Description Located at opposite ends of the Islamic World, Central Asia and North Africa possess rich and distinct cultures. Yet in spite of these differences, women's dances share some intriguing similarities. In celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Central Asian Dance Camp, we will explore the historical, artistic and spiritual links between these two regions. Set at the heart of the Great Silk Road, Central Asia is crossed by an ancient network of caravan routes that linked China with the Mediterranean. The dances of the region reflect the rich legacy of many cultures, both indigenous and foreign. Through commerce and conquest, Iranian, Turkic, Indian, Arabic, Chinese, and Mongolian elements have entered dance styles of the region.

Uzbekistan: History
The history of Uzbekistan, its culture and statehood, foreign economic and social ties of the territory is more than 2.5 millennia. Uzbekistan's freedom loving population fought for its independence against all foreign invaders during centuries. Situated on the crossroads of the Great Silk Road, the region played an important role in the dialogue of different civilizations. its flourishing in the ancient times, then during the reign of the Samanids and Timurids is connected with the involvement of the region in the international economic interrelations. As far back as in the pre-Islamic period, Zoroastrism the world spread religious system was born on the territory of the present day Uzbekistan (in Khorezm) and became common property of all mankind. There was formed the highest technological culture of those times: town-planning, irrigation systems, armory, silk-weaving, cultivation of grain, cotton, grapes and fruits. In those times local technologies and master-craftsmen (Ustos) were highly valued and appreciated. The synthetic character is rather typical for this particular civilization: Combination of achievements gained by the Sogdians, peoples of Khorezm, Turks, India, China, Iran, Middle East and by Hellenism. The religious extension of Islam to Maverannahr, accompanied by military invasions of the Arabs in the 7-8th centuries met with the resistance from the local religious tradition, embodied in the Zoroastrism of the Sogdians and Backtrians, Buddhism of the residents of Balkh and the Upper Amudarya, and the growing authority of the Christian communities. However later on the population of the region was convinced in the great cultural and moral possibilities of Islam.

Arts and Culture Events On the Edge 11 renowned Uzbek photographers, under the guidance of a UK photojournalist, took part in our social photography development project exploring the issue of drugs in Uzbekistan with support of the USAID-funded Drug Demand Reduction Programme. The photographers followed and photographed real lives of real people affected by the drugs, from the young addicts and the families of drug-users to those undergoing traditional or alternative treatment and recovered addicts. By documenting their stories in striking images which were developed into an innovative audio-visual presentation we hope to raise awareness of young people in Uzbekistan of the danger of drugs. In 2005 the presentation and poster campaign will profile these issues in colleges, lyceums, medical institutions and relevant NGO’s in the areas of the country with the highest drug addiction rates. RANDOM DANCE FEBRUARY 2005 In February 2005 top UK choreographer Wayne McGregor ran master classes for the national and independent dance companies of Uzbekistan together with choreography students. We hope that this will lead to a joint production in the future which will be performed in other regional cities. His company Random Dance also performed in Tashkent, displaying its pioneering use of new media and technology and extraordinary record in accessing new audiences.

Uzbekistan: Samarkand History and Culture Museum
May 2003, Samarkand, Uzbekistan: The Samarkand History and Culture Museum in Uzbekistan received the Ambassador’s Cultural Preservation Fund Grant of $14,200. The grant was used to improve conditions in the hall displaying ancient Islamic manuscripts and Korans. The oldest Koran in the hall dates back to the 11th century and is written on palm leaves. The old display room was only 25 square meters, extremely humid and cold during the winter and excessively dry and hot during the summer. With the support of the Deputy Governor of Samarkand Province, a larger space, 140 square meters, was donated for the project. The grant money refurbished the gallery hall, installed proper temperature control and light systems, and purchased appropriate, museum-quality showcases. The new Koran room opened in May 2003 and was attended by local clergy and the Governor of Samarkand Province, Shavkhat Mirziyaev, who stated that the opening of the refurbished hall was “made possible thanks to the efforts of the American Embassy and the Ambassador’s Culture Preservation Fund. Cooperation with the U.S. continues not only in military areas but also in the areas of culture, education and shared values.” A $10,000 supplement was donated to digitize part of the museum collection and to purchase TV monitors to display artifacts.
