Institutions Bryce Canyon, History and Administrative Plans Monthly Narrative Reports (File A2823) for the years 1956 to 1958 contribute data germane to the interrelated themes of Bryce Canyon's movement toward administrative independence from Zion, and the inception of the park's MISSION 66 program. By extension, Monthly Narrative Reports for the early 1960s say much about the recent construction phase. Data peripheral to this issue is also found in File A2827, "other reports." For a time reports were submitted to the Superintendent on a monthly basis by the park's Maintenance Supervisor and Administrative Assistant. Bryce Canyon's comprehensive and well catalogued photograph collection was canvassed. Many illustrations in the study were taken from it. Denver Federal Record Center Accession 66-A-691 contains seminal documents for the history of grazing at Bryce. Superintendent's Monthly Reports for the years 1942 to 1949 (Accession 55-A-269) reveal the character of the war years and the post-war period. The disposition of the park's Civilian Conservation Corps campsite became clear after a perusal of scattered documents in Accessions 52-A-100 and 55-A-177. Both Accessions 66-A-98 and 74-A-16 yielded fragmentary but useful information for a better understanding of the MISSION 66 program. Denver Public Library, Western History Collection

How a state official and university professor used CITYgreen to teach students about the value of trees and forests. When students at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City begin the fall semester, several thousand will be living in newly constructed dormitories. But as they settle in, few will know how the design of those buildings educated more than a dozen students about environmentally friendly planning. In April 1998 five graduates and 10 undergraduates signed up for Geography 593, a new course that helped them appreciate the environmental challenges in designing urban landscapes that retain soil quality, manage stormwater runoff, control pollution, reduce energy consumption, and use solar energy to cool

Assessing Transportation Safety and Hazards May Aid
Homeland Security Effort Media Contacts June 24, 2002 Four University of Utah geography professors are using satellite imagery and geographic information systems (GIS) - computerized geographic maps -to assess the safety of and hazards to transportation networks in and around Salt Lake City. Their collaborative findings will be relevant in solving urgent public policy and safety problems, but may also be useful in addressing the geographic dimensions of terrorism - the damage or destruction to terrain, bridges or roadways.
"Before 9-11, we studied transportation accessibility," notes Harvey J. Miller, University of Utah professor of geography. "Since 9-11, we've been looking at the vulnerability of transportation routes."
Miller and University of Utah geography department colleagues George F. Hepner, Thomas J. Cova and Richard R. Forster are collaborating on the four-year project, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The University, along with the University of New Mexico, George Washington University and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, comprise the National Consortium on Remote Sensing in Transportation, the larger group studying the topic.

This spectacular cliff-and-canyon landscape and wilderness is full of the unexpected, including the astonishing span of Kolob Arch, the world's longest at 310 feet. Zion is a showcase of geology. Geologic processes have played a very visible role in shaping the terrain here, where an arid climate and sparse vegetation allow the exposure of large expanses of bare rock and thus reveal geologic history in a way not possible in wetter lands clothed in vegetation. Mule deer, golden eagles, mountain lions and many other desert-adapted species inhabit the 229 square miles of Zion.

    http://www.cc.utah.edu/~joseph/geography/PaulBunyanWoodPile.html
    Paul Bunyan's Wood Pile
Paul Bunyan's Woodpile is a geological formation that resembles several large piles of cut wood. It is actually a volcanic formation of basalt that fit together roughly as hexagonal columns running horizontally.
Photo from Frank Beckwith, "Millard and Nearby", p. 128, Printed by Art City Publishing Company, Springvile, Utah, 1947. The site is roughly 83 miles south of Salt Lake City, Utah. The most direct way to get there is to go to Redwood Road (Utah highway 68) which is 1700 West running through the entire Salt Lake Valley. Travel south on Redwood Road into Utah County, past Camp Williams, west of Utah Lake, until you get to the town of Elberta. Then turn right (west) on U.S. Highway 6 and follow the road through Eureka and south as the road turns towards Delta, Utah. The turn off to Paul Bunyan's Wood Pile will be a little before the mile marker 125. The Woodpile is on the top of a hill near Jericho, Utah (Jericho is uninhabited, just an old railroad stop). The access road is dirt, often heavily rutted, and at times impassible, particularly when the soil is wet, except for four-wheeled drive vehicles. There is a road sign for Paul Bunyan's Wood Pile along U.S. Highway route 6, about 3.2 miles north of the turnoff to the Jericho Sand Dunes (Jericho road), or 14.8 miles south of Eureka Utah. The access road winds east and northeast for about 3.2 miles until you reach a fenced area near a spring (Riley Springs on the map).On the map, the black lined squares represent 1 mile square. This map is from the BLM map for Lynndyl Utah.

      Geography
Utah has two dissimilar regions sharply divided by the Wasatch Range (part of the Rocky Mts.), which runs generally south from the Idaho border. To the east of the Wasatch rise high mountains and irregular plateaus; along its western foothills lie the major cities of Utah, while farther west is the Great Basin. In the northeast the snowcapped Uinta Mts. reach the state's highest elevation in Kings Peak (13,528 ft/4,123 m). The dissected Colorado Plateau stretches southward, rugged and largely uninhabitable except in isolated river valleys. Deep, tortuous canyons cut by the Colorado River and its tributaries impede travel but create vistas of remarkable grandeur. Western Utah, part of the Great Basin, was once submerged beneath an extensive Pleistocene lake, Lake Bonneville. For many thousands of years the water level in the lake fluctuated, finally subsiding entirely to leave behind a salt-strewn desert, wide expanses of arid but nonalkaline soil, and a series of lakes. Great Salt Lake , the largest of these, has through evaporation reached a concentration of mineral salts several times that of the ocean. Gulls, pelicans, and blue herons are found around the lake and on its islands. Much of the lake shore is bordered by mud and salt flats. The haze-covered Oquirrh Mts., rising south of the lake, dip to form pleasant beaches at the water's edge, then emerge as islands within the lake and rise again in the Promontory Mts. on the northern shore.
