Background
The History Institute (until 1970 - the Institute of History and Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic) was established in 1943, on the basis of the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Uzbek branch affiliated with the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.
The Institute’s activity commenced under the direction of Z.Sh.Radjabov (1943-1945) and continued under the direction of V.A.Shishkin (1945-1947), V.Ya. Nepomnin (1947-1949), R.N.Nabiev (1949-1952), Kh.T.Tursunov (1952-1955), I.M.Muminov (1955-1956), Ya.G.Guljamov (1956-1959), A.Kh.Babakhodjaev (1959-1964), M.A.Akhunova (1965-1986), R.E.Radjapova (1986-1991), A.A.Askarov (1991-1996), A.R.Muchamedjanov (1996-1998), M.M.Iskhakov (1998-2000), and D.A.Alimova (starting in 2000).
When first established, the Institute staff numbered 44 employees with two Doctors Habil. and five Ph. D.s in History; now the Institute has 71 employees, including two Academicians of The Uzbek Academy of Sciences, one Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 17 Doctors Habil. and 25 Ph. D.s in history.
The Institute has made significant contributions to the study of the past: its monuments; Uzbekistan’s history from ancient times to the present; and the ethnogenesis, culture and life of the peoples of Uzbekistan. Noteworthy among the Institute’s activities is the arrangement of various academic conferences, discussions, symposia and "roundtable" meetings attended by historians representing the leading scientific centres of Russia and the post-Soviet Central Asian countries. These discussion proceedings have been published in the series, "Topical Problems of Historical Science," issued by the Institute.

Uzbekistan has been home for many ancient civilisations, such as the Bactrian and the Khorezm, Sogdiana and the Parthian. The Great Silk Road stretched across this land, running from China to the Mediterranean. Thousand of years ago, fabulous cities with beautiful palaces, grand mosques, high minarets and madrasahs were built on this land. The territory of modern-day Uzbekistan and its close neighbours have witnessed many empires rise and fall. The Sogdians, the Macedonians, the Huns, the Mongolians, the Seljuks, the Timurids and the Khanates of Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva and Khorezm all held sway here at one time or another. The history of Central Asia is a story of endless wars and conquests. Let us mention a few of them.

87. A Short History Of Uzbekistan
In the 8 century BC in presentday uzbekistan the state of Khorazm is founded. At that moment uzbekistan becomes a seperate member of the USSR.
http://www.electionworld.org/history/uzbekistan.htm
In the 8 century BC in present-day Uzbekistan the state of Khorazm is founded. Since the sixth century BC the area is under foreign control, by Persia Macedon and Hellenic states. In the first century BC the area becomes part of Kushan , followed by the Kaganate of Turkish people's in the sixth and the Arabic Caliphate in the seventh century. In the ninth century the area is the centre of the Tajiki state of the Samanides . In the twelfth century the Saljuq Sultanate conquers the area. It is overrun by Genghis Khan and his Mongols in 1220. In the 1300s, Timur, known in the west as Tamerlane, builds the Timurid Empire with its capital at Samarkand. In 1360 Khorazm becomes independent, but in 1370 the area becomes part of the Mongolian state of Timuride Empire. Turkish tribes found in 1400 the Uzbekian Khanate . This khanate is divided in 1598 in the Khanate (later Emirate) of Bukhara and Khiva , followed in 1800 by the Khanate of Kokand . In 1865 Russia occupies Tashkent and by the end of the 19th century, Russia has conquered all of Central Asia. In 1876 the Russians dissolved the Khanate of Kokand, while allowing the Khanates of Khiva and Bukhara to remain as direct protectorates. In 1924, following the establishment in 1920 of Soviet power in both Khiva as the Khorazm People's Republic and Bukhara as the People's Republic of Bukhara, the Soviet Socialist Republic of Uzbekistan

Description of Flag
Uzbekistan was the first central Asia republic to declare its sovereignty and to adopt post-Communist symbols. The flag of Uzbekistan is a light blue over white over light green tricolour, with thin red stripes separating the three stripes. In the upper hoist corner is a white crescent and 12 white stars. Oddly, although Uzbekistan is a predominantly Muslim country, and the crescent is a symbol of Islam, the symbolism for the crescent moon is described as being representative of the rebirth of the nation, rather than its religion. The 12 stars stand for the zodiac. White is for peace, green for nature, and red for the life force. The blue stripe stands for eternal night and for water as a fundamental source of life.

