(Partly because of this confusion, the Valentine commemorations were dropped from the official Church calendar of universally celebrated feasts about 25 years ago, although local churches can still choose to observe them.) Legends attribute affectionate letters from prison to both Valentines. A few days after I handed in the article, the editor called to tell me to shorten the introduction. How many of you were ever taught the real origin of Valentine's Day? were ever told in school WHY you should observe the custom of exchanging valentines? The Silence of Educators Teachers are all too often silent about the origin of the customs they are forced to teach in today's schools! If they were to speak out, many would lose their jobs! Isn't it time we examined why we encourage our children to celebrate St. Valentine's Day when it is never so much as mentioned in the Bible as a practice of the New Testament Church? Today, candymakers unload tons of heart-shaped red boxes for February 14, while millions of the younger set are annually exchanging valentines Florists consider February 14 St. Valentine's Day as one of their best business days. And young lovers pair off at least for a dance or two at St. Valentine's balls. Why? Where did these customs originate? Where do we find any such practices in the Bible? How did we come to inherit these customs?

Many teachers require students to give a valentine to everyone in the class, but what if your child doesn't want to send a card to all of his peers? Explain that sending valentines to everyone in his class shows kindness because it prevents people from feeling hurt or left out if they don't receive many valentines. Ask your child to think about how he would feel if he didn't get as many valentines as others. Not every teacher insists on a card for every student, so what can you do if your child isn't one of the popular kids? Explain to her that what matters most is not how many valentines she receives, but that they come from her true friends. Help your child understand that the quality, not the quantity, of her friendships matters most on Valentine's Day and every other day of the year, and that true friends should be treasured. If a bully decides to torment your child by giving him a nasty valentine, how do you fix his broken heart? After giving him a loving hug, assure him that he has done nothing wrong and explain that bullies want to know that they've hurt someone. Encourage him to ignore the nasty valentine and instead to think about the valentines he received from his real friends. Helping your child feel good about himself is the best medicine for a broken heart.

Executive Director, Dr Gill Greer says amidst the roses and chocolates, New Zealanders should make sure that they act responsibly and respect themselves and each other. “Valentines Day can be a lovely day of romance, but we also need to remember to keep ourselves safe and look after each other.” Dr Greer said if couples were not planning to have a child they needed to be sure they used contraception.
