    http://www.geocities.com/ethnics_of_central_asia/
Major Ethnic Groups in Central Asia The Andronovo Culture shows evidence of a very early history (late Bronze Age) of the Indo-Iranian speaking peoples in Central Asia.
Turkic people came to these areas much later, during the middle age.
Ethnically, Central Asia occupies a kind of bridge between the Turkic and Persian worlds. While various ethnic groups historically occupied different economic niches, they were all nativeto the land. Bi-lingualism was seen as normal for many centuries, not only among the intellectual elite but the common people as well. Command of three or four languages was not exceptional. Society and culture were formed on a multi-lingual basis. This process was facilitated by the fact that no nation-states, as understood in Western terms, took shape in Central Asia for many centuries. Local khanates and emirates were not formed from any one ethnic community. No ethnic criteria were applied in forming a ruling elite.
For a variety of reasons the designers of the Soviet "national delimitation" in Central Asia discriminated against the Tajiks, having deprived the newly formed republic of Tajikistan of the two most important centers of Tajik urban culture, Bukhara and Samarkand , as well as regions of Fergana, Surhandarya and Khwrazm which were awarded to Uzbekistan. The majority of population in Uzbekistan are Tajiks. In the words of William Beeman, professor of anthropology at Brown University: "The Tajik situation in some ways resembles that of post-colonial Africa. Tajiks have been given an impossible piece of territory with disparate population and have been forced to make a nation out of it."

Retaliation: Bush says 'time is running out'
SUMMARY: President Bush, in his weekly radio address, warned that "time is running out" for the Taliban to meet his demand that they surrender Osama bin Laden, the Islamic militant leader U.S. officials blame for the September 11 attacks on Washington and New York. The United States has been massing forces in southwest Asia for a possible strike against Afghanistan if the Taliban refuse to comply. UPDATE: The Bush administration also rejected an offer by the ruling Taliban to release Western aid workers on trial in Afghanistan if the United States ended its "propaganda" about military action. "Full warning has been given and time is running out," Bush said. ( Full story U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld returned to Washington early Saturday after a three-day swing to garner international support for the U.S.-led war on terrorism, capped by an unplanned stop in Turkey. He met with leaders in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Egypt, Uzbekistan and Turkey. Each nation could play a key role in any possible humanitarian and military missions in the region. (

Terror no stranger to Afghanistan's neighbor Uzbekistan
Alessio Vinci TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (CNN) – Hoping to bolster an international coalition against terrorism, U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld this week will visit a number of nations in the Middle East and Central Asia. The predominantly Islamic states include a strategic neighbor to the north of Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, from where CNN correspondent Alessio Vinci filed the following report on Wednesday. VINCI: Uzbekistan, Central Asia's most populous nation …has been fighting its own war against what it calls terrorism for a decade. A turning point in that struggle came in February 1999 when a series of car bombs rocked the capital, Tashkent, killing 16 people, injuring many more. The president, Islam Karimov, said the attacks were an assassination attempt against him and blamed Islamic fundamentalists. President Karimov says he is ready to help the U.S. fight against terrorism, but, he says, he will not take the battle to the Taliban in Afghanistan for fear of reprisals. His own war against terrorism began years ago and it is still ongoing.
