it was at the heart of the empire of Tonga. During the 19th century, the islands making up Vanuatu (then called the New Hebrides) were settled by British and French missionaries, planters and traders. The UK and France eventually agreed on a condominium over the two islands. After World War II, a complex power struggle began between the indigenous islanders and the dual colonial interests over the future political and economic course of the islands. The constitutional position was settled in 1977, at a conference between British, French and New Hebridean representatives in Paris; it was agreed that the islands should become fully independent within three years.
At elections held in November 1979, just a few months before scheduled independence, the

The show, which will run for six months, was opened on Thursday and is expected to attract more than 30 million visitors. Recent reports from Port Vila say Vanuatu had planned to export food products to Japan for the event. However, strict quarantine laws there have put some limit on the amount of agricultural and food products Vanuatu can bring into the country. But despite the setbacks, Vanuatu will feature artefacts, custom dancers, tourism and products such as coffee from Tanna. The elaborately carved Tam Tams (slit drums) which provide the rhythmic and musical accompaniment, originated in Ambrym but have spread to other islands as well. A pig-killing ceremony, common to many kastom dances throughout Vanuatu and a tree fern carving judgment are also included in this unusual Rom dance festival.

Kava culture
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
In Hawaii , at least 30 varieties of kava were used for medicinal, religious, political, cultural and social purposes by all social classes, men and women. Kava is the original pau hana drink of working people to relax and ease achy muscles. Kava was also given to fussy babies and children to calm them and help them sleep. In Vanuatu , kava is drunk at night in a place called nakamal, "place for peace". Men drink it from a shell or empty coconut. Women were not allowed to drink kava historically. The Tamafa is a gift to the spiritual ancestors which consists of spitting a mouthful of kava drink, then telling a few words. The cult of Kava is different on each island of the archipelago. In Malekula, it is related to the cult of death. Sex and kava are related in Ni-Vanuatu culture. It is also used in traditional medicine, for fever, asthma, and aches, but the roots used for medicine are not the same ones used for drink. Pharmacologically, kava is recognized as an analgesic (pain killer), anxiolytic, and antibiotic. Kava certainly has a social, spiritual and medical purpose. In Tonga In Fiji , kava, also called "grog" or "yaqona" is a part of the fabric of life, drunk nightly by families and also used for important political and social events. The importance of the kava in Fiji is not so much physical, but a psychological event where stories are told and jokes bantered. It is often seen as a

Elections in Vanuatu
The constitution created a republican political system headed by a president who has primarily ceremonial powers and is elected by a two-thirds majority in an electoral college consisting of members of Parliament and the presidents of Regional Council s. The president serves a 5-year term. The president may be removed by the electoral college for gross misconduct or incapacity. The prime minister, who is the head of government, is elected by a majority vote of a three-fourths quorum of the Parliament . The prime minister in turn appoints the Council of Ministers , whose number may not exceed one-fourth of the number of parliamentary representatives. The prime minister and the Council of Ministers constitute the executive government. Parliament is a 52-member unicameral house elected by all persons over 18 years old. Parliament normally sits for a 4-year term unless dissolved by majority vote of a three-fourths quorum or a directive from the President on the advice of the prime minister. The national

History created at Wunpuko 7 January 2002 . The Hon Sela Molisa, Minister for Finance launched two books in the Chiefs nakamal at Wunpuko Village North West Santo on Saturday 4 January 2003, the first anniversary of his wife, Grace Mera Molisa's death. "This is a historic occasion, because it is the first time that the first launch of two books has been held outside one of the main town centres in Vanuatu", the Minister said. "In our ni-Vanuatu culture we have always recognised the importance of history through our oral traditions. However, now we are in a modern society we must start to write our history down.'' "Grace valued history and was always writing, sometimes getting up early in the morning to write. It is thus fitting that we launch these books at the occasion of the first anniversary of her death", he said. More than 250 people attended the ceremony, which took place prior to the dedication of the grave of Grace and her father in law, Mandei Rongtuhun, who died shortly after her on 31 January 2002 in Port Vila. The two graves lie side by side behind Sela Molisa's house at Wunpuko. The crowd included all community leaders, chiefs and church leaders from every village around North West Santo - from the two Presbyterian sessions: Rua, Session around the cape into Big Bay, Malavuko to Molpoi, and Potunpei Session, from Olboi to Petowat. Representatives of the Trinity and the Praise and Worship congregations also attended.

ICOM general conference, Seoul, Korea. October 2-8, 2004 Before discussing the Pacific collection a brief overview of Te Papa is required to set the context. Te Papa's significance as a museum institution in the Pacific is in part its commitment to being a bicultural organisation. This is through acknowledging the importance of the Treaty of Waitangi and the equal recognition and representation of its two signatories - Tangata Whenua, those who belong to the land by right of first discovery or Maori and Tangata Tiriti, those who belong to the country by right of the Treaty, or European. The bicultural ethos provide the foundation that shaped Te Papa in its incipient stages of development and infiltrates into the conceptual and operating framework of the organisation, right through to the governance level. Although Te Papa is committed to being a bicultural organisation, it has an obligation under the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa Act 1992 to represent other ethnic groups that make up New Zealand society. This is outlined in Section 8 of the Act, which requires that the Board shall:

With a population of 186,678 (from the Statistics Bureau 1999), Vanuatu boasts 113 distinct languages and innumerable dialects. This makes it one of the most culturally diverse countries on earth. This amazing diversity is a result of 3,000 years of sporadic immigration from many Pacific countries. Although most settlers arrive from Melanesia, the larger built, lighter skinned Polynesians also settled in the islands. As with all nations and peoples, over millennia these different groups came into both peaceful and violent contact, sometimes intermarrying and sometimes having losing their cultural identity to a more dominant group. Each successive wave of immigrants carried with them all the tools needed to live. Food crops, tree seedlings and their most important animal - the pig. This animal is probably the most significant aspect of life in Vanuatu, for it symbolises not simply a source of protein, it is the cornerstone of their ritual life, a token of wealth and power upon which entire societies are founded. Over the millennia, natural boundaries; large open stretches of water, dense jungle and mountainous terrain, isolated many groups, even from the same ethnic origins, from each other. And isolation bred not just warfare, but quite different, sophisticated societies and political systems.
