Kansas, Utah projects parallel
By Mike Caron Saturday, September 6, 2003 Naturalist Terry Tempest Williams believes the South Lawrence Trafficway travesty closely resembles Legacy Parkway in Utah. Gov. Mike Leavitt wants that parkway built through Great Salt Lake wetlands. Williams loves the wetlands like a member of her own family. Road-builders and developers dismiss such feelings as mere sentimentality. In her book, "Refuge" (1991) Williams describes how she felt as both her mother and her beloved wetlands faced death. Anyone doubting Native American claims that the Haskell-Baker Wetlands are a part of their family might comprehend this cultural gulf better after reading "Refuge." The Utah Department of Transportation would replace wetlands paved for Legacy Parkway with lots of land and a new nature preserve. Dismissing skepticism from environmentalists, Gov. Leavitt declared the future wetland would be even better. Terry Tempest Williams calls this "greenwashing." Former Kansas Gov. Bill Graves, now the trucking industry's chief lobbyist, kept a low profile while the Kansas Department of Transportation pressed for a trafficway that could enormously impact how interstate haulers route their big rigs through this region. Graves, a close Republican ally of then National Governor's Assn. chairman Leavitt, likely borrowed the notion to "greenwash" the 32nd Street South Lawrence Trafficway route as good for Mother Nature.

THE POLITICAL MARK MARYBOY
- Ken Sleight, Sept. 1998 San Juan Commissioner Mark Maryboy daily faces the challenges of his job amid growing political controversy. He has worked feverishly to secure and protect the rights of Native Americans and the poor. But he is being buffeted on all sides. The problems encountered are extremely difficult in themselves, but in San Juan County a serious breakdown in the structure and process of the San Juan government has occurred. The race issue remains San Juan County's deepest and most enduring problem. Despite all efforts to increase understanding and expand opportunities, Indian people and the whites still lead separate lives, Tension and hostility exists; racial disorder has divided our people. But who is this Mark Maryboy who must tackle such humongous issues and search for just solutions? I admit to a bias of sorts in the following account as we have worked together on many issues and have become good friends. The reader must analyze for himself the information I now record. Maryboy was born on December 10, 1955 at St. Christopher's mission near Bluff, Utah. He was the fifth of eight children, all of whom were raised in a Navajo hogan. This setting was of significance to me as I had previously visited St. Christopher's back in 1953 and chatted extensively with Father Liebler.

ALASKA’S UNIQUE DROPOUT PROBLEMS Ann Ousterhout Mrs. Ann Ousterhout received her B.A. in psychology at the Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. She holds two master’s degrees from the University of Hawaii, in education administration and in general education. She has been a teacher and counselor in Alaskan schools since 1959, and currently is teaching English at the University of Alaska in Juneau The history of education among Alaskan Indians has involved some unique features, when compared to that of American Indians in other sections of the United States. For one thing, Alaska’s Indians, Eskimos and Aleuts have never been relocated to reservations, nor removed from lands they once occupied. Nevertheless, they have been included in such services as the federal government has provided to other American aborigines, and these have been largely in the form of health and educational services. By mandate of the First Organic Act of 1884, the Secretary of the Interior was to provide education for the children of Alaska "without reference to race" (see Note 1). Locally controlled schools date from the early 1900s, particularly from the Nelson Act of 1905, which allowed the establishment of schools

Indian students abused, suit says
SIOUX FALLS (SD)
Sioux Falls Argus Leader
From Staff Reports
published: 4/12/2003 Six members of Sioux tribes have filed a lawsuit seeking $25 billion in damages from the federal government for the alleged mental, physical and sexual abuse of students at Native American boarding schools nationwide.
The class action lawsuit, filed in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in Washington, D.C., seeks damages on behalf of all students who were allegedly abused in the past century at the schools, most of which were run by churches or other religious groups.
The federal government failed in its duty to protect the students sent to the boarding schools, the lawsuit says. In treaties with many tribes, the government promised to reimburse Indians for any wrongs done by non-Indians, it says.
Other lawsuits will be filed against the churches or religious organizations that ran the boarding schools, lawyers said. The lawsuit was started on the basis of allegations by former students from South Dakota. But it also will involve accusations at boarding schools in Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Minnesota and California, said Jeffrey Herman of Hollywood, Fla., the lead lawyer in the case.

Three of our program schools have licensed adolesent and/or family therapists on staff, classifying them as residential treatment facilities when serious individual therapy is desired. These are Cross Creek, Spring Creek Lodge and Tranquility Bay where individual therapy is included in the tuition. They are still a good option for any troubled teen and offer all of the benefits of the other schools. All of our other schools offer individual therapy from non-staff consulting therapists as an extra cost option when necessary. Please take confidence in the fact that if the school you select doesn't best fit the actual needs of your son or daughter, the staff there will ultimately let you know and recommend transfer to the most appropriate school in the program to help your teen. This is a results based program and although all of our schools are successful with many different types of cases, sometimes a different environment works better for an individual student. This would only be suggested after a good trial and concerted effort has been implemented at the school of choice. WARRANTY: All students who meet the criteria for successful completion from any of these facilities may be re-admitted to the Program for up to 60 day with free tuition if he or she should slip into old attitude or behavior patterns prior to the age of 18.
