Valentine's Day Poems
Valentine's Day honors two different saints named Valentine. However, customs for the holiday have nothing to do with the lives of these saints. The customs come from the ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia, which took place on February 15. The festival honored Pan, the Roman god of nature, and Juno, the goddess of women and marriage. During this festival young people drew names from a box and exchanged gifts. Gradually the custom of giving gifts was replaced by sending cards. Today Valentine's Day, celebrated on February 14, is a time to display love and affection. People send cards, candy, or flowers as valentines to their sweethearts, friends, and family.

ST. VALENTINES DAY
The Holiday of Love

Valentine’s Day, celebrated on the 14th of February, has become a lovers’ holiday. Today couples in love exchange gifts such as candy and flowers to show their affection for one another. Valentine’s Day began however, in 5th Century Rome as a tribute to St. Valentine, a Catholic bishop. Valentine became the saint of love after he was beheaded by Emperor Claudius. Claudius felt that married men made poor soldiers so he banned marriage in Rome. Opposed to this idea Valentine secretly married young men and women who came to him. For his efforts Valentine was imprisoned and eventually killed. While he was in prison however, he fell madly in love with the blind daughter of his jailer. Through his faith Valentine was able to heal his love from her blindness. Right before he was taken to his death, he signed a farewell message to her, “From your Valentine.” This phrase has been used on St Valentine’s Day ever since.

    St. Valentine's Day
    Christian Custom? or Pagan Holiday

    by Dr. Herman L. Hoeh
WHERE DID St. Valentine's Day come from?
You might suppose school teachers educators would know. But do they? How many of you were ever taught the real origin of Valentine's Day? - were ever told in school why you should observe the custom of exchanging valentines?
    The Silence of Educators
Teachers are all too often silent about the origin of the customs they are forced to teach in today's schools! If they were to speak out, many would lose their jobs!
Isn't it time we examined why we encourage our children to celebrate St. Valentine's Day - when it is never mentioned in the Bible as a practice of the New Testament Church?
Today, candymakers unload tons of heart-shaped red boxes for February 14, while millions of the younger set are annually exchanging valentines. Florists consider February 14 - St. Valentine's Day - as one of their best business days. And young lovers pair off - at least for a dance or two - at St. Valentine's balls.
Why? Where did these customs originate? Where do we find any such practices in the Bible? How did we come to inherit these customs?

    Valentine's Day
@ Valentine's Day has come and gone. Japanese people give chocolates ongValentinefs Dayh but giving chocolates is just one of the options here in America. On that day people send cards and give presents flowers, candies, or whatever and it is a day not only for women but for everybody to show their love to their loved ones.
(Wow, does this mean that I get double gifts because my birthday is on February 14?)
When my son was in kindergarten in Illinois, his teacher gave out a list of all his classmates so that the mothers could help their children sign their names on the Valentine cards to give away to their friends.
They also each made a candy carrier at school and on Valentines Day they filled them with valentines.
This year his fourth grade class had a Valentinefs Party and the children brought Valentine cards for every student. He has thirty-one classmates so he gave away 31 valentines!
I heard that upper-graders usually do not give out many valentines any more but since his class had a party he was happy to sign the valentines cards for all his classmates.

But there's more to the celebration of love and affection than the standard paired sweethearts, and there's no reason why the very concept of Valentine's Day can't expand to accommodate everyone. When love is in the air you can share its spirit with friends, relatives, and neighbors, and find fun new ways to enjoy the holiday en masse. The Secret to Being Loved
    by Marie Hartwell-Walker, Ed.D.
One of the most important things we can teach our children, perhaps the most important thing, is how to be loved and loving. We can't protect them from the many difficulties, even tragedies, of life. But we can teach them how to surround themselves with support and love. People who are loved have people around them to celebrate the good times, to share life's triumphs, and to manage the rough spots. People who have solid relationships are seldom lonely and seldom lost – no matter how challenging or painful their life's course. People who are loved have a security deep inside that makes it possible to take risks and to accept defeats. People who are loved during life die satisfied. As basic and important as love is, it certainly isn't simple. I know it doesn't sound very romantic, but love is a skill as well as an emotion. It's something we do as well as something we feel. Love has to be reciprocal and active if it is to last. People who don't know how to do love – to both give and receive it – often lose it. The only exceptions to this rule are "mother-love" and "God-love"; Mom and God each cut us far more slack than anyone else ever will (and often far more than we deserve). As soon as we reach beyond Mom and God, however, love becomes very complicated.
