Van Buren assisted in resolving a long-standing dispute with Great Britain involving restrictions placed on U.S. trade with the British West Indies. By the time Jackson became president, neither power would allow direct West Indies trade with the other. After considerable negotiation, in which the United States indicated its determination to settle the problem amicably and quickly, it was agreed that the ports of the British West Indies and the United States would be open to ships of each nation on terms of full reciprocity, without duties against ships of either nation or their cargoes. Van Buren helped gain a treaty with the French by which France agreed to pay the damage claims from the

Introduction
Print Preview of Section Van Buren, Martin (1782-1862), eighth president of the United States (1837-1841) and the first president born after the United States won its independence. He was regarded by his contemporaries as such a wily and artful politician that they dubbed him the “Little Magician” and the “Red Fox of Kinderhook.” However, these unflattering nicknames could not obscure his statesmanlike qualities or his valuable contributions to the political development of the nation. He was a political broker, pragmatic in his approach to problems and constantly concerned about winning elections. Nevertheless, he was intellectually committed to Jeffersonian democracy, and as governor of New York and president of the United States he instituted a number of farsighted economic and political reforms. These included bank deposit insurance, the independent treasury system, and a limit on labor hours. He also played a major role in the creation of the

Fast Fact: Martin Van Buren was the first Chief Executive born under the United States flag. Biography: Only about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, but trim and erect, Martin Van Buren dressed fastidiously. His impeccable appearance belied his amiabilityand his humble background. Of Dutch descent, he was born in 1782, the son of a tavernkeeper and farmer, in Kinderhook, New York. As a young lawyer he became involved in New York politics. As leader of the "Albany Regency," an effective New York political organization, he shrewdly dispensed public offices and bounty in a fashion calculated to bring votes. Yet he faithfully fulfilled official duties, and in 1821 was elected to the United States Senate. By 1827 he had emerged as the principal northern leader for Andrew Jackson. President Jackson rewarded Van Buren by appointing him Secretary of State. As the Cabinet Members appointed at John C. Calhoun's recommendation began to demonstrate only secondary loyalty to Jackson, Van Buren emerged as the
President's most trusted adviser. Jackson referred to him as, "a true man with no guile."

Martin Van Buren National Historic Site, in Kinderhook, New York, is a unit of the U.S. National Park Service. It preserves, protects and interprets for the public the estate and home of Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States of America. The mission of Martin Van Buren National Historic Site is to preserve Lindenwald, the home and farm of the nation's eighth president. Martin Van Buren's life bridged the 80 years between the American War for Independence and the U.S. Civil War, the critical formative years of the American Republic. He was among the most prominent Jacksonian politicians, one whose political activities were prototypical and became common practice in American politics and are still an influence. When coupled with its surroundings and vistas, Lindenwald appears as it did when Martin Van Buren lived; it provides an aesthetically pleasing resource which is intimately and tangibly related to his life. As such it allows for successful study and understanding of President Van Buren's life and times as well as a refreshing recreational resource.

The promise of the American Revolution, the turmoil of antebellum politics and the tragedy of the Civil War frame Martin Van Buren’s life. Van Buren was born in Kinderhook in 1782, the last year of the American Revolution. He lived until July 1862, sixteen months into the American Civil War. He was among the most prominent politicians of his time and an architect of the party system that still shapes American political life. He purchased this grand house and farm in his hometown while president. The property grew to 226 acres under his direction and was a profitable working farm. He named his place Lindenwald. Politics before the Civil War was a whirlwind of boisterous characters and opposing interest groups. Martin Van Buren positioned himself in the eye of the political storm and in the process helped to found the Democratic Party. His skill propelled him to the presidency in 1837, but it was not enough to assure reelection to a second term in the wake of a massive bank panic and economic depression. He returned to Kinderhook in 1841, but continued to be a central figure in American politics. As frustration, anger and violence over the extension of slavery grew in the 1840's, Van Buren ran for the presidency twice more from this house. Although the park presently encompasses just 38.50 acres, much of the adjacent land is conservation land. Some of the conservation land is open to the public. Most of the property retains a very high degree of integrity to the period of President Van Buren's residence. This serves to add environmental and historic context to the life and lifestyle of Martin Van Buren. BEFORE GOING ON ANY ADJACENT LANDS PLEASE SPEAK TO A PARK RANGER. .

