resources Possible Action Plan for Implementing the Utah State PTA Resolution on Attention Deficit Disorders 1. Work on a plan to support the in-service of parents and educators about AD/HD
  • Get a copy of the 1991 United States Department of Education Policy Memorandum into the hands of all educators and parents. See that your school has a copy of the "Utah State Office of Education Attention Deficit Disorder Guide" (available from Department of Student at Risk). Be aware that the Utah State Office of Education has prepared in-service training materials on Attention Deficit Disorders to be used by school districts in training their teachers to understand and work with students who have AD/HD. Meet with district and school administrators about the above listed materials. Ask them what their plan is for implementing training for teachers and parents to help students with AD/HD have successful educational outcomes. Point out the recommendations from the federal government and the State Office of Education that all educators are required to have training (not just an awareness of) about the disability AD/HD. (See the Policy Memorandum and page 45 of the Utah State Attention Deficit Disorder Guide—#7 and 8 of Table 5—Recommendations and Conclusions). Invite CH.A.D.D. and/or the State Office of Education to present a workshop on AD/HD for Region, Council or Local PTA groups or combined parent and educator groups.

The thrills! The planning!
The tireless effort! Utah nurses make their mark at Winter Olympics
by Susan Trossman, RN At the XIX Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, great athletes like U.S. short track skater Apolo Anton Ohno, Canadian pairs skaters Jamie Sale and David Peltier, and Croatian giant slalom skier Janica Kostelic were front and center. But behind the scenes, there were scores of judges, Olympic officials and other event organizers, overt and covert security staff and some 170 nurse volunteers. The nurses, including RNs from the Utah Nurses Association (UNA), were among the roughly 1,400 health care personnel on hand at the Winter Games to provide acute and preventive care, as well as to lend their expertise for other tasks. UNA member Sylvia McKee was one of 170 nurses who volunteered their time and talent during the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Their efforts, however, did not just start Feb. 8 when the Olympic torch was officially lit. UNA members and other nurses were intimately involved in planning for the future health care needs of visitors to their fair city. In early 1997, a core group of UNA nurses decided they wanted RNs to take an active role in the upcoming Olympics. Realizing it was a huge undertaking, they invited representatives from nursing specialty organizations, Sigma Theta Tau International chapters, area hospitals and other practice settings to participate in a spring brainstorming summit, according to UNA member Sylvia McKee, MN, RN, BC.

Two of the students each will receive $50,000 college scholarships. All others will get $1,000 scholarships. The two top winners will be announced at a Free Spirit ceremony at the National Press Club on March 24.
The scholarship winners will be brought here to receive their awards and participate in a journalism conference which culminates with attendance at the Al Neuharth Free Spirit of the Year Award ceremony. At the event, students will have the opportunity to meet the 2003 Al Neuharth Free Spirit of the Year, Greg Mortenson, a Montana humanitarian who has dedicated his life to establishing schools in Central Asia.
The program, funded by the Freedom Forum, began in 1999 to honor Neuharth, founder of the Freedom Forum and USA TODAY. The scholarships and conference program are designed to assist students who are pursuing journalism careers and to inspire them through conference sessions with prominent media professionals. The Close Up Foundation assists the Freedom Forum in administering the program.
"We want to encourage these young people to become free-spirited journalists who dream, dare and do," Neuharth said.

Juab School District board members have some concern about the consistency, year to year, of the methods used to re-accredit schools. Superintendent Kirk Wright and board member, Delanie Hathaway, attended the last state school board meeting to complain about the way the accreditation is conducted and results compiled. "The upshot is that our patrons need to know we are certified and we will remain certified," said Leon Pexton, Juab School Board president. "We intend to resolve any issues and are pledged to maintain a high standard of education for those who attend our schools." The Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges issued the warning to nine Utah schools recently for having too few teachers, counselors, librarians or administrators for the number of students they serve per professional educator. Juab High School was one of nine Utah high schools warned to make changes or they may lose their national accreditation.

Live Long And Prosper: Media Literacy in the USA
Author: John Pungente SJ

CLIPBOARD
Vol.8 No.2 Summer 1994 It's March 16, 1994 and as the plane circles to land at the Los Angeles airport, I can see the extensive damage done by the recent earthquake. When we touch down, the pilot, after the usual announcements welcoming us to Los Angeles, says Live Long and Prosper! Whether he is referring to the earthquake or just trying to be humorous is unclear. No one pays any attention. Did the reference to Star Trek elude everyone or did they just not care? In April, 1994, President Bill Clinton signed into law The Goals 2000: Educate America Act. This bill details what USA school children ought to be taught and tested on in certain subjects. States will get federal money - $400 million - to develop performance and content standards, along with local governments and school districts. The bill encourages voluntary "content standards" in nine core subjects, English, mathematics, history, science, foreign language, civics, economics, arts and geography. The standards for Arts will include Media Literacy at all primary and secondary levels and so Goals 2000 becomes an important element in discussions on Media Literacy across the USA. California plans to introduce new legislation on media literacy in their war against television violence. Hawaii sees media literacy as something to help prevent racism. North Carolina, Florida, and New Mexico are other states which have educational legislation promoting media literacy.
