Back to Library Information Campus Library Policies Section: 5-Student Services Policy No: 31 Approved: 4/26/96 Revised: 3/16/00 Revised: 2/01/02 5-31 LIBRARY 31.1 It is the official policy of the College to concentrate its library resources and services in the central library to maintain the quality and integrity of the central library, prevent unnecessary duplication of library materials, and decentralization of library services. 31.2 The establishment of independent libraries for departments is discouraged. Exceptions can be made only by approval of the president and only after they have been reviewed by the director of the library, the Faculty Library Committee, Academic Council, and College Council. 31.3 The function of the Browning Library is to provide students and faculty with sufficient information and materials (both print and electronic format) to support the curriculum of the college; to provide professional reference service to assist the students with their research and information needs; and to provide an environment conducive to study. A secondary function is to provide general information, recreational reading, and sufficient depth and richness of materials insofar as it does not deprive students of needed tools to succeed in their academic pursuits.

Categories of Material Trails to Utah and the Pacific: Diaries and Letters, 1846-1869 incorporates 49 diaries, in 59 volumes, of pioneers trekking westward across America to Utah, Montana, and the Pacific between 1847 and the meeting of the rails in 1869. In addition to the diaries, the collection includes 43 maps, 82 photographs and illustrations, and 7 published guides for immigrants. Stories of persistence and pain, birth and death, God and gold, trail dust and debris, learning, love, and laughter, and even trail tedium can be found in these original "on the trail" accounts. The collection tells the stories of Mormon pioneer families and others who were part of the national westering movement, sharing trail experiences common to hundreds of thousands of westward migrants. The source materials are drawn from the collections of Brigham Young University, members of the Utah Academic Libraries Consortium, and other archival institutions in Utah, Nevada, and Idaho. A picture is worth a thousand words when reviewing for an art history test. The pictures are available on a new database called ArtStore, but Marriott Library can't afford it because it has to pay $1,500 for a year's subscription to a magazine-not for one magazine, but hundreds. Although they're academic journals and not magazines, the subscriptions are sometimes more than magazines themselves. Next year, the subscription price for libraries could spike by 10 percent, forcing the library to pay $150 more for the same journal-money that comes out of student tuition and taxes. The price of academic journals has been rising drastically the last eight years, and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight, says Margaret Landesman, head of collection development at the library.
