Within it are some of the oldest towns in the world, some of the Silk Road's main centres and most of the region's architectural splendours. Major Civil Unrest Travellers should monitor information regarding Eastern Uzbekistan due to recent civil unrest. Clashes between government troops and civilians in Andijan and Korasuv have claimed hundreds of lives and though the area is returning to normal, palpable tensions remain. There is still a danger of terrorist activity around the country's capital of Tashkent. Explosions in 2004 targeted the US and Israeli embassies. Police checkpoints were also attacked.

Country Info Uzbekistan Introduction Uzbekistan General Data Uzbekistan Maps Uzbekistan Culture ... Uzbekistan Time and Date Uzbekistan Culture Back to Top During the 1980s religious practice surged, transforming many aspects of Uzbek life, particularly in the towns of the Fergana Valley and other concentrations of Muslim believers. This resurgence affected the republic's cultural life through the increased activities of religious schools, neighbourhood mosques, religious orders, and religious publishing ventures and through the Islamic Renaissance Party. Over the centuries, the territory of what is now Uzbekistan has produced great scholars, poets, and writers whose heritage has envaluableed the general culture of humanity. The scholar and encyclopaedist al-Biruni, who lived in the 11th century, produced a series of geographic works about India and a wide range of writings in the natural sciences and humanities. In the 15th century the astronomer and mathematician Ulugh Beg founded a famous observatory in Samarkand. The late 15th-century scholar, poet, and writer 'Ali Shir Nava'i greatly advanced Turkic-language literature and was also a talented artist and composer.

The Sogdians, the Macedonians, the Huns, the Mongolians, the Seljuks, the Timurids and the Khanates of Samarkand, Bukhara Khiva and Khorezm all held sway here at one time or another. Central Asia really came of age with the development of the Silk Road from China to the West. Samarkand and Bukhara lay astride this, the most valuable trading route of its day. The riches that it brought were used to build fabulous mosques and madrassars, most of which were destroyed by the Mongol hordes in the 13th century. Much of the damage was repaired and new cities were built by Timur the Lame in the 14th century. Timur conquered all before him and, at its height, his empire stretched from Moscow and Baghdad and as far west as Ankara in Turkey. The history of Central Asia under Soviet rule is one of exploitation. Uzbekistan was used, as it had been under the tsars, as a place of internal exile. Stalin, fearing the power of the minorities in the Soviet Union, transported thousands of people in cattle cars into Uzbekistan and the surrounding republics. These included Germans, Koreans, Meshketi Turks, Chechens and Tatars. Part of the plan was to dilute and weaken the indigenous population. Another element of this plan was to create economies dependent on Russia: Uzbekistan was turned into a cotton monoculture and most of the product was processed north of the Urals, in Russia and Ukraine. A major consequence of this policy has been an ecological catastrophe in the Aral Sea (see

Uzbekistan Asia
CULTURE Though the nation of Uzbekistan is relatively new, gaining independence only after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, their culture is one of the most ancient and rifined in Central Asia. One particulary distinctive and well-developed aspect of Uzbek culture is their cuisine. Unlike their nomadik neighbours, the Uzbeks have had a settled civilization for centuries. Between the deserts and mountains, in the oasis and fertile valleys, they cultivated grain and domesticated livestock. The resulting abundunce of produce allowed them to express their strong tradition of hospitality, which in turn enriched their cuisine. The seasons, specifically winter and summer, greatly influence the composition of the basic menu. In the summer, fruits, vegetables, and nuts are ubiquitous. Fruits grow in abundance in Uzbekistan - grapes, melons, apricots, pears, apples, cherries, pomegranates, lemons, figs, dates. Vegetables are no less plentiful, including some lesser known species such as green redishes, yellow carrots, dozen of pumpkin and squash varieties, in addition to the usual eggplants, peppers, turnips, cucumbers and luscious tomatoes.

Khorezm, Shosh, Sogs, Ustrushan, Margion are considered to be historical places of Uzbekistan. Although most of Uzbeks are Muslims, their attitude towards different religions such as Buddhism, Christianity and Judaism is built on respect. Hospitality is one of the best traditions of Uzbek people. Everyone, irregardless of his nationality, is always treated as if he was sent by God. Besides, Uzbeks are a curious nation who likes meeting people and they are fond of communicating with the representatives of other nations. Another common pastime of Uzbeks, they like to spend their leisure time in teahouses and bazaars. The Bazaar is a place of interaction apart from its primary sense of buying and selling. And here you will see Uzbeks from all walks of life either trying to make a deal or just kicking it. If you visit Uzbekistan you should surely go to a bazaar. Its noisiness, variety, bright colors, hustle and bustle will leave unforgettable memories for good.

The Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Uzbekistan Tsuy Gotsze has expressed the same opinion: “China considers Uzbekistan the reliable partner and close friend. We are confident that the forthcoming visit will give the powerful impulse to the development of the bilateral relations, and raise them to the qualitatively new level, - said Tsuy Gotsze. – The heads of two states will discuss the wide range of the issues, concerning the trade-economic cooperation, of regional and global character. Signature of important interstate, government and interdepartmental documents is expected during the visit. China has always respected and supported the road and sovereignty, state security and development of national economy. Cooperation is closely developed between the two countries in the sphere of security as well. This takes place not only within the framework of the bilateral and multilateral relations, but also within the United Nations and Shanghai cooperation organizations”.
