Utah State Library Spring LSTA Grant Awards
A total of $389,600 in LSTA funds was awarded this March to thirteen public libraries, two institutional libraries, five school libraries, and six academic libraries and one research library. Once again the majority of grants funded are for technology infrastructure. However, three grants were given for networked information (digitization of historical photographs and records) and five grants were awarded for a variety of outreach and collaborative projects.
A Major Grant award of $88,350 was given to the Harold B. Lee Library (Special Collections) of Brigham Young University to digitize 16,000 glass plate negatives of the George Edward Anderson collection reflecting Utah families, landscapes, and architecture from 1879-1927. These photographs will be accessible on the Internet through the Mountain West Digital Library. The Gerald R. Sherratt Library of Southern Utah University was awarded $14,416 to digitize photographs and papers of William Louis Crawford and his son, J.L. Crawford of the family’s early life homesteading in Zion Canyon and the development of the national park.

A New Look for the Utah State Library
Take a look at the new Utah State Library’s (USL) logo. Utah artist Alison Perrault created this original design. Alison spent months fine-tuning the logo and finally came up with a workable version.
“We tried many variations and attitudes that revolved around libraries but determined that the USL did not fit into the library category,” says Perrault. “The USL offers such a wide variety of services that benefit patrons across the state that we had to develop an icon all its own.” The letters are bold and fit tightly together like books on a shelf. The letter “U” is reminiscent of the shape of Utah. The color is a wash of crisp blue to represent the Utah sky in our state’s high altitude and the dots stand for USL in Braille and represents our patrons and communities who use the State Library for the Blind and Disabled. You’ll be seeing the new Utah State Library logo on all of the USL publications.

KIDS AND TEACHERS ARE NOT LAB RATS!
ROBINA SUWOL, 25.07.2005 20:41 AB 405 California law allows pesticide products that do not have full registration and outstanding data requirements to be applied on school sites. This glaring oversight in the law may expose school children, teachers and other members of the public to unknown health risks. Pesticides contain toxic substances, many of which have a detrimental effect on human health and the environment and, in particular, have a developmental effect on children. Children are more susceptible to hazardous impacts from