Inaugural Address
ATURDAY, MARCH 4, 1837 The ailing President Jackson and his Vice President Van Buren rode together to the Capitol from the White House in a carriage made of timbers from the U.S.S. Constitution. Chief Justice Roger Taney administered the oath of office on the East Portico of the Capitol. For the first and only time, the election for Vice President had been decided by the Senate, as provided by the Constitution, when the electoral college could not select a winner. The new Vice President, Richard M. Johnson, took his oath in the Senate Chamber.
So sensibly, fellow-citizens, do these circumstances press themselves upon me that I should not dare to enter upon my path of duty did I not look for the generous aid of those who will be associated with me in the various and coordinate branches of the Government; did I not repose with unwavering reliance on the patriotism, the intelligence, and the kindness of a people who never yet deserted a public servant honestly laboring their cause; and, above all, did I not permit myself humbly to hope for the sustaining support of an ever-watchful and beneficent Providence. To the confidence and consolation derived from these sources it would be ungrateful not to add those which spring from our present fortunate condition. Though not altogether exempt from embarrassments that disturb our tranquillity at home and threaten it abroad, yet in all the attributes of a great, happy, and flourishing people we stand without a parallel in the world. Abroad we enjoy the respect and, with scarcely an exception, the friendship of every nation; at home, while our Government quietly but efficiently performs the sole legitimate end of political institutionsin doing the greatest good to the greatest number we present an aggregate of human prosperity surely not elsewhere to be found.

United Church of Christ Keep in mind that in the table above, the % of the U.S. population for religious groups are current figures. Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. Another over-represented religious group among U.S. presidents is Dutch Reformed, by virtue of having two U.S. presidents, yet having only a small number of people left in the country who identify themselves as Reformed. The contemporary heir to the Dutch Reformed churches is the "Reformed Church in America," which has about 300,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. (Alternatively, one might count only a single president as Dutch Reformed, if Theodore Roosevelt is counted as an Episcopalian sources differ on this subject . Even just one Dutch Reformed president would constitute statistical over-representation.) After that, Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians, and Quakers have also had representation in the White House far outstripping their proportion of the U.S. population.

Martin Van Buren (1782-1862) ran for President three times but won only the first time. He served during the nation's first great depression, the Panic of 1837. The panic brought financial ruin and misery to millions. Many turned to the government for aid, but Van Buren refused to help. He believed in Thomas Jefferson's idea that government should play the smallest possible role in American life. "The less government interferes," Van Buren explained, "the better for general prosperity."
Van Buren's erect bearing and high, broad forehead gave him a dignified appearance. He had served as vice president under Andrew Jackson, and, as president, Van Buren inherited much of Jackson's popularity. But during the three years of the panic, Van Buren bore the anger of a disappointed people. His enemies accused him of being a sly, scheming politician. They called Van Buren "The Little Magician" and "The Fox of Kinderhook." They ridiculed his courteous manners. When he continued to deal politely with his political rivals, his enemies said this approach showed his lack of deep convictions.

The rift in the Cabinet became serious because of Jackson's differences with Calhoun, a Presidential aspirant. Van Buren suggested a way out of an eventual impasse: he and Secretary of War Eaton resigned, so that Calhoun men would also resign. Jackson appointed a new Cabinet, and sought again to reward Van Buren by appointing him Minister to Great Britain. Vice President Calhoun, as President of the Senate, cast the deciding vote against the appointmentand made a martyr of Van Buren.
