Martin Van Buren National Historic Site, in Kinderhook, New York, is a unit of the U.S. National Park Service. It preserves, protects and interprets for the public the estate and home of Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States of America. The mission of Martin Van Buren National Historic Site is to preserve Lindenwald, the home and farm of the nation's eighth president. Martin Van Buren's life bridged the 80 years between the American War for Independence and the U.S. Civil War, the critical formative years of the American Republic. He was among the most prominent Jacksonian politicians, one whose political activities were prototypical and became common practice in American politics and are still an influence. When coupled with its surroundings and vistas, Lindenwald appears as it did when Martin Van Buren lived; it provides an aesthetically pleasing resource which is intimately and tangibly related to his life. As such it allows for successful study and understanding of President Van Buren's life and times as well as a refreshing recreational resource.

MARTIN VAN BUREN U.S. President Martin Van Buren was a U.S. Senator and governor of New York, and one of the founders of the Democratic Party. Under Andrew Jackson , Van Buren served as Secretary of State, Minister to England and Vice President. Shortly after Van Buren took office a financial panic in 1837 forced several bank closures. Van Buren ran for re-election in 1840, but was defeated by the Whig candidate, William Henry Harrison
Extra credit : The eight president of the U.S., Van Buren was nicknamed "The Little Magician" for his political skills (and small frame)... He was a widower with four sons when he moved into the White House... He was also called "Old Kinderhook" after his hometown, and that nickname is supposed to have given rise to the term "OK"... Washington Irving wrote most of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" while staying at Van Buren's home Lindenwald in Kinderhook.

      Martin Van Buren Born: Birthplace:
Kinderhook, N.Y. Martin Van Buren In 1832, Van Buren became vice president; in 1836, president. The Panic of 1837 overshadowed his term. He attributed it to the overexpansion of the credit and favored the establishment of an independent treasury as repository for the federal funds. In 1840, he established a 10-hour day on public works. Defeated by Harrison in 1840, he was the leading contender for the Democratic nomination in 1844 until he publicly opposed immediate annexation of Texas, and was subsequently beaten by the Southern delegations at the Baltimore convention. This incident increased his growing misgivings about the slave power. After working behind the scenes among the anti-slavery Democrats, Van Buren joined in the movement that led to the Free-Soil Party and became its candidate for president in 1848. He subsequently returned to the Democratic Party while continuing to object to its pro-Southern policy. He died in Kinderhook on July 24, 1862. His Autobiography throws valuable sidelights on the political history of the times.

Martin Van Buren was born in Kinderhook, New York, the son of a Dutch tavern owner. Van Buren was exposed to politicians and political argument by the steady steam of visitors who frequented his father’s establishment. He was educated in a local academy, later studied law and was admitted to the New York bar in 1803. Van Buren became involved in local politics and served in the state senate from 1813 to 1820. During these years the Democratic-Republican Party in New York was split; one faction supported Governor De Witt Clinton and the other opposed him. The latter group, the Bucktails (so-called because they wore buck tails pinned to their hats at political gatherings), was led by Van Buren. During this period he developed a reputation as an accomplished (some said unscrupulous) politician, winning him the nicknames “Little Magician” and “Red Fox of Kinderhook.” In 1825, Van Buren entered the national arena as the junior senator from New York State. Before going to Washington, he established the “ Albany Regency ,” a political machine designed to manage New York politics in his absence; Van Buren was one of the first political bosses in American history.
