INTRODUCTION
Figure 1. Printed cover for the Digital Geologic Map of Utah CD. As Geographic Information System (GIS) technology becomes a primary tool for resource planning and research among federal, state, and local governments and educational institutions, the pressure to convert existing maps to GIS data is great. The 1:500,000-scale Geologic Map of Utah compiled by Lehi F. Hintze and published by the Utah Geological (and Mineral) Survey (UGS) in 1980 has served for twenty years as the most current geologic map of the entire state. Requests to have this map converted to a digital form have been more numerous than for any other UGS map. The Digital Geologic Map of Utah, released on compact disc (figure 1) is, in general, identical to the 1980 published map; however, it contains some minor revisions. In addition, this digital release supercedes a digital version of the Geological Map of Utah distributed in 1995 by the geography department at Utah State University, Logan, Utah, which was considered temporary and incomplete.

INTRODUCTION
Most geological surveys are experienced in preparing geographic information system (GIS) data for their key geology-based customers. However, the GIS world is much bigger than just the geologic community. In fact, geologic data are not even considered one of the key layers in most federal, state, and local GIS databases. In our discussions with other digital geologic data producers, we find that geological surveys often fail to be an active part of broad-based GIS consortiums. This commonly results in missed opportunities to secure funding to produce and maintain geologic data as well as missed opportunities to assure that geology is properly included in government and land-manager GIS databases. These databases are generally the primary source of geographic information, including geology based, that are used in important policy and land-management decisions that significantly impact the general public, as well as the geologic community.

MODULE OVERVIEW
This module introduces students to the geography, geology, ecology, and history of The Greater Salt Lake Ecoregion Saline lakes are some of the most unusual, and misunderstood, physical regions of the world. It is often assumed that these are "dead " environmentslike the DEAD SEA of Israel and Jordan. In fact, saline lakes in general and The Great Salt Lake in particular, supports a tremendous diversity of life. The Great Salt Lake Ecoregion is also one of North America's fastest growing urban regions. Along the Wasatch Front can be found such rapidly growing cities such as Ogden Sundance/Provo and Orem, Salt Lake City and its suburbs. And of course, in 2002 the region hosted the Winter Olympics This makes the region an ideal place to study human-environment interaction and the human dimensions of global environmental change Whether you're visiting this web site for fun or study, we hope you have an enjoyable and stimulating trip

In the state of Utah, the Utah Automated Geographic Reference Center (AGRC) was established in 1981 and formalized by legislation in 1991 to promote the use of GIS. As part of its responsibilities, AGRC is the administrative steward and repository for Utah's State Geographic Information Database (SGID), the state's enterprisewide GIS data library. The SGID database consists of approximately 180 thematic GIS data layers that describe land use, demographic, environmental, infrastructure, historical, and political features throughout the state. These layers are provided free of charge to government agencies, the private sector, educators, and the general public via the Internet. In addition to providing access to the SGID's online clearinghouse, AGRC coordinates and participates in many cooperative data collection and maintenance partnerships involving federal, state, and local agencies. Dennis Goreham, manager of AGRC, states, "As the state of Utah moves toward an enterprise solution for all facets of the information technology field, managers are looking to the GIS implementation at AGRC as a successful model to follow."

Get rich...with a geography degree?
By Catherine Callister Published: Thursday, November 18, 2004 Geography is fast becoming a lucrative and diverse field with job opportunities in careers ranging from health care to forestry, said a panel of experts Wednesday.
A lot of the growth in the geography field is the result of a fairly new technology called Geographic Information Systems.
"Geographic Information Systems is about taking all the data we used to put in paper maps and putting it in computer databases," said Harvey Miller, professor of geography. "We can capture, store, analyze and communicate information about literally anything that takes place on or near the surface of the earth."
The U.S. Department of Labor referred to geotechnology as one of the three most important emerging and evolving fields, along with nanotechnology and biotechnology.

Helping Your Child Learn Geography - October 1996
Location: Position on the Earth's Surface
Look at a map or globe. Where are places located? Every place has a "global address" that tells exactly where in the world it's located, just as your home has a street address. There are two numbers in a global addressa number for latitude and one for longitude . If you know these numbers and how to use them, you can find any place in the world and give its absolute location . (For definitions, see the glossary at the end of this booklet.) Why are things located in particular places and how do these places influence our lives? Location can describe how one place relates to another. For example, the Panama Canal was cut across an extremely narrow strip of land in Central America. It provides a shipping lane between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, eliminating the need for long, dangerous journeys around South America.
Activities
Learning Direction
  • To help young children learn location, make sure they know the name of their town and their street address, and that they can describe the building and neighborhood in which they live. Then, when you talk about other places, they have something of their own with which to compare.
  • Children need to understand positional words. Teach children words like "above'' and "below" in a natural way when you talk with them or give them directions. When picking up toys to put away, say, "Please put your toy into the basket on the "right,'' or "Put the green washcloth into the drawer." Right and left are as much directional terms as north, south, east, and west. Other words that describe such features as color, size, and shape are also important.
