John Smid Executive Director and Former Homosexual Love in Action International Dear Rev. Smid I, too, operate an anti-homosexual ministry. It's a rewarding, but very difficult, way of life. Satan tempts us more than he does the average man. He knows that if he can bring us down, much of our flock will follow. That's why our eyes are constantly drawn to the manly bulges of the good and bad men we meet in our daily endeavors; it's why we often find ourselves in a darkened room where liquor is sold, sharing a drink with a man in a sailor suit; it's why we dress in leather and wear nipple rings in our weakest moments; and it's why we must make that bi-weekly journey to the man with a spatula who offers redemption through punishment for a mere fifty bucks. I understand what you're trying to do, and I think I can help. I recently came across your Refuge program's

Braille Monitor May 2004 back next contents NAC President's Job Eliminated by Barbara Pierce Lee Robinson, president of the National Accreditation Council for Agencies Serving People with Blindness or Visual Impairment (NAC) discovered the hard way on March 5, 2004, that most of the time the chickens come home to roost. Robinson has been superintendent of the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) since 1994, and the clouds have been gathering almost from the beginning. In recent months, however, he has faced growing criticism arising from the school's audit, increasing restiveness from the USDB teachers union, demands from the NFB of Utah for change in business as usual at the school, and finally the elimination of his job by the Utah Board of Education. Since he has served as chief flag waver for professional excellence and ethics during his year and more as NAC president in the accrediting body's efforts to persuade anyone who would take them seriously that NAC accreditation ensures excellence and professional responsibility in the agencies that acquire its seal of good practice, one wonders if Robinson will soon be forced in the name of common decency to resign from his NAC position. Federationists will remember that on September 10, 2001, President Maurer, James Gashel, and Peggy Elliott met with representatives of NAC, including Dr. Robinson, to explore the possibility of papering over the differences between our two organizations well enough to enable NAC to become a viable accrediting body. The NFB representatives asked the NAC executive director, Steve Hegedeos, and then NAC President Steve Obremsky, if they were aware of the allegations of student abuse at USDB that were then filling the papers in Utah. They denied knowing anything about the problems, and Robinson pooh-poohed the matter.

A Partnership for Change in General and Special Education: The Utah SIGNAL Project
Monica L. Ferguson, Utah State Office of Education - Utah SIGNAL Project Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A.
Contributions from: Bruce Schroeder, Mae Taylor Abstract The United States is facing significant economic and social pressures that are impacting our Nation's schools and teachers in the classroom. Students are more culturally and linguistically diverse than ever before. Increased numbers of students with disabilities, limited English proficiency, and students at-risk are entering our classrooms. Students are entering our schools at-risk as a result of changing family structures, and many adverse conditions at home such as lack of supervision, exposure to drugs, violence, poor housing, nutrition, and health care. In the midst of these social pressures, our country's economic transformation from an industrial nation in the early 1900's to an international information economy in the 21st century, necessitates a college degree or specialized technical training for every student in America. Students must exit our schools with knowledge and competencies in basic math and literacy, critical thinking, technological literacy, and lifelong learning to be successful. The public outcry to raise student standards to produce a skilled and knowledgeable workforce in the face of increasing diversity in the classroom, creates a challenge for preparing teachers with new knowledge and skills to address these demands (U.S. Department of Education, 1998).

BACK ENGINEERED SYSTEMS HOME Utah Schools Medal In Minimizing Maintenance By Joanna Turpin POSTED: 02/27/2002 As part of his initial evaluation of the district's equipment, energy manager Bill McLeod noticed that many of the 243 boilers in schools and related buildings were in some disrepair from age or a lack of maintenance. However, seeing a 84-year-old cast iron boiler in fine shape got him thinking about the next step. Granite School District in Salt Lake City is one of the largest school districts in the state. With 90 schools already in existence and more on the way, the district's engineering department is always looking for ways to trim the annual utility bill.

Utah Schools Get New Tool To Keep Kids Safer On Internet
National Center for Missing and Exploited Children
Friday, 7 March 2003 You may not know "Meet-Me Mack" or "Potty-Mouth Pete." But soon your children will meet these make-believe characters and learn from them about the very real dangers on the Internet. The animated characters are part of a state-of-the-art Internet safety curriculum that will be offered soon in Utah schools. The Netsmartz Workshop® has been available on the Internet at www.NetSmartz.org "Prosecuting online predators is only half the battle," said Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, whose office supervises the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC). "Our best chance of protecting Utah's children is to teach them how to avoid being a victim in the first place." The teaching materials are divided into different age groups. A cartoon character named "Clicky" tells five and six-year-olds to "never give out any of your personal information." Children between the ages of seven and 12 learn from the "WizzyWigs" about different Internet dangers. And older students will study real-life stories from teen victims. They'll also learn about other Internet topics like spamming, hacking, plagiarism, and piracy. "The classroom is an ideal setting for the NetSmartz Workshop because it educates and entertains. We are happy Utah has chosen to share the program with students of all ages," said Rick Minicucci, chief technology officer for NCMEC. "Computers are an integral part of our children's lives, and those who have used the NetSmartz Workshop report a positive change in their online behavior and increased awareness of the possible dangers.

The Creation of GSENM: A Case Study in the Politics of Land Use
Hiker on Metate Arch, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Photo © 1999 Ray Wheeler In many ways, the Grand Staircase-Escalante region is representative of the Colorado Plateau as a whole: a land at once fragile and resilient, valued by many for its economic potential in extractive industries, and by others as a place to be protected and enjoyed for its natural and aesthetic values. President Clinton's 1996 proclamation of this region as a national monument brought the contentious debate over Western wilderness to the forefront of the American agenda. In addition to the conflict between the pro-development and pro-environment camps, this region's historical politics have also been affected by a long-standing Western tradition of resistance to federal land control and interference. Since the late 19th century exodus of Mormons to the West and the struggle for Utah's statehood, tensions have run high between locals and the federal government. President Clinton's actions in September of 1996 helped draw the line between those for and those against protection of public lands, and the natural and cultural resources which they contain.
