Wyoming Lesson Plans Please note that with regard to lesson plans dealing with anthropology, archaeology, indigenous people, ancient civilizations, history, etc, there may be some cross-over and blurring of lines between the topics. For example, a lesson plan dealing with archaeology is automatically dealing with an anthropological subject. A lesson plan dealing with indigenous people is also automatically dealing with anthropology and any of them may, or may not, be dealing with history or ancient civilizations. While every attempt will be made to keep the topic lines as 'clean' as possible, be aware this may not always be possible. Appropriate grade or age levels are included with the lesson plans. The number of lesson plans available online for this topic is enormous. This site can not and does not index all lesson resources. That would be impossible, as sites appear and disappear with astonishing rapidity. The following provides some idea of what is available and will hopefully be a good starting point. Helping Your Child Learn Geography - October 1996
3 Different Maps of Salt Lake City, Utah
Shaded Relief Map
You could use the shaded relief map to find the locations of cities and towns. But, most important, it shows the shape of the landmountains, valleys, rivers, and lakes. Using the legend for this map, you can also find out which towns are the largest and which are the smallest.
Road Map
Road maps show people how they can travel from one place to another. They show some physical features, such as mountains and rivers, and political features, such as cities and towns. A road map also shows you which are the local roads and which are the main highways.
Topographic Map
This topographic map shows a small area of Salt Lake City. Topographic maps use contour lines to show elevation (height above sea level). Contour lines join points of equal elevation above a specified reference, such as sea level. Think of a contour line as an imaginary line on the ground that takes any path necessary to maintain constant elevation. Using the legend for this map, you can locate schools and churches. People frequently use topographic maps when hiking. Builders use topographic maps to figure out where to put buildings and roads. There's a topographic map like this for every part of the United States, including one for where you live. Maps and text adapted from teacher packet ``What Do Maps Show?''

Utah Centennial Passport by Bicycle
What is Utah Quest!
Utah History is taught in the fourth grade and Utah Studies in the seventh grade throughout Utah. Utah Quest! is a program using the Utah Centennial Passport and cycling to bring interest in geography and the history of Utah to the students in Granite School District. It is hoped that the students of other school districts in the 29 counties of Utah will become involved and learn more about Utah's counties.
Pat King, who works in the Instructional Technology department for Granite School District, has spent many years backpacking or riding his bike throughout Utah. While working in one of the schools he was shown a Centennial Passport and thought it would be fun to drive to all of the counties. But, being a person who likes challenges, he decided to ride by bicycle to all of the counties instead. It is hope that through his photography and details of each of his rides that he will help to make geography and history more enjoyable to the students of Utah.

The Nation Needs
The National Map USGS Role Strategies ... Thank You
The Nation Needs The National Map
Governments depend on a common set of base information that describes the Earth's surface and locates features. They use this information as a tool for economic and community development, land and natural resource management, and health and safety services. Federal functions ranging from emergency management and defense to environmental protection rely on this information. Private industry, nongovernmental organizations, and individual citizens also use the same geographic data. Geographic information underpins an increasingly large part of the Nation's economy.
One of the lessons learned from the tragedies of September 11, 2001, is that complete and current public domain base geographic information must be immediately available coast to coast and border to border. The National Map will ensure access to this information. Return to Top
A New Vision and Commitment
The National Map is a new perspective on geographic base information. By sharing its vision, the USGS affirms its dedication to refocusing and reinvigorating its efforts to meet the Nation's needs for this critical information. The USGS will consolidate and redefine its component mapping activities and seek creative partnerships to ensure that current, complete, consistent, and accurate information is available and useful to the Nation. It will take sustained commitment to achieve the full goals of The National Map vision. In the near future, the USGS and its partners will concentrate on improving data and map content and currentness for high priority areas, with emphasis on building long-term partnerships, and on improving data access and dissemination capabilities.

Geographer, professor at the U. of C. By Glenn Jeffers
Tribune staff reporter
Published January 1, 2004 By the time he was 25, Chauncy D. Harris was working on his fourth degree and making a name for himself as an urban geographer at the University of Chicago. But one night in 1939, Mr. Harris darted across the city looking for his future wife, Edith, who had taken the train in from New York.
"My mother failed to tell him which station," said their daughter, Margaret. "Fortunately, he got the right one and met my mother at the train station. Otherwise I wouldn't be here."
The future Rhodes Scholar and his wife would travel together through the years, visiting Europe many times, as Mr. Harris became a pioneering geographer of the Soviet Union and a world-renowned professor at the U. of C., family and colleagues said.
Mr. Harris, 89, died of cancer Friday, Dec. 26, in his Hyde Park home, family members said.
Mr. Harris was born in Logan, Utah, where his father, Franklin Stewart Harris, was an agronomy professor at Utah State University. The family moved to Provo, Utah, after Franklin Harris became president of Brigham Young University in 1921.

This page offers all kinds of links on the subject of Utah wilderness. As a matter of fact, this page is an attempt to collect and categorize almost everything on the Internet dealing with Utah wilderness. This seemingly impossible task will be greatly facilitated with your help! If you have additional links or comments, send them to: comments
    How to use this page
This collection of links is arranged into categories, and the categories are arranged alphabetically. Topics within categories are arranged alphabetically, unless noted otherwise. The intent of this list is to offer the Utah wilderness advocate a set of references and links as a starting point. The advantage of using this page as opposed to a search engine is that (presumably) the references are categorized, as well as filtered for content. In a few cases, references are duplicated because they fall within several different categories.
This collection began as research, and evolved into its present form. It is still evolving. I plan keep this list as current as possible, but make no warranties as to the validity of the links, or the contents of pages that are linked to. Happy surfing!
