Premedicine is not a major, but a set of courses required by medical schools for admission. Any major is appropriate as long as it is flexible enough to allow completion of all premedical requirements. Choose a major according to your strengths and interests. Secondly, because there are more qualified applicants than there are spaces available in medical school, a selected major should provide a basis for alternative career choices, if necessary. Required Premedical Course Work
All required courses must be taken for a letter grade. The basic course requirements of the majority of medical schools are listed below. This is also the course work covered on the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) which must be taken by the time you apply to medical school. (High school students are advised to gain a strong foundation in math, sciences and writing skills.) Chemistry (Two years of chemistry for chemistry and science majors. As a result, a Golden Rule document was created as a work of art. It consists of sixteen golden rule formulations taken from different cultures, philosophies and teachings placed on a two-page, framed diptych. Each page measures 21" x 13" (Golden Mean proportions) and was hand-printed on letterpress by Marnie Powers-Torrey and Jennifer Sorensen of the University of Utah Book Arts Program on hand-marbled Rives BFK paper. In addition, various local artists in the community contributed their time and talents to illuminate these diptychs to create unique works of art for each recipient school.

    Author: Pat Beckman
October 2001 A new goal is challenging teachers: All students, with or without disabilities, including English language learners and students who are "falling between the cracks," are to achieve in the general education curriculum. For students with disabilities, access to the general education curriculum is mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997 (IDEA '97). Successful student access to the curriculum comes about through the implementation of validated programs and procedures. It calls for a paradigm shift that is required in the law: the student (if appropriate), special and general education teachers, parents, a district representative, and representatives of other agencies necessary to best serve the student's needs are required to take part in the student's educational planning, with improved learning in the general education curriculum as a goal. This digest discusses changes needed to bring about successful student access to the curriculum-changes in attitudes and belief systems, parent involvement, pre-service training, and ongoing professional development, as well as increased support from districts and state legislators. Within this background of support from a larger educational community, teachers must work together to apply well-founded, research-based instructional practices in their classrooms.

      What Are Public Lands?
Public lands are one of America's greatest treasures. Nearly one-third of the United States of America is owned in common by its citizens. These public lands are managed for different purposes including conservation of natural areas, recreation, and resource extraction such as timber, oil and gas, grazing, and mining. Management plans for federal public lands are developed with input from citizens, local governments and the U.S. Congress. Some of the major federal land management agencies are Bureau of Land Management (BLM) , U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service (NPS), and the U.S. Forest Service. Some public lands are owned at the state level and managed by state agencies. For example, Utah Trust Lands are managed by the State of Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration.
