UT Mormons, members of the Church of Latter-Day Saints, make up a large percentage of the population of Utah. Utah became the 45th state of the Union in 1896. The golden spike completing the first transcontinental railroad line was driven at Promontory, Utah, in 1869, leading to a further influx of settlers. Utah is well-known for its snow-covered mountains and beautifully colored canyons. The wind and rain have formed rocks into many arches and natural bridges. The Great Salt Lake is the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River; its waters are saltier than ocean water. The state's forests, mountains, lakes, and rivers are excellent for boating, fishing, hunting, sightseeing, skiing and swimming. One of Utah's most interesting places to visit is Mormon Temple Square in Salt Lake City. Bundesstaat. Der goldene Schienennagel, mit dem die erste transkontinentale Eisenbahnlinie beendet wurde, wurde in Promontory, Utah, eingeschlagen. Dies führte zu weiteren Einwanderungen.

Setting
Canyonlands National Park is a wild and primitive desert region between Capitol Reef and Arches national parks of Utah. It runs about 65 miles north-to-south and about 25 miles east-to-west, encompassing 559 square miles (337,570 acres). It is located in the heart of the Colorado Plateau in southeastern Utah and is this state's largest national park. The confluence of the Colorado and Green Rivers is the centerpiece of of the Canyonlands, cutting through horizontal layers of sedimentary rock, and dividing the park into three topographically distinct regions Island in the Sky, The Needle and The Maze in addition to the unattached Horseshoe Canyon Unit northwest of the main park. Outside the park's boundaries, three jagged mountain ranges abruptly break the pattern of flat-topped canyon landscape. To the east rise the 12,000-foot La Sal Mountains, to the south the Abajo Mountain and to the west the Henry Mountains.
Climate
Canyonlands receives an average of 9.2 inches of precipitation a year. Most of this moisture comes in the form of melting winter snows. The high elevations in the park, 4,000 to 6,000 feet, and the snow create what many ecologists call a cold or high desert. The dryness of the air creates a situation where more moisture could be evaporated from plants and the ground than actually accumulates during the year.

Setting
Bryce Canyon National Park is about 80 miles northeast of Zion National Park but is starkly different in climate, topography, geology and scenery. Bryce sits atop the Paunsagunt Plateau of southwestern Utah between the Markagunt Plateau to the west and Aquarius Plateau to the east. At its widest point, it is about 5 miles east to west and runs 20 miles north to south. Instead of looking up at sandstone formations as at Zion, one is looking down along the Paunsagunt Fault onto much different geological features, primarily hoodoos, formed from the erosional action on shales and sandstone of the Claron formation.
Climate
At 8,000 feet where the visitor center is located, it is 1,000 feet higher than Zion, with a cooler, moister climate. Much of the area's precipitation comes as afternoon thundershowers during mid to late summer. Spring and fall weather is variable. Cold winter days are offset by high altitude sun and dry climate. Winter nights are sub-freezing. During some winters, Alaskan cold fronts descend on the Colorado Plateau bringing temperatures as low as 30 degrees below zero. The area can have significant snow October through March; annual snowfall averages 100 inches.
The high altitude sun can burn in any season. Hats, long sleeves and sunscreen are recommended all year.

    Shaded Relief Map
You could use the shaded relief map to find the locations of cities and towns. But, most important, it shows the shape of the landmountains, valleys, rivers, and lakes. Using the legend for this map, you can also find out which towns are the largest and which are the smallest.
    Road Map
Road maps show people how they can travel from one place to another. They show some physical features, such as mountains and rivers, and political features, such as cities and towns. A road map also shows you which are the local roads and which are the main highways.
    Topographic Map
This topographic map shows a small area of Salt Lake City. Topographic maps use contour lines to show elevation (height above sea level). Contour lines join points of equal elevation above a specified reference, such as sea level. Think of a contour line as an imaginary line on the ground that takes any path necessary to maintain constant elevation. Using the legend for this map, you can locate schools and churches. People frequently use topographic maps when hiking. Builders use topographic maps to figure out where to put buildings and roads. There's a topographic map like this for every part of the United States, including one for where you live. Maps and text adapted from teacher packet

Deseret News staff writer More than a century ago, pioneer settlers in Cache Valley's Wellsville and Hyrum resolved a water-rights dispute by throwing rotten vegetables at each other.
Other Utah water conflicts were not resolved so amicably.
"Water is one of the most political and most volatile issues in the West," says Sen. Howard Stephenson, R-Draper, who found Utah to be no different after recently trying and failing to prompt a fundamental re-evaluation of the state's water policy.
Deseret News graphic found himself battling an army of water lobbyists, water districts and the Utah Farm Bureau.
Under withering pressure, Stephenson dropped plans to revamp water taxation policy, instead asking only that a task force look at the complicated issues. The bill authorizing the task force never made it out of committee.
"There are so many people who feel their ox might be gored by even an examination" of issues surrounding water rates and conservation, he said, acknowledging his idea was plagued by rumors and innuendo.

Subject: geomorphology as a field of study
I have a question for everyone. What do you say to the geologists who claim that there is no longer a need for the study of geomorphology, that it is nothing more than physical geology? Our school is in the process of a semester conversion, and the geomorphology course was a casulty of the process. Geology dropped it, but I was successful in adding it to the geography curriculum. There seems to be no small degree of antipathy toward the subject among the geologists here on campus. So, I wondered how others have handled the question. Thanks, Paul R. Larson Paul R.
