Welcome to Doug Burnett's Travelogues: What could be better - a new city and plenty of time to explore. I love to just wander around with no particular place to be, taking each day as it comes. Of course, travel is not always like that: some days you must rise early and run to catch the train; others you end up wandering around in the rain looking for a decent hotel. But it's the hope that there will be something truly remarkable around the next corner that keeps me going. Here are my most recent trips: New: Pakistan, April 2005 This was an incredibly hot trip: Delhi to Lahore and Peshawar and finally up the Khyber Pass. Then back to Amritsar to see the Golden Temple before cooling off in Kathmandu. New: Photo album: Vietnam, January 2005 Motorcycle recklesness in Hue ; a brush with the military in Da Nang ; custom-made clothes in Hoi An ; and then my past catches up with me in Saigon . Also travel details Photo album: A silk buying trip. I started in Isaan (northeast Thailand) where I visited some weaving villages, followed by a stop in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, to buy more silk. Photo album: South India, January 2004

The following is a brief description of a 12 day trip through Uzbekistan. Section 1 is a description of the trip. Section 2 is a few practical notes, in the form of corrections and additions to the Cadogan book 'Central Asia: The Practical Handbook' by Giles Whittel. This is the only practical guide to Central Asia and essential for independent travellers.
THE TRIP
[It did appear that people who claimed to be in transit, i.e. to Almaty, were given visas on the spot without any pre-arrangement. I don't know how long their visas were for, although if you did this, you would have to find some way of getting other towns in Uzbekistan added to your visa before being able to get there easily.]
Several hours later, we left the airport and paid $5 for a taxi to the hotel (later we found that there is a bus that goes directly from the airport to the downtown, stopping by the Metro and Hotel Uzbekistan - bus number 25. But when you exit the airport and are surrounded by a crowd of taxi drivers, it is impossible to unearth this information!) The Hotel Uzbekistan, which cost us US$150 per night for a double, was about the same quality as a run-down cheap motel off some out-of-the-way highway in the U.S., but not as friendly, or as clean, or as service oriented! It is a good introduction to the remains of the Soviet tourist infrastructure. I try to think of our two nights hotel as a bonus, thrown in for free with our US$200 per person visa fee.

Chirchik's AgroCenter Promoting Biointensive
by Carol Vesecky Our team to Uzbekistan included Albie Miles, a teacher of Biointensive and apiculture based at UC Santa Cruz and myself, Carol Vesecky, director of Biointensive for Russia . The program included a return visit to Chirchik, Uzbekistan, sponsored by Winrock's USAID-funded Farmer-to-Farmer Program.
Darina Drapkin and Patrick Williams, co-director of the Santa Cruz Homeless Garden, offered workshops in Chirchik last spring. Darina and Patrick donated funds to help purchase a dacha (house and garden) that is now being used as a Biointensive demonstration garden by our host Irina Kim.
Albie and I spent the week with Irina offering follow-up lectures to her 48 students in the Mini-Farmer Class and Ecoclub at the Combined Studies Center, a senior high school where students receive instruction qualifying them for many different occupations as well as for university entrance. Last summer, Irina took the Ecoclub's "activists" on the road and together they taught workshops in the Nuratau Nature Reserve and the Brichmulla Forestry Farm. This summer, they've already carried out several more such teaching trips, and are committed to reversing desertification in Uzbekistan by promoting Biointensive throughout the country. We were both greatly impressed with the degree to which the students had assimilated Biointensive concepts since last year's workshop. They also clearly understood their potential for solving the desertification problem in Uzbekistan, largely caused by the cotton monoculture and wasteful ditch irrigation. In addition to reviewing the basic topics of Biointensive "how-to's" and their implications for helping protect the environment, Albie described his 1996 research project on nutritional self-sufficiency. For 7 months, he ate only those foods he personally grew in his garden. I led an introductory exercise in garden planning and provided students with crop planning worksheets, calculators, and copies of the first (1993) edition of the Russian translation of

Uzbekistan OKs 'humanitarian' role for U.S. troops
U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division soldiers march in Uzbekistan during training exercises in 1998. TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (CNN) About 1,000 U.S. troops were headed on Friday for Uzbekistan, which borders Afghanistan, after the central Asian country agreed to allow U.S. forces to use one of its bases for humanitarian missions. Uzbek President Islam Karimov said Friday that U.S. forces could use an Uzbek air base for humanitarian missions like food drops and search and rescue flights, but said his country is "not ready yet" to allow the U.S. military to be based here "as an offensive force against Afghanistan." Karimov met Friday with U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who promised the Uzbek leader a long relationship between the two countries. He said he may reconsider allocating further air bases and accommodating ground troops once "the consequences of the land attack are being considered."

ISLAMIC MOVEMENT OF UZBEKISTAN CONTROLS DRUG TRAFFIC TO CENTRAL ASIA, SPECIAL SERVICES SAY
According to Kirghiz secret services, channels for trafficking drugs from Afghanistan to Central Asian countries are currently controlled by gunmen of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU).
The above has been revealed by Bolot Dzhanuzakov, head of the National Security Service of Kirghizia, in an interview the Slovo Kyrgyzstana newspaper carried Tuesday.
Dzhanuzakov said that gunmen led by the IMU's Dzhuma Namangani control the northern section of the drug traffic from Afghanistan. He noted that, apart from being drug traffickers, they also sell drugs in Kirghizia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
The National Security Service chief believes that "the main task of the international terrorists is to keep the drug traffic going, as the drug business has been and remains the main source of finance for international terrorism." Dzhanuzakov recalled that "Afghanistan is a leader of illicit drug trade, accounting for two-thirds of the world's narcotics output." Dzhanuzakov also declared that there remains the possibility of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan's gunmen invading Kirghizia. "We are ready to repel a possible invasion, and we possess reliable information on the number, plans and whereabouts of the gunmen," said Dzhanuzakov. He added that Afghanistan remains the seat of bandit units.

The land along the upper Amu-Darya, Syr-Darya and their tributaries has always been different from the rest of Central Asia. Its people are more settled than nomadic, with patterns of land use and social structures that changed little from the 6th century BC to the 19th century. The region was part of several very old Persian states. During the 4th century BC, Alexander the Great passed through and married the daughter of a local chieftain near Samarkand. Under the Kushan empire, Buddhism took hold and the Silk Road brought peaceful contact with the wider world. Towns grew and the area became rich.
u z b e k i s t a n In the 6th century AD, Western Turks rode out of the steppes, bringing Islam and a written alphabet. When they moved on to greener pastures, Persia took over again, until Jenghiz Khan and his hordes rolled over the country. With the rise of the ruthless warrior Timur in the 14th century, Uzbekistan again rose to prosperity and Samarkand became a glittering Islamic capital thanks to his patronage of the arts.
Around this time, certain Mongol tribes took the name Uzbek. In the 14th century they began moving south, eventually conquering Timur's empire. By 1510 they had control of everything from the Amu-Darya to the Syr-Darya, and they have maintained control ever since. In the early 18th century the khan of Khiva asked Peter the Great of Russia for aid in defending his land against Turkmen and Kazaks, stirring the first Russian interest in Central Asia. However, by the time the Russians got around to marching on Khiva, the khan no longer wanted their help and massacred almost the entire army. Apart from a few minor forays, the next major Russian excursion was made in 1839 by Tsar Nicholas I, who was eager to prevent British expansion in the area, but the mission was not a great success. Twenty-five years later the Russians again made a serious move on Uzbekistan and by 1875 the region was theirs.
