Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one. Malcolm S. Forbes Social Studies Frequently Asked Questions The following are frequently asked questions and are broken up by category. Becoming Highly Qualified Professional Development Becoming Highly Qualified A: Highly Qualified (HQ) is a term used to define whether teachers have met specific teacher professional development standards. It is a term that is most closely associated with the provisions in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), more commonly referred to as No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Quite often excellent, veteran teachers with years of experience and wonderful pedagogy are still not deemed HQ under the provisions of this law. Nevertheless, there are a number of steps teachers can take to become HQ in social studies. Q: Who determines whether teachers are HQ? A: School districts are responsible for this determination. Teachers with questions about their HQ status should consult with the district administrator in charge of compliance. Q: What is the connection between Highly Qualified under NCLB and endorsements?

Utah Geography- Much of Utah's appeal comes from its geologic and geographic wonders. The Rocky Mountains and the Colorado Plateau lie in the eastern and southern parts of the state, with the Colorado and Green rivers and the San Rafael Swell (an immense uplift of stone) adding to the rugged appearance of the area. To the north lies the Basin and Range region, which includes the Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake. Utah Map Search for Accomodations in these Utah Cities Blanding Provo Vernal Moab ...

An early explorer described the land that became Utah as "a world of grandeur." It is, indeed, a place of dramatic and colorful contrasts from snow-capped mountains to red rock canyons located at the center of the eight-state Mountain region in the western United States. Perhaps the state's most distinctive geographic feature is Great Salt Lake, the second saltiest body of water in the world and the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River. To its west lies the desolate Great Salt Lake Desert, a stark contrast to the lush agricultural valleys of Northeast Utah. Utah's two major rivers are the Green River, which flows south into the famous Colorado River, which then flows southwest toward the Grand Canyon.

Clark County School District One major criticism of the current state of education in the United States is that American students are ignorant of geography. In the past few years, however, a serious commitment has been made by National Geographic Society and Teachers to educate our students in the science of our planet. The National Geographic Society (NGS) and the National Council for Geographic Education have been working diligently in the past decade to enable our students to compete internationally in the area of geography. In 1984, GUIDELINES IN GEOGRAPHIC EDUCATION: FIVE THEMES, was published. The National Geographic Society (NGS), under the leadership of Gil Grovsner, founded the Geographic Education Program in 1985. This program marked the beginning of the NGS Alliance Network, a consortium of educational programs which was to be established in each state. As of 1994, all 50 states as well as Puerto Rico and Canada were members of the Alliance Network, working particularly with the unit known as the Geography Alliance. These state alliances are key players in the geography movement; their goal is to train educators to successfully teach geography. Each year, workshops and conferences and Alliance Summer Geography Institutes are held throughout the United States. The State Alliances have expanded K-12 teacher geographic and environmental horizons. The NGS 1994 WORKSHOP ON WILDERNESS, held in Portland, Oregon, drew 104 participants nationwide who had the unique opportunity to visit several wilderness areas. This experience provided an abundance of educational information, which, it was hoped, would be shared with fellow teachers. The Workshop was specifically designed to train the teachers to implement a plan in each state to promote Geography Awareness Week. The theme was "Keeping an Eye on the Wilderness."