89. Islam Karimov President Of Uzbekistan

Islam Karimov
President of Uzbekistan
New Internationalist magazine, October 2004
President, Islam Kaman has a well-deserved reputation as one of the former Soviet Union's most brutal dictators. What is less appreciated, however, is his role as a master political ironist. Born in 1938, he trained as an engineer and economist, rising through party structures to become President of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic in 1990. His hardline instincts led him to support the anti-Gorbachev coup in 1991. But I'. when it became clear that it had failed he opportunistically switched sides and declared Uzbekistan independent.
Eternally modest: propaganda painting - His rule got off to a grand showing President Karimov as a culmination start. In 1992 he claimed: of Uzbekistan's glorious history. : 'Much of what we have failed to achieve for centuries has been attained during the first year of our Republic's independence.' If true this would have been impressive - under late Soviet modernization Uzbekistan experienced a rapid increase in living standards and Central Asian states actually achieved higher literacy rates and a greater percentage of indigenous PhDs than the US.
In fact, under Islam Karimov pensions and real wages have been massively devalued, the universal healthcare system has crumbled and full employment evaporated. To paraphrase one academic: it is remarkable how quickly Uzbekistan has gone from being largely incomparable to the Third World to being largely indistinguishable from it.

Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan Early History The wealth of Mawarannahr was a constant magnet for invasions from the northern steppes and from China. Numerous intraregional wars were fought between Soghdian states and the other states in Mawarannahr, and the Persians and the Chinese were in perpetual conflict over the region. Alexander the Great conquered the region in 328 B.C., bringing it briefly under the control of his Macedonian Empire. In the same centuries, however, the region also was an important center of intellectual life and religion. Until the first centuries after Christ, the dominant religion in the region was Zoroastrianism (see Glossary), but Buddhism, Manichaeism (see Glossary), and Christianity also attracted large numbers of followers. Uzbekistan: Samarkand History and Culture Museum
May 2003, Samarkand, Uzbekistan: The Samarkand History and Culture Museum in Uzbekistan received the Ambassador’s Cultural Preservation Fund Grant of $14,200. The grant was used to improve conditions in the hall displaying ancient Islamic manuscripts and Korans. The oldest Koran in the hall dates back to the 11th century and is written on palm leaves. The old display room was only 25 square meters, extremely humid and cold during the winter and excessively dry and hot during the summer. With the support of the Deputy Governor of Samarkand Province, a larger space, 140 square meters, was donated for the project. The grant money refurbished the gallery hall, installed proper temperature control and light systems, and purchased appropriate, museum-quality showcases. The new Koran room opened in May 2003 and was attended by local clergy and the Governor of Samarkand Province, Shavkhat Mirziyaev, who stated that the opening of the refurbished hall was “made possible thanks to the efforts of the American Embassy and the Ambassador’s Culture Preservation Fund. Cooperation with the U.S. continues not only in military areas but also in the areas of culture, education and shared values.” A $10,000 supplement was donated to digitize part of the museum collection and to purchase TV monitors to display artifacts.

Music UZBEKISTAN HISTORY For millennia Central Asia had been a center where different nations, religions and cultures communicated and enriched each other. Since the time of Zoroastr and 'Avesta' the historical and cultural influence of this unique civilization on both Asia and Europe has been great. Dariy and Alexander the Great, Chinese emperors Khan and Tan, the Sassanids and Arab Caliphs, Chenghiz Khan and Nadir Shah and later Russian tsars tried to conquer this rich land. In the period of antiquity this land of plenty, that became the homeland of the legendary Afrasiab and Siyawush, Tumaris and Spitamen, was named 'The Land of a thousand towns'. In 1997 the Uzbek government jointly with UNESCO initiated a celebration of the 2500th anniversary of Bukhara and Khiva which are among the most ancient towns in the world. In the early Middle Ages the energy and enterprise of the merchants from Sogdiana and Khorezm, Fergana and Chach was responsible for the blossoming of caravan trade along the Great Silk Road. It is difficult to overestimate the contribution of Uzbek ancestors on the development of Moslem culture. The Islamic world honors the spiritual exploits of imams al-Bukhari and al-Termizi who saved the sacred knowledge about true haddiths. For centuries the works of al-Khorezmi, al-Fargani, Ibn Sino, Beruni and Ulugbek have retained their importance for the scientific world. During Timurid's renaissance, starting from the time of Amir Temur, crafts, architecture, science and literature blossomed and became a high point of medieval Moslem culture.
