Location Centrally located in the Intermountain West, Utah is bordered by all of the mountain states except Montana and is often called the "Crossroads of the West." Utah's landform is divided among three major physiographic provinces: the Great Basin or Basin and Range province, the Colorado Plateau province, and the Rocky Mountain province. The largest of the provinces in Utah is the Colorado Plateau. It has been described as a land of layered, flat-lying sedimentary rock. The story of the earth's movement and history can often be read in the tilt and erosion of the layered strata. Within Utah's portion of the Colorado Plateau are five national parks, six national monuments, a national recreation area, and several state parks. It has one of the largest deposits of hydrocarbons in the world-coal, oil, oil shale, tar sands, gilsonite, and natural gas. It also has significant amounts of uranium.

The first known non-Indian discovery of the lake was that of the Dominguez and Escalante expedition of 1776. Fur trappers discovered the lake in the 1820s, with Jedediah Smith, William Ashley and Etienne Provost reputed to have visited it during 1824 and 1825. John C. Fremont visited Utah Lake in 1844 as he returned from California. Mormon explorers visited the lake in 1847, and in 1849 the Mormons began using the lake. A fishing party of six men was sent to the lake by Brigham Young in January of that year, and later that spring Provo (named for Provost) became the first permanent settlement along the lake's shore. Richard H. Jackson

Utah Partnership Project
Summary of Project
This project is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the State of Utah Automated Geographic Reference Center (AGRC) to test The National Map concept for supporting critical transportation data needed in emergency response, census requirements, and other Federal, State, and local governmental functions for an urban county and a rural county in the State. It will demonstrate the utility and ability of The National Map to meet a real, critical need in preventing or reducing loss of life and property damage related to emergency response. Project objectives were to develop and integrate transportation datasets, develop and test a process for updating and maintaining transportation data, and develop and test software for interfacing and serving transportation information over the Web, including the development of derivative products and capabilities. This project will directly benefit Utah by encouraging the use of locally generated data that are the best available, fostering improvements in the accuracy of census data, and providing a model that relies on increased coordination between Federal, State, and local agencies. Additionally, the U.S. Census Bureau will use this up-to-date transportation dataset as part of its modernization program in preparation for the 2010 census.
Project Data Description
This project focused on compiling and integrating 1:24,000-scale transportation data for one urban county and one rural county in Utah. The collection of data for this project was limited to those datasets that either already existed or would become available during the project's time frame. Collection of new data was limited to those efforts that were underway by local entities through grants received and administered by the Utah AGRC.

Get rich...with a geography degree?
By Catherine Callister Published: Thursday, November 18, 2004 Geography is fast becoming a lucrative and diverse field with job opportunities in careers ranging from health care to forestry, said a panel of experts Wednesday.
A lot of the growth in the geography field is the result of a fairly new technology called Geographic Information Systems.
"Geographic Information Systems is about taking all the data we used to put in paper maps and putting it in computer databases," said Harvey Miller, professor of geography. "We can capture, store, analyze and communicate information about literally anything that takes place on or near the surface of the earth."
The U.S. Department of Labor referred to geotechnology as one of the three most important emerging and evolving fields, along with nanotechnology and biotechnology.

Salt Lake City
World Facts Index United States With its wide city-center streets, the busy coming-and-going of the new TRAX light rail system, and the constant bustle of new construction, Salt Lake City has an atmosphere of expansion and growth. Situated at the base of the magnificent Wasatch Mountains, the city is booming economically and evolving at a rapid rate. While most business travelers limit their activities to the city center, many tourists come for the outstanding outdoor recreation found throughout the Salt Lake Basin. The City Center The downtown area is a mixture of contrasts that situates the most modern of sports arenas, the Delta Center, across the street from the Devereaux Mansion, a fine old Victorian mansion that is now The Chart House restaurant. The stately Temple Square is flanked by high-rise office buildings and the modern Crossroads Plaza shopping center. Brigham Young's Beehive House creates an oasis of the 19th century across the street from office towers of the 21st century. Arranged on a logical and understandable grid pattern with Temple Square at its center, all addresses in the city can be found with little effort. Capitol Hill in Salt Lake City is truly a hill! A walk from downtown up State Street to the Utah State Capitol offers a sampling of the grandeur of the homes of mining and financial barons, several of which - notably Wolfe Krest Bed and Breakfast and The Inn on Capitol Hill - that provide a sense of Salt Lake City as it was at the turn of the 20th century. The private homes on the hill also offer an eclectic blend of Victorian, Italinate, and 'wealthy pioneer' architectural styles. Just to the west of the Utah State Capitol is the Pioneer Memorial Museum that also provides a sense of life in the 'Beehive State' in its early days.

What is Geography?
Geography, at the start of the new century, is a comparatively small but lively and challenging academic discipline providing a distinctive approach to many of today's societal problems and issues: economic and social inequality; cost and quality of health care delivery systems, urban and suburban growth; efficient transport systems, patterns of food supply and hunger, health and disease, education and child labor; environmental and pollution problems; economic impacts of natural catastrophies (floods, earthquakes), appropriate utilization of water and energy resources; local and locational repercussions of new communications technologies; the activities and behaviors of transnational corporations; and many more.
The Geography Department has over the years developed a strong emphasis on Economic and Business Geography. [See also:
