“Martin Van Buren was the son of a truck farmer/innkeeper. He met politicians who stopped by the inn on their way to and from the state capital. He became a law clerk at the age of fourteen after attending a village school. By twenty-one he had a successful law practice. He was ambitious as a politican. He was nicknamed ‘Little Magician’ because of his political prowess and his small size. He helped Andrew Jackson win the presidency, and as a reward Jackson appointed him secretary of state and then vice president. In 1836, Van Buren was elected President. Soon after, the nation suffered a financial depression. Van Buren’s popularity decreased because of the financial panic, border disputes and accusations from pro-slavery and anti-slavery leaders. He was defeated in his bed for a second term and a third time in 1848 when he ran on the Free Soil Party ticket – a group opposed to slavery.”

  • Winning the first presidency by a unanimous vote, with some individuals having wished to make Washington king, it seems unusual that he did not really want the position of president. Although a successful general and president, Washington remained interested in farming throughout his presidency. He bred animals, specializing in the breeding of mules and helped to raise the quality of stock across the nation. As the first president, Washington had many new tasks to accomplish with trial and error as the only available method for accomplishing them. After appointing people to head the four executive departments, he tried to meet with each head, or ] secretary, individually. This proved to be daunting. As a result he had the secretaries meet with him as a group, forming the government's first cabinet. New York was the nation’s first capital, but people felt that the capital should be outside the territory of any states. George Washington selected the site for our current capital between the states of Maryland and Virginia. While the new capital was being built, Washington led the country from Philadelphia, which served as a temporary capital.

The Amistad as Campaign Issue
Goals of these exercises:
Students will examine history as an executive and political problem, a public relations conundrum that exposes the underpinnings of American national politics c.1840, presenting the President with a messy issue, in which political costs and payoffs are inextricably tangled up in each other.
In class activities:
Students may role-play a political consultant (the term is anachronistic, but the concept is definitely not) advising a presidential candidate on how to proceed, what stance to take, and informing him/her of the costs various possible responses would exact in terms of political support in the various regions, among the various constituencies.
The resources listed below from the Exploring Amistad digital library are starting points for student research. Additional resources may be found by searching the web site and the digital library.

16 June 2004
Broadcast: June 17, 2004 (MUSIC) VOICE ONE: THE MAKING OF A NATION a program in Special English. (MUSIC) Martin Van Buren took office as America's eighth president in eighteen-thirty-seven. Not long after, the United States suffered a severe economic depression. Many state banks produced more paper money than they could guarantee with gold or silver. As more paper money was put into use, the value of the money fell. Prices rose sharply. Some people could not buy the food and other things they needed. In a short time, the demand on banks to exchange paper money for gold and silver grew too heavy. The banks stopped these exchanges. They said the situation was only temporary. But the crisis continued. VOICE TWO: Many of the weaker state banks closed after gold and silver payments were suspended. Those that stayed open had almost no money to lend. Businessmen could not pay back money they owed the banks. And they could not get loans to keep their businesses open. Many factories closed. Great numbers of people were out of work.

I have visited this site two times. The first time I went there were some wilted flowers near the grave. Traditionally, the current president sends flowers to the graves of each of the deceased former presidents on their birthdays. Van Buren's birthday was a week or so before I got there, so the flowers were still there. I arrived at President Grover Cleveland 's grave the day after his birthday, so you can see more fresh flowers at his gravesite picture.
